It takes ages...

Got a new 1TB drive (WD 1TB Black, 64mb) yesterday, throwing out my last IDE drive (yay, last IDE-unit to go, no more IDE here) and removing the near-dead-160gb-SATA. Copying 500GB from an IDE drive and a crappy SATA drive takes TIIIIIIIIIIME....

I belief you, still using a 80GB IDE HDD here though.
I hate discarding stuff that served me well.

Bloody hell, now I've got the system ready, only SATA units going, fresh install of Win7.. Now I'm doing the tedious task of moving all the crap to the right places.. 1TB to move between different partitions etc... Gaah!

How do you know that hell not only exists but it's also covered by blood cells suspended in a liquid plasma?

It exists out of desperation created by people cursing about it. Ie. a self-perpetuating universe created by our fears and nightmares.

Bloody because it's one of the archetypes of worst-case-scenario of doing cunnilingus when suddenly a rotten red discharge hits your mouth.

Oh, that makes perfect sense. Good luck with your tedious displacement of files then, I've already done it some months ago and it was absolutely enervating Crying or Very sad Smile

FFS, bloody pissing hellish destiny of crap fests in all the anal holes of satan..

My new 1TB WD Black (64mb cache) died on me yesterday. 700GB of data lost, I spent 1.5 days reorganizing everything and finally got it all worked out with a smooth partition layout and everything... And the fucking shitty little arsehole of a brand new HD decided to die on me, days after I installed it.. WTF!?!!

During the years that has never happened to me before. I've had other stuff break after a week or so but this one really took the titty twisters to the chinese chem cleaner outfit in the alley.

It was stuck in a track (could hear.. "ditt..... dittdiditt... ditt.. dittdiditt.. " over and over and over again... I actually managed to get the last partition online after deleting the first partition where the major error is, but I got ~1.5MB/s in speed. And I had 350GB to rescue from that partition. I put the most important stuff in a queue to be copied and went to bed. Thankfully it had finished today. Bloody hell and shit in satans armpits...

I'm thinking of saving up cash to get a proper RAID-5 (or similar variant) setup. RAID 1 (mirroring) is the safest but you only get 50% of the combined size (ie. two 1TB disks only give you 1TB, the other is purely for redundancy).

yeah, thought about that as well. I have enough drives, but not enough to shuffle the data around and pack it back on. Which is why i currently have three raid1s. Will exchange drives when some more money is teh piggy bank! Very Happy

Yes, I managed to copy some stuff @ 1.5mb/s. I chose the most important stuff (skipped all the stuff that I could redownload, just made a "dir > list.txt" of the folders with that stuff).

It was like being back in 1997 copying stuff off a zip-drive @ 1.5mb/s.. But at least I saved some stuff.. Wink

It must have been pr0n so obscene, so horrifying, so mentally and physically damaging that the HDD literally cooked itself alive rather than face the fear of storing it Very Happy

The first partition (the one that was actually physically damaged it seems) held some texts that I had written for possible novel writing. They're gone now. Good thing my imagination is alive... Wink
