And he has already said that..
..No new IP for '10 years'
Quote: | Doom house, id Software is unlikely to create another new game IP in "the next decade", legendary programmer John Carmack has said.
Speaking in the latest Official PlayStation Magazine, Carmack said the studio instead wants to concentrate on supporting its current shooter series, Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake - and hopefully Rage.
"We do already have more IPs than we can exploit," he told OPM. "I doubt we're going to do another IP. It's scary to say it, but maybe not in the next decade even, because we want to support Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake - and hopefully we can add Rage onto that - and I don't want five teams here. Three is scary enough.
"Obviously if Rage is a success then we'll want to do a Rage 2," he added. "If people love it, you want to give them more of it."
The id mastermind is due to speak at the annual QuakeCon event tonight, where he's promised to reveal "something neat and unannounced".
We'll of course be ready at our keyboards this evening to let you know what it is. |

Indeed, Carmack is a pathetic pussy sellout. And he ain't much of a innovator anymore.

I wouldn't call Doom 3 and id Tech 4 "jackshit", especially when it was originally demonstrated and supposed to come out (ca. 2001-2002), but since then... Indeed. But I've been saying this for years, not "just".

Yeah exactly. After Q3 they started on Tech 4, which took longer than expected because they ended up rewriting more of it than they originally planned (was supposed to be a Tech 3 enhancement IIRC), but they have developed just 1 game using it, and that's Doom 3. Not to mention the fact that it took several patches to make the engine run smooth, or that Doom 3 itself was a pretty big disappointment (for me anyway) :E

I'll be fair: the Epic guys are sellouts too, even worse than Carmack, but since UT2003, their engines were bigger than anything ID has done since Quake 3.

Like anyone wanted to license it in the first place. It looks so dated, almost as much as Tech 4, and we all know how many licenses that one sold.

Tech 4 looked great. Rage looks amazing. But it wasn't the looks that made it fail. It remained simple as Carmack pursued his rocketry stuff.
In UE you have anything but the kitchen sink, tech 4 still relied on manual script writing, old entity system and not very flexible age old BSP. I'm wondering how this new tech looks from inside.

It looks amazing for iPhone graphics, hate as much as you want but that guy knows how to get EVERYTHING out of a system. Doom3 run jerky because we all had shitty computers at that time. Now it runs on almost ALL onboard gfx chips at 60fps and it still looks pretty great! (except the low polygon models)

Well, at least seems that a hypotetical Fallout 4 will have proper animations this time

When you look at the iPhone 4 specs, it really isn't as impressive as one might assume at first glance. The PowerVR GPU found in the iPhones 3GS and later is quite amazing indeed.
I think the "hate" is coming from him focusing on this insignificant limited crap instead of pushing technology forward.

IMHO when Doom 3 came out, i've already seen the jaw-dropping gfx of Far Cry, seen the screenshots of HL2 (sorry, don't know who came out first, so i'll just talk about the screenshots), so when it came out i found it pretty lame compared to the competition.

Technically speaking, the Source engine at the time of release was a lot less impressive than Tech 4 (and still is in some regards). You can say you liked the art style better, and that's not something that can be argued about (taste - to each his own), but the technical side of Tech 4 was amazing for its time. It's like saying Mass Effect 2 looks "better" than Crysis, better, but in what way? Also, as said above, the engine and Doom 3 were supposed to come out in 2002 and supposedly run smooth on GeForce 3. (It was originally demonstrated on some Mac expo.)

Well, i can't argue that it's prolly a matter of taste, but even if the Tech 4 engine is awesome, i've only seen it in ONE game, and that one is a fucking dark game, in crampped rooms and corridors, that you can't see jackshit
Oops, we forgot, im pretty sure Id tech 4 was used in Quake 4. Again, another game in tight scenarios where you can't see shit. Except for the scenario where you ride the car outside, in a bland desert. And Prey, a game about tight corridors... Nvm, i think you saw my point already

Yes, while technically impressive, Tech 4 was indeed a complete fail, especially when you consider how widespread both the Q2 and Q3 engines were.
Now they spin this as a feature of pride, "only we will use it because it's so awesome!"

Quote: | 3:18PM CST: Carmack claims that id Software is still a PC studio. Immediately goes back to iPhone.
3:16PM CST: Larger system memory sizes, multi-cores, and 64-bit space allows for a lot of performance enhancements. id Software needs to start to play to the strengths of PCs which should not be programmed like a 360 or PS3, especially now with up to 24 thread multicore, 64bit, more memory. |
It's clear his interest in development isn't burning like it did 10-20 years ago. Now he seems to spend most time with rockets, mobile development and other casual interests.

This guy contributed a huge part to games as a medium, created titles that created cultures and kept the company private for 19 years.
Dissing him just seems bizarre.
