all apple products suck donkey balls and are generally a ripoff. if you really have to buy one do it, but please upgrade the ram yourself and get some cheaper ram for pc, or get yourself a nice pc barebone.

I was thinking about buying one to change environment a while. But It's pretty hard to get software and I can get a similar experience with Linux so I would advice you to buy a barebone instead and install Gentoo linux on it. You won't get a better OS experience. You can also use it as a HTPC if you want. BTW, what's up with the options?

I mostly want the mac so I can use final cut at home to finish some/work on some work/projectst:) I don’t really care for the ‘environment change’ aspect of it I’ll only use it for one thing Very Happy

I might try doing the linux thing but I’ll have to research it Very Happy see what kind of development tools are out there… it’s 5 am and I woke up four times tonight Crying or Very sad I’ll google the thing after I get some decent sleep.

As for the options I don’t know. Was kind of bored methinks and in the hype of the review (if you’re talking about the poll options)

As for the options I don’t know. Apple has been known for being ‘money hungry’ (if you’re talking about the upgrade options on a mini-mac)

Ok, if you're using Final cut pro you could as well make a dual boot with Windows or just go Windows only and install Avid Xpress pro HD. Personally I don't think that Mac sucks because the user environment and the security is great. But you can get all that with linux + much more options and be able to compile everything to be optimised for just your comp. Then you can off course run Linux on whatever platform you can think of except some very few unusual ones.

If you build a barebone you will have more and cheapier options of upgrading and you will have some fun building it. I know some guys who have stucked water cooling in their barebones so the possibilities could continue like a list. Modding could also be a nice thing.

If you haven't tried Linux at all before download a LiveCD called Gentoo RR4 liveCD. It's a disc that loads a flavour of Gentoo into your ram and behaves nearly like if you should installed it. I've seen many livecd's like Ubuntu, Knoppix and Slax but this one simply rox. There are also some nice options to choose KDE and Gnome so you can try out the most popular user environments. I'm not sure but I think that they've included even more like XFCE (my favourite), Blackbox variants and so on. The difference is that it doesn't write anything on the disc without your knowledge like a standard install would have done (caching, logs and so on). And if you feel comfortable you can install the OS from the livecd. HERE you should find both the .iso and the .md5 (checksum) file. Even if you don't plan to install Linux you will have good use of this disk when for ex Windows dies etc. Remember that it is X86_32 and not X86_64. His X86_64 version is coming soon Smile.

I'll put up a livecd section later in the OS F.A.Q. because this is one of the best ways to convert people. So everyone who's reading this, try it. It's worth it! Cool

I have avid at home. It’s just my current pc can’t really handle it that well and rendering takes a lot longer than it should Crying or Very sad The place where I do my work stuff has imacs and emacs though I’m only exposed to emacs with final cut. I tried burning the clip on a dvd and editing it at home with avid but after I played around I got a raw file that couldn’t fit the normal dvd and I suck at compression (seriously Razz) so I had to buy those dual layer dvds. Crying or Very sad

Will try the Gentoo RR4 liveCD soon. In two hours when it finishes downloading Razz

can you dual layer on a mac?

I guess you haven't chosen the correct boot sequence in your mobo. You are probably having floppy - hd - cdrom or hd - floppy - cdrom as sequence. Try floppy - cdrom - hd instead. It should boot if you have the cd rom before the harddrive.
