We all know that most of the game ports from current generation consoles ruin the gameplay, graphics etc. on PC. I think this is because of the aged hardware on those consoles compared to PC hardware.

What do you think the ports from the next generation consoles (assuming there will be some ports) will be like on PC. I believe the next generation consoles will be at least a year ahead of PC in terms of gaming. Feel free to discuss. Smile

I don't think we'll have crap ports untill the PC games graphics advances more than the next generation consoles.

Quite a lot of complaints (mine anyway) come from the way the buttons are used on console ports. A few good games are better with a joypad and they're made for a joypad of a certain type. examplke...... football games, its usually right stick to control skills etc. which add to the fun. It's really hard to find a universal controller that is easy to setup on console ports. 1 year ahead? no, the technology might be there but it wont be ahead.

They will be ok for that year of console superiority after that they will suck for the remaining 3 or 4 years consoles usually last

And why will they suck?
Oh right, graphics. Sorry I forgot, graphics makes the game.

Uh, what? Why would the next gen consoles be ahead of PCs? The majority of the work is done by the GPUs now and who makes the GPUs for the current consoles? Nvidia and ATI. Why would they make better GPUs for the next gen consoles that cost $200-$300 for the whole console than for their flagship video cards which cost $500-$600 for the card alone.

First of all most console games run at 480i, so their GPUs really won't have to be pushed as hard compared to their computer counterparts. If computer users ran their games at 480i they could max out graphics settings and still get crazy high frame rates, but who the hell would want to run at 480i with their $500 video card?

Another point to make is that with new consoles comes new architecture and instruction sets that developers will have to get familiar with before they can push the limits of the console. PC developers have the advantage of architectures remaining basically the same for years. The instruction set has very few changes or additions.

The newest consoles might be better than a 3 year old PC, but they will never compare with a current top-of-the-line PC.

You're missing one point Summonerx. The consoles are subsidised by the parent companies so they can make more cash by selling licenses to the games makers. Check the licence agreement on a Xbox and you'll see that you don't own it but merely licence it from MS.

Yeah right, I bet all of us will have 3 3GHz PowerPC cores in our systems at the time of the xbox2 launch. Laughing

Console ports will be great for the first or second year of the console's life cycle. However, PC hardware will eventually catch up and multiplatform games will again be restricted (AI, graphics, level size, etc...) by the console hardware's limitations. And so on and so forth...

Exactly, thats why I said next generation consoles will be at least a year ahead, actually it could be more than that. I don't think anyone will be able to buy a cpu that is equivalent to a 4 Ghz Cell cpu with eight cores anytime soon.
