So I'm gaining the quick reputation at my newish job (only been there for 2 months) and already fixed 2 computers and was going to fix one for the company as well.
My boss asks me if I could look at a laptop for him and I'm like sure and he already made the offer to pay. Story was, his mom brought her laptop into geeksquad cause it was acting funny and they straight up told her the hard drive was fried and it wouldn't even be worth fixing the laptop after putting in the HD and all that so they had her buy a new one from them.
So he got the laptop for free from her and brought it to me. There was absolutely fucking NOTHING wrong with the laptop. It had bone stock vista on it and it's been going for 2 years so obviously windows was getting a little sluggish. That was it, I reinstalled windows, drivers and everything, the fucking laptop works perfectly.
Oh and not worth fixing? You know how much this laptop costs? It's a 1,500 dollar laptop with a 2ghz core 2 duo, 9700GTS, 3gb of memory, 320gb hard drive and the speaker system on this thing is actually really nice. IT's a Toshiba Qosmio, which are very pricey laptops! So, boss just gotta a free one from mom and is only out 60 bucks for me working on it.
*applase* Way to go geek squad you fucking assholes.

I won 200 euros in a bet like that
My uncle always had his neighbour 'fixing' his PC because he was so 'good' at it. Then at some point he was reinstalling until the optical drive gave up and popped an error during setup - he told my uncle his motherboard, cpu, ram and hard drive all needed to be replaced. Luckily my uncle rang me first, so I drove over, had a look and said "it's the dvd drive". The neighbour said it wasn't, and he'd bet 200 euros that at least the HDD needed replacing.
Needless to say, that PC is still running now, 18 months later, with just a new DVD drive
