No, you can disable that. Updates are manual - and necessary for certain features like the Shop Channel, but luckily people always upload the latest IOS/Shop so that you can use it without updating system firmware.

To date there is no forced "auto update" - so it's safe to leave Connect24 enabled, but since Nintendo added a clause in the EULA (Sys FW 4.2) that they *can* auto update if they need to, you're probably better off disabling Connect24 just to be on the safe side.

might as well hijack your topic and ask:
i just bought a new wii which i'm sure has a D3-2 drive.
my only options left are wode jukebox, wiikey fusion(like drivekey) or softmodding... anyone who can link to a full guide for soft mod?
also, are there any safety precaution steps you can take in case you screw up?
i read something about nand backup that would restore your wii... is that it?
the wii has firmware 4.2e btw.

As far as I know, the D3-2 simply *cannot* read backup DVDs, so your only gameplay option will be USBLoader -- which is always the better choice anyway since backup DVDs read at half-speed, impacting performance in a lot of games. As for a softmod guide;
/hack-my-wii-t99755.html?t=99755
^^ wiiso link (strongly doubt I can directly link to it to the slightly iffy nature of the site itself. Just add the line above to your Wiiso url)
And the complete softmod solution;

USB DVD or similar is also said to work but might need modding to function properly though.
(Firmware to read Wii discs and whatnot to block piracy and such in the original drive.)

i followed the wiiso guide and hopefully everything was installed correctly..
my problem now is that i can't get the usb loader(wiiflow that comes with the hackmywii package from wiiso) to work with my external HDD... i get a "exception(DSI), stack dump" error when i try to connect the HDD.
the steps i've done is format to NTFS, then WBFS via Wii backup manager(also from wiiso)... load wiiflow from SD card and when i plug in the HDD a black screen pops up with the error.
can anyone tell me what's wrong or is my HDD just incompatible with wii... it's a 500gb iomega select which should work at least according to this list:
http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Index.php/USB_Devices_Compatibility_List
is it because i load wiiflow from SD card instead of making 2 partitions for the HDD(fat for wiiflow, NTFS for games)?

had a long Q&A session on the wiiso forum and eventually found out it's because the damn external iomega HDD wasn't compatible.
i used a much older external i had and it worked flawlessly and i just came back from trying a game with it.
anyways since the HDD is old i don't expect it to last long... that USB dock does seem like a cheap solution since i have another internal WD drive i'm not using.
thx.
edit: quick question.
is it possible to load gamecube games from HDD the same way as wii games? the wiiso guide states it's possible with discs but since i have a D3-2 drive obviously backups won't work.
