Just had another "holy shit that's awesome" moment.
Knocked off the clothing store cleanly, drove away, no wanted level.
About 5 minutes later I had looped around the block and ended up at the same place. I walk in, and the clerk is talking with the cops.
"Can you describe what the perp looked liked ma'am?"
"I don't know, he had a gun."
short pause
"Actually, it looked a lot like that guy over there! It's him officer, right there!"
Cops drew their guns and arrested me right on the spot. If that ain't epic, I don't know what is.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

I have found that for YouTube, 100mb/minute @ x264 for 720p is quite good. For 1080p you need at least double.

I read something a while back, when people were whining about PhysX being locked out (and then fixed again ) on ATi cards, but someone put up a really nice article about Havok and HW-acceleration. The gist of it was that Havok charges a license to run their physics engine on GPU rather than CPU, and AMD weren't willing to buy.
... though it could well have been Havok FX they were talking about, or just BSing |
That must've been bullshit, because both NVIDIA and ATI had demos of it running on the GPU, going as far back as 2006. Then in 2007 Intel buys Havok and Havok FX is never heard of again. Pricks
Just for the record, Havok does have some their stuff working using OpenCL, like Havok Cloth and Destruction (which is one of the videos you linked). More importantly, AMD/ATI is involved with that as well. They're just not far along enough to really go big with it. Apparently though, they are able to switch between CPU and GPU on the fly, which is a good thing because the GPU isn't ideal for *everything*
I like how everyone points at NVIDIA for being "innovative" and shit, but it's ATI who are trying (and have been for years) to get shit like physics into an open standard for ages

Enough of that already, jeez. APEX = slow no matter what hardware you have.

The game runs very smoothly without PhysX. The fire fights are nice but the driving feels like crap. Overall it seems like a pretty cool game. Hopefully it gets released soon because I start classes on the 27th!!! And I wont have any time for play!

It still needs Steam to run so what's the point exactly trying to download it from somewhere else.

I've played for a bit now and I must say some of the features are great, while it might lack in other areas.
Especially the fact you cant wound people, like shooting them in the leg etc, is quite annoying to me. Shoot them in the leg and they die.
Yet some of the death animations are pretty neat - For example; I shot a guy in the chest, he fell to his knees with his hand over the wound and collapsed.
Another thing is the city, I find it to be pretty darn good. As mentioned before, rob a shop and you can get recognized. Also I saw the police chasing some guy for a while, he jumped over fences etc, Then the cops opened fire and it changed into a shootout. Was pretty awesome.

I thought I made it clear already that even the download from nzone needs Steam. Or why else would it come packed with Steam Setup.exe and SteamService.exe.

Yeah, the game has it's ups and downs. It will be a great game despite it's flaws (and there are a few noticeable), but probably not memorable like the 1st.

SOme guy with GTX 480 says:
"Figured out why I was having crappy physx performance. It's another game where you have to use the provided physx.
1) Uninstall your physx driver
2) Go into C:\Steam\steamapps\common\mafia ii - public demo\3rd
3) Install the physx driver that is in that folder
I ran the benchmark again and where I was getting low teen fps and twenties i'm now in high 30s and 40s.

Steam shows I've spent over 5 hours in the demo already. Have to force myself to uninstall it and just wait for the full thing.

and next person:
"I just tried the "uninstall PhysX/reinstall from Mafia 2 PhysX driver" and got a pretty significant improvement. With PhysX on High before (1920x1200, no AA, all else maxed) I was getting 20-23 FPS average in the benchmark. After installing the Mafia 2 PhysX driver I'm getting 35-40 FPS average with PhysX on High.""
