oh PS, sorry but sc2 sure beats CoH by far.
I bought CoH and the expansions, it sure was fun to play against the HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS of people online....

I'm a huge fan of DoW 2 and SC2. With DoW 2, Relic really has had amazing support and offered a ton of value add services. Think about this. The game came with 7 MP maps and 1vs1 and 3vs3 modes when it was released. Since then, they have added 2vs2, FFA, Team FFA, and The Last Stand, all for FREE. They also have added over 20 additional maps and have gone to great lengths to improve the game. Personally, I like that there is no base management in DoW 2. It's more of a tactical RTS game, as opposed to a more traditional style of building bases and gathering resource. It's more about map control, unit composition and tactical battles, such as knowing when to send units, what units to send, using cover, flanking, etc. So for what it is, DoW 2 is an amazing game and I've seen it on steam, for both the original game and xpac for $15. You really can't beat that. Add in The Last Stand, which is just awesome IMHO and something I'd really like to see fleshed out more, DoW 2 stands on it's on compared to SC2. The beauty of it all to me though is that DoW 2 is not trying to be SC2. It's a different game that plays nothing like SC2. It's a fine game in its own right.
As for SC2, I personally love it. With their deep pockets, Blizzard has delivered a great game, with tons of features and a very high production value, right out of the box. Is the game worth $60? I think so. I bought the CE and don't regret it at all. The campaign is quite amazing with tons of cool things going on, has a great presentation, with a lot of cut scenes and cinematics. I really love how you have to buy upgrades and can learn Zerg and Protoss technologies and incorporate them in to the game. Unlike most games, I can see actually playing through the campaign more than once.
With SC2, you also know what you are getting with the multiplayer. It's standard base building game based on macro/mirco/harvesting and of course army composition, tactics and timing. I was especially happy to see so many maps. I think I counted 38 more maps in retail than beta. I mean, there are like 40-50 maps and that doesn't even include the built in editor, where we've seen everything from classics like DoTA style games and tower defense, to chess and even a metal slug side scroller... and that's just with beta! I'm sure as time goes on, the replay value of SC2 will be pretty much endless. This is the first game that's been $60 that I think is really worth $60. SC2 is just so polished and has so much production value and content that it will be something I play for a long time coming.
Now is SC2 better than DoW 2 or CoH? I think they are nothing alike really. CoH could well be considered by many to be the best RTS ever made. I love CoH, but I actually enjoyed DoW 2 even more, because it was easier to jump in to, is very fun, and I spent quite a bit of time on The Last Stand. SC2 on the other hand just came out, but so far, I think it's amazing and expect it to get a lot of GOTY awards and could possibly even break the metascore record of 96, held by a few games. No doubt in my mind, it is an instant classic. But to me, SC2 is just nothing like DoW 2 or CoH, so the only comparison I draw between them and SC2 is that they are RTS games. It's like comparing apples and oranges and, to be honest, I love both apples and oranges

Bought it, playing through the SP campaign right now. Damn good campaign, really. I agree that the game feels a bit old-school as far as gameplay goes; I really liked how the CoH and DoW did things. Still, fantastic amount of fun so far. I was surprised it ran so smooth on my older system (I'm rocking an 8800GT, haha), even at high settings. Smooth experience.
Haven't tried MP yet. I'm not very good at RTS games in MP, so I'll have to practice tons. My wife just bought the CE for herself (she wants the WoW pet, marketing win for Blizzard there). Once she gets it, I'll have my first practice victim.

Personally, CoH is the best RTS for me. Even better than DoW2 (which is pretty good too).
Finished SC2 campaign, was awesome, cool story and I'm excited to see more in the future.

I actually died in the CoH campaign a couple of times. On sc2 campaign on hard, I died only once, and that was on the tosh mission, because I didn't see a turret up ahead, and stormed some siege tanks. Also, no saving/loading for me.
CoH campaign was def. harder if you ask me.

Say it ain't so man. I really have my hopes up for an age game. Age was always about longer games, but deeper games. SC was always about build orders. Also, I think, since Age is more dynamic, people took a liking to SC more, as that's exact. In age, you had to be creative DURING the game, in SC I always felt like executing the plan I made in the first 3 minutes of the game.
Problem is, I'm really competitive, even though I don't have time, and thus don't have the higher level skills. And problem is, DoW 1 community is dead, and Age3 community likewise. So, do I derp it and play sc2? but then I just make more demand for this BS... I don't know.

Hah, I've been playing on normal and it's definitely on the easy side. Going to move to hard and try that out. Normal in SC2 is more like easy in most games it seems.

According to swedish e-sport site rakaka.se a bug in the menu system of SC2 is making the computer render an infinite amount of framerates which overheats the graphic card. A lot of people have already gotten their graphic cards wrecked because of this. A fix is out but you have to do it manually.
Go to "Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt" and change to the following values:
frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60
People that haven't had their Graphic cards ruined has measured upto 260 FPS in the menu.

I mentioned it here - http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1260595#1260595 although worded a bit different but it is extremely unlikely that the GPU card would actually fail unless GPU and general case cooling is really below par.
(ATI cards can handle and maintain functionality up to 110c and will GPU reset / WDDM crash to try to avoid damage at 115 or so although safe and normal would be 80 - 90 and that's under full load and with average cooling under a really demanding / graphically intense scene, NVIDIA is fairly similar.)
EDIT: Seems it did happen to some people anyhow after re-reading the article, it's not impossible but should be fairly rare.
(Then again the game has probably sold a million copies or more by now so I guess it's still fairly rare and infrequent taking that into consideration.)

Normal is pretty dang easy. Like, too easy. Oh well, I'll have to play the campaign on a harder setting later.
You guys need to check out some of the interesting maps / mods already out for SC2, though. Wow. That's what makes this game sweet in the long term. Chess, Final Fantasy, 3rd person shooters, bumper cars ... heh, even a Might and Magic clone.
Cool shit in the works. Although you have to use something like sc2mapster.com since Battle.net has the worst search function ever designed. Find the maps on the web and just search for them EXACTLY as they're titled to find them, then DL and play them.
Most suck right now (bit early for good ones), but it's clear that some truly rocking stuff is coming out. Just got done playing a multiplayer 3rd person RPG, for instance.
So, basically, SC2 is more of a game creation toolset than a polished-but-meh RTS from where I sit.

Sure you can alter the variables.txt file Citrone, i've done it myself as I noticed the temp increased (Fan speed kept increasing making it rather easy to notice while I was checking stuff in the game menus.)
What it does is limit menu framerate to 30 effectively throttling the card from over-working and thus hinders this issue and game framerate is about 60 - 62.
(Not really a demanding game so you'll see 62 all the time aside from the larger missions on a above mid-range machine, well optimized as such but very reliant on CPU which is easy to check with the task manager or similar.)

SC2 has zero innovation and is actually a pretty sizeable step backwards in relation to playability and feature set. |
i also thought the campaign is pretty shallow and short, pretty weak for 7+ years, i think they're just trying to tease the people for the next parts

Agreed! The SDK certainly seems like it can pump out some great custom content... and since SC is so popular, I reckon half the mods might actually end up being finished too
