I have been looking at a few cars and have pretty much come to the conclusion I want a Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTI SRi. I'm spending about £10000

Max power (bhp/rpm) 148/4000
Pulling power (lb/ft) 235
0-60 mph (secs) 8.3
Max speed (mph) 130
Town mpg 39.2
Out of town mpg 60.1
Average mpg 50.4
 Spoiler:

I had looked at the Civic Type S and a BMW 3 series. The Civic has rear torsion bar suspension ( Mad ) and the BMW would have to be about 5 years old with 50000 miles already on the clock.

I can get the Astra above easily with a 58 plate and less than 20000 miles.

Any thoughts anyone?

My sister has one from 2006 (Opel Astra, should be the same), very good car I must say. I'm more a man of Mercedes and BMW, but this Opel amazed me. Drives perfect and is a good family car (if you have one of course). It also has a big interior which is a must for me. You won't be outracing a fast car, but it can compete with a mercedes in teh comfort department.

@FriendlyBus
Maybe I should have added that I'm not looking for a car that is group 50 insurance, tax band Z and gets less miles per gallon than a commercial airliner. Laughing I need something that is kinda economical and cheap to run but stills looks good.

@Mister_s
Sweet. I'm just waiting for my house sale to go through and then I'm buying, I think. The purpose of this post is in case I have missed some flaw about the car. I know about the 'one touch indicators' and the dual mass flywheel having to be replaced along with the clutch... They aren't too bad though. How did you find using the indicators? Don't have a family btw, that's why I want the three door.

The civic probably has more stability, despite its technically inferior rear suspension. But in the end I'd say drive them both (in the same day would be better) and see what you like.

Quality mechanically-wise, the Honda is the better choice, but I have no idea what the cost to own-difference is for you Smile

Opel is a very sturdy car and if it gets broken parts are easy to find and cheap. This is in the Netherlands and with slightly old models though. I don't know much about the 2005+ models.

I'd skip the BMW, think HARD about the Vauxhall Astra (same as Opel Astra) (they have a tendency to rust) and look at the Civic, Corolla etc. for cars that are fairly cheap to maintain. Or a Peugeot 206/207.

Go with the bmw 3 series.
I always said that i would never buy a bmw, but i came upon a great deal(6000$cad).
And i have to say i love bmw now. i bought a 2000 323i a year ago, and i have had zero problems. Only regular maintenance. These cars are built to last man, my car is 10 years old got 185k and its in perfect shape. Its got all the luxury you need and its really fun to drive, thanks to the RW drive.

Edit: Oh and chicks love beamers Very Happy .

Thats true, luckily for me i know a few mechanics that do cheap labour, and parts arent that expensive off the internet. He could buy this for 9000pounds

Or an older one, with v6 and fully loaded.

Getting a V6 requires an extra thought to economy. I had a 3.0L V6 Citroen XM (super comfy and nice power) which I loved. Problem with that car was the gas economy. 1.3-1.5L/10km in city and 0.8-1.0L/10km outside town. A V6 is simply guzzling gas, especially older ones (early 2000's, late 90'ies).

I wouldn't actually mind a fresh 3-series, but it doesn't fit my current economical situation.

You could probaby get a decent Forester/Impreza for that much. Subaru's are pretty reliable. A Golf could be a decent choice if you want a small car. Some particular golf models were useless though, so I dunno.

OR you could totally get an Evo 10. Or the new GTR. Or a Pagani Zonda. You know, give or take a million quid. Oh I wish I could do that...

Think I am going to have to test drive a BMW 3 series before I make my mind up. Thing is though, like I have said before, there is an Astra identical to the one above on Autotrader except it's a 2009 with 8000 miles on the clock, only 10 grand. That's nearly new and about 12 grand off the RRP, excluding deals.

Going to have to test drive the Civic, Astra and BMW.

I like some Peugeots. The 207 GTI is nice. Not bad on fuel either.

The Astra H is a good option man , that or a Focus would be one of the best cheapest options for you. And from what i've heard and read Ford's diesel's tend to have alot of issues.
A couple of friends have had an Astra H and it's not a bad car at all , fuel efficency is good and it drives well.Civic is a great looking car too , but there arent as many engine options , i think there is 1 2.2l diesel engine and i don't really think it's worth it since the power output is close to that of Astra SRI.
But alot of reviewers pointed out that the last Typer R isnt as good as the last one , so if you want better handling , you can pretty much forget that.
You could try for Mk5 Golf , or even a Jetta if you don't want a hatchback.

Don't be an idiot and and buy a BMW cause ' hurr durr itz a beemer and its awesome' , especially a 1series , you'd get ripped of with parts and interior space isnt too big.And i'm guessing the 3 series is and e46 , the design it 12 years old man , 12 , whilist the Astra is 6 and parts still exceed that of an Vaxhaull.

Personally , if you aint gonna floor it most of the time , there's no point in getting a 1.9 , a 1.7 101 (or was it 105?) HP would do the job nicely and consume less fuel.
Peugeot 206 ?? or 207 ? god damn , i haven't driven a 207 , but the 206 is pretty fucking shitty man , be it diesel or regular and i can't imagine a 207 being alot better.
PS
don't be a pussy , get one without parking sensors

Did you read my first post Rolling Eyes BMW would mean slightly higher insurance but fuel and tax would be about the same. And I said the car would be older and with higher mileage.

@Hierofan
Thanks for the advice man. I'm not too sure about the 1.7 Astra, I'm thinking it might be just a bit too slow. Good points would be the lower insurance and slightly better MPG.

And no, I would never opt for a car with parking sensors, they look crap and are not needed. Smile

@newty
don't mention it , the 1.7 is pretty good , i too was surprised on how well it went.
on the flip side every car has its faults , on earlier Astra H models , at least the ones sold here,cars had some issues like : fog lights not being properly fitted or built wrong , water had contact with the light bulb and it blew it. Other stuff i know is that they overfilled the doors with sealent or whatever the fuck and if the car was exposed to excessive heat it would melt and flow under the door.

car forums are an excellent source of information , so look them up ASAP when your options are down.

don't worry tho , each car has its faults , especially newer models , read that Passat CC had some sort of self breaking sensor (in case you get to close to something) and if there was ice or snow covering the front grille it would still be in effect, breaking the car.Or on the same car fuel pump wouldnt register correctly if you had under half of tank .

The Astra, is ok, but a little uninspired.

You could look at the Focus ST220, pretty sweet on the BHP, Seat Leon Cupra R, Honda Ciivic S Type, this has high customer satisfaction. How about a VW Golf 2.0 TDI. That is a sweet motor and fast!

I'd choose any of those over the Astra.

Make sure to test drive all those cars before buying one. 10 grand is a big purchase.
The E46 is an old model but it still looks awesome, has a better line than most new cars.
IMO a e46 still looks better than a new civic or astra.

anyway getting a car based solely on brand and/or looks is fucking stupid

why ? are you so concerned about the brand that Vauxhaull isnt good enough ? i mean fuck the brand as long as the car is good as parts are available at good prices.
i mean fuck it , if i had a billion euros i still wouldnt buy an impractical car like a lambo , ferrari or merc , no point of having something that isnt usefull.i'd probably have a Range Rover Sport (the only SUV i like) and some Astra Caravan with a 1.7 diesel that gets shit done , heck , i wouldnt even like alloys since they'd crack if i'd hit a pothole at high speed.
