Well, perhaps not exactly at the first try, but I didn't find it insanely difficult either
Though it has to be said that I was a lot into driving simulations at that time ^^
at the time i had to give it more tries to finish the race too , but it was possible to pass the mission
played it again unpatched a couple of years ago or so , finished it from my first try
The first game was very linear too though but it doesnt mean they HAVE to make the second one like that too
yes, they do. otherwise it would be just another GTA-clone
So instead it's just a linear shooter clone with a mafia theme and, if we're lucky above average story and graphics. I still don't get why people play games for a "good" story (i do agree that linearity is better than sandbox when i comes to story). Most games with a "good" story is on pair with a bad b-movie. It's not like the script for first Mafia game would recieve an oscar if it was converted to a movie. It was decent for a game, but that doesnt say much. I rather have awesome gameplay, exploring and freedom over a half decent story.
I'm sure most fans of the first game want the 2nd be similar, not more like GTA. Sure it wouldn't be a bad thing if there was more stuff to explore, but if it takes away from the story mode, then I'd rather not. There are plenty of other freeroaming games out there...

I remember my friends having huge problems with the racing part in Mafia too but I never had a problem with it, I thought the racing was very easy, all four times I finished the game throughout the years. Not trying to brag or anything, I just don't think it was hard at all, I won them all on the first try. o.O
Why ? Honestly, it wasn't that fucking hard. o.O
Indeed.
I also never had a problem with the racing mission.

Free roaming games are still extremely rare compared to linear shooters, i can probably count the few worth playing one one hand.. I wouldn't mind if a good developer (i do think the mafia devs are good) tried to compete with Rockstar, because if we're honest most other free roaming games doesn't come close.
I'm glad it's more linear. Having a free roam game in this setting and presentation would just seem wrong. I don't want to see Vito running around gunning down random people or doing some shitty minigames. It would be extremely out of place. I'm interested in what looks like a great storytelling experience with hopefully well crafted missions.
I'm a huge fan of freeroam games, but I also like it when they actually have structure and a constant goal. If Mafia II can bring a great SP experience, but at the cost of some non-linearity, then that's fine by me =)

True, some don't know how to give freeroam but keep a tight story, and end up fucking both up, like gta4 did (they fixed it in liberty stories).
2K have spent years developing Mafia 2, and in that time some absolutely massive games have come out, hate to bring it up but GTA4 etc etc.
2K keeps pressing and pressing the fact that the world is highly detailed.
Therein lies the problem, what's the point in it being highly detailed if there f-all to do in the city apart from the main storyline. They missed a trick not including REAL random events, maybe hitman missions (its a god damn mafia game, come on!!), some drag races (50's era, seems obvious to put this in, are they mad)
So they have this highly detailed city, even described as "totally immersive, living and breathing world" and there's nothing to do, that's the point about the linearity, and if your not hearing the faint tingle of alarm bells then I cant help ya.
I LOVE it when the devs keep saying "man, my favourite thing to do is get a neat car and just drive around"
excuse me if that doesn't sound really....exiting...... Driving around . Or is it because there's really nothing to do.
Its like giving someone the latest iPhone with no insides, sure it looks great and highly cool, buts the nothing you can do with it apart from look at it, thats Empire City in a nutshell, pretty and highly detailed, with nothing to do apart from look at it/drive around.
(yes I fully understand you can shoot cops and drive around while not playing the storyline, but that gets old real fast, When I say nothing to do I mean side missions, stranger missions, hitman missions, drag races etc etc)
So I guess we will all enjoy.....driving around..... listening to music, or I can just pop outside and do that for real.

They'll milk those things trough dlc's, mark my words.
Unless the story turns out to be crap or something equally catastrophic is wrong with it, this'll easily top GTA IV for me. I couldn't care less about the stupid racing missions and what not (the only ones I did in GTA were the assassination ones), and the main plot in GTA IV wasn't anything special.
Polish commentary, but he doesn't say anything new really.
He's playing the PC version with maximum details (including PhysX APEX on maximum) in full HD resolution (he's playing with x360 pad). He's playing the 60% build of Mafia 2.
Beware that anything beyond 5:45 is a pretty big spoiler.
Excellent moment when he picks up a fight with the guy- the police arrives but he doesn't receive a fine, the police just says they should resolve their matters elsewhere. The pedestrian he was fighting with also receives a rebuke.
GameReactor said the following in their full game review:
Quote:
* The game took them 13 hours and 21 minutes to finish on normal difficulty.
* There is a lot of driving and walking in the game
* There is quite a big amount of side missions, but the developers made sure that the main story is one of the best you've ever played, the voice overs are excellent.
* Cars and their driving physics are amazing.
*The game offers 15 chapters, which amaze because of their length. The balance between the story and gameplay worked great.
* Mafia 2 may not be flawless, but it's definitely one of the best action games that Gamereactor ever played.
Thanks for the info. I'm fine with the 13 hours, because I'm confident that the story and the setting will provide an amazing experience, just like the original did. Buying this for sure. Just hope I'm able to afford a new CPU by the time the game comes out, my old overclocked E4300 is ready to be put down.
Who knows, maybe they'll have a racing mission that most people get stuck on and so that 13 hours turns into 25.
By the way, I've read your previous comment about GTA IV, and my advice is: if you haven't already played The Episodes from Liberty City, do it now!
TLaD is characterized by a grittier and darker story, and the LCHC radio has some very welcomed additions that you might enyoy =)
And then there's TBoGT, which is an insane cocktail of awesomeness and borderline unforgettable characters .
