Get Battlefield 1942 and the realism mod Forgotten Hope:

www.fhmod.org

This fucker is big (something like 1.4gb + 500mb patch), but its worth the download! The mod is awsome

[edit]
typo, its 1.4gb, not 14gb

To me Brothers in Arms is the BEST one if you're into WWII. People who liked Band of Brothers will also like.

If you want multiplayer, I'd say CoD: United Offensive.

Call of Duty is better than Brothers in Arms. It does the whole Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates plotlines much better and the atmosphere is more absorbing. It also has a better sound effects, sound-engine, music and graphics. What it lacks in comparison to BIA is squad control and the ability to flank your opponent.

These are moot points I feel when taking in the rest of the game, as both are linear straight shooters with moderately realistic aiming and damage models - the difference with BIA is that it sets itself up as 'different' when in fact the flanking manouveres are nothing more than a mere gimmick.

Medal of Honour is an even more linear varient of the two games, and it too boasts the same plus points as COD. It's not as realistic or as immersive however. More 'gamey'.

Ghost Recon is a very good, enjoyable game but it's not historical and it's not World War II. I lost many hours just playing this over and over, the singleplayer campaign is just so satisfying to complete. It's not fancy, or special though.

Battlefield 1942 is purely for those who play online, the singleplayer mode is woeful. I never really liked it to be honest, especially the infantry combat - but perhaps the mod Forgotten Hope which I haven't played changes that?

I like Day of Defeat too, it's a nice game in spurts.

Yup, thats the one. On gamespot you'll only find a review for the xbox version, but IGN already has one up for the pc version:

Yes, most of us downloaded it that's why - it's released March 18th officially.

Do you just want FPS games? Because there is another historical war game in Silent Hunter III coming out on the same day. I already have that pre-ordered. Check out the website here and download a few of the videos - it might get you interested: Website - and here is a very glowing review

Another possiblity is Hearts of Iron II, it's a kind of complex Civilization hybrid. link to review & info

You could also consider others such as Blitzkrieg a kind of friendly WWII RTS, Combat Mission varients which are more abstract ultra-realistic command game with 3D graphics. Then there is the daddy of WWII aircraft gaming, Il2Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head in the middle of the night Smile

I don't know any third person shooters for historical war games. Only Operation Flashpoint and Battlefield 1942/Vietcong (?) spring to mind in that they have the option to view your character in a third person viewpoint - but in both cases it's not the best view.

COD, MOH and BIA are all first person shooters.

Well you can play Hidden & Dangerous 2 in third person view (although aiming suck then).
The graphics may not be the best, but it still is my favorite WW2-game.
On the RTS-side, Soldiers is a superb game.
