And here I am, happy with the 1 GHz single core I got in my Desire at the moment. The development on mobile platforms is crazy, these CPUs are faster than the P3 I used to have, despite the fact that it's just ARM :/

Wow, in 2010, they're making mobile CPU's faster than a CPU released in 1999? So mobile computing is just 11 years behind desktop computing? Cool Face

The absurd is, if a proper CPU platform is developed for mobile devices, a lot more performance can be achieved on these mobile devices. That 1GHz Snapdragon you have will sweat at 720p H264 with bitrates higher than 4000kbits or such "advanced" features as CABAC and/or in-loop deblocking enabled, while a much simpler devices with appropriate media instructions can even play 1080p content.
BTW, a single core ARM CPU is nowhere near as fast as P3 (even with the P3 having lower clock speed). P3 is a very old design, but it is still more advanced than RISC-based ARM. This dual core will see some performance improvements in multithreaded applications, but it's still based on the awful architecture.

@Frant
Also six times smaller with a tenth of the heat, if that even.

@iNatan
Yeah, but the apps developed for Android are quite impressive. I haven't actually tried any really high-rate 720p files, I'll see how it does with that. Thing is, apps developed for a platform like this do ridiculously well.

11 years on desktop:
Pentium 3: 9.5 million transistors, 128 square mm
Core i5: 774 million transistors, 296 square mm (4 cores) = 74 square mm/core (incl. 1/4 cache) + enormous performance increases per clock

Since they're desktop they do require more power and generate more heat, but a 1Ghz snapdragon isn't comparable to modern desktop CPU's in regards of performance. Wink

Nor is it comparable to 10 year old CPUs either. Take a linux benchmark utility which has an ARM compiled version and compare results between a P3 and Snapdragon. I don't even think you need to have the P3 run at 1GHz clock to beat it, a 600Mhz will probably be enough. Taking into consideration the Pentium lines are very inefficient compared to current day CPUs, that says a lot. Wink

Can you give some examples? Smile If you are impressed by OpenGL accelerated applications, that has very little to do with the CPU. Wink

Never said it is.

@ Leo: can't really name anything right now, but I'll have a look to find something interesting. It's just how it handles everything; my old Coppermine @ 866 is still in use by my grandfather, and I can boot browser + load webpage quicker over HSDPA on my phone than he can with his WinXP+Chrome on that PC. Got a gig of RAM in it as well, and I've removed all the bloatware XP comes with, plus he's not running the teletubby theme but good old classic Razz

(my HSDPA connection is around 3 to 3.5 mbit btw, his internet connection is 4 so that's more or less equal)

Surely there's some benchmark available that'll run on both, bootable USB stick should do the trick!

Edit: pretty sure the Snapdragon does better on the MFLOP front, and is only slightly behind on the MIPS front btw. Not that that's any indication but it's always fun to throw these terms around ^^
