I don't think the new slim model can be moded anytime soon. They revamped the hardware But i'll be getting one bundled with kinetic as soon as i have some flow.

Ha said flash, not mod. It's likely that MS has changed the DVD drive but it shouldn't pose a greater challenge then the previous drive revisions. They can't revamp the DVD-ROM standard.

We'll see once they open it up.

No, but like Nintendo did with the Wii; they can use a drive that can't read burned media. The latest Wii drives physically CANNOT read burned DVDs of any kind. Wii/GC disks only.

Bla bla bla, see you all console derps when they come out with some special "next-gen" anti-piracy scheme that is uncrackable, "so you are all fucking then", you'll be back to the PC in no time.

A few details about the console via a E3 conference and hands-on experience.
(A rather short article but might be of interest.)
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/64269
Some technical things.
Quote: |
Much of the noise from the old 360 actually came from the DVD drive spinning. I popped Alan Wake into the new machine and waited to hear what happened. Not much. The new optical drive makes very little noise beyond a few confident clicks as the tray locks into place and it goes about its business.
Likewise, the switch to a larger diameter, slower RPM fan eliminates almost all noise from that either. It also seems to have helped with circulation. Holding my hand above the vented top (with the console stood up) I could easily feel the air being drawn into the case. Internal updates also appear to help the new smaller 360 stay cool. The new model gets 45nm chips and the resulting reduction in power draw has let them drop the new power brick to 135 watts.

Well, for me it's not the DVD that makes the sound. It's the fans inside who make the 360 sound like a powerplant. If they fixed that I'm very happy with it. I just hope that making it smaller won't mean bigger chance of RROD....
I do think I'll stay off the first production of this version, see if people who buy it gets any problem with it. Besides, my "old" box is fixed so it might live a few more month...year..hopefully..

It was always the DVD drive making the loud noise, with the internal fan just adding to that. This new one not only has a fab shrink to 45nm, meaning less heat output and power requirement, but also has a LARGER - slower spinning - fan, which reduces noise. Even on my original 360 the noise is negligible at best when you run games from the HDD and not DVD. Barely a hum.

Well that's odd, because I've had two - a Falcon and a Jasper - and neither are loud in the slightest. CONSIDERABLY quieter than my PS3, for example. It's only when playing from the DVD that it sounds like a hair-drier.

Wouldn't this new DVD and motherboard (Part of the GPU/CPU fabrication shrink.) make it difficult to mod this thing though, of course a flash based (Softmod I think it's called here as well.) solution for the reader might be doable eventually unless other measures are taken.
(Removal of DVD-R readability as Sabin pointed out earlier I think though that's probably unlikely.)
EDIT: Then again MS probably sees the piracy as a rather minor concern and if the console sells better that only serves to benefit them.
(I guess that's one reason why bans are not IP specific but for the X360 "serial" and can also limit other functionality.)

here's my guess;
they've realised how ridiculously dumb it was to use a standard sata-connector and standard hardware for the drives
so they'll implement proprietary connectors and/or interface filmwares
when you're a company the size of microsoft, this is trivial to do and requires physical parts for any would-be pirate
currently simply reflashing the drive is ridiculously easy
all you need is basic knowhow and sightly balls
it blew my mind when i read about it

it has sata so
but as of now we don't know the drive and don't know if that fancy camera will need constant live signal to work or get separate updates

No? And I thought the main appeal of consoles was how easy it was to play games, burn and pop in.

Hey, you enjoy your console "quality" games like Alan Wake and Fable 3, for 60$ at least a pop, fine with me.

Aha! But I was speaking when there comes a time when you cannot do that. What then? Read my original comment, and then cobALT's response.
