Some details on this for you:

Actress Jeri Ryan, the actress portraying Sonya Blade in the video, has confirmed via Twitter that this is a short film created by a director to sell Warner Bros. on his Mortal Kombat pitch. "It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film," Ryan says on her Twitter page, adding " I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was." Thanks to Zimnick for pointing us towards Jeri's updates!

just started watching it. is that michael jai white as jax? if so, suddenly my giveafuckometer went up to a 9, that guy is awesome...

ok finished the trailer... well i guess what this is, is like a proof of concept teaser? to try and shop it around and see if they can get interest in getting the movie finally made?

either way, killing cage... especially baraka.. nah.. fuck them. cage is my fav, and i know he dies, but that was a punk-ass death from a shitty character so cage wont get to fight in the tournament? that shit fucking cuts me deep Sad

think its a bit annoying that theyre going the 'dark gritty route'. oooh batman did it, so lets do that for every film now. fuck em. its fucking mortal kombat. if i dont see fireballs and ice flying out of sub zeros hands and lightning strikes n all sorts of shit, its not fucking mortal kombat, so i hope they dont try and pull that 'realism' shit on a mythical/fantasy based story ffs.

looks classy though, just hope they fix that stupid fuck-up with cage dying, and add in more fantasy. they can still keep it 'dark' and 'gritty' and whatever the fuck they want, but i just hope they dont forget what it is that theyre making here:

magic and fight scenes, NOT a dramatic thriller.

also, sorry trek nerds, but jeri ryan is a huge fail as blade. wont accept her one bit. reptile was cool though. not keen on scorpion though... if hes not a flaming skull, hes not scorpion.... seriously, fuck this 'realism' shit right up its stupid ass, im utterly sick of it.

I doubt Jeri would be cast in a studio movie of Mortal Kombat chiv, no franchise potential with a 42 year old woman in the mix Cool Face

Besides Jai White is way too old also. If they ever reboot it expect them to start completely over. This is just a bite of how he would approach the IP, imo. In a real movie Cage wouldn't die either. But this is a short Very Happy

Well Cage was one of the original stars of the first, admittedly awesome, film. They killed him off in the opening scenes of the second ... so;

A. He's had his limelight.
B. He's been killed off in the past.

ok you can just pack that shit in about white being too old, he'd fit in perfectly, not only does he have the right look for jax (unlike that gangsta looking faggot they used for the second film), but you KNOW he would be awesome if he had any fight scenes. plus hes a good actor, so yeah he would be a great choice for the film, they would be wise to keep him i think.

but yeah, ryans just gotta go, she terrible. give mitra the blade role. yeah shes mid 30s now or some shit, but she looks right and would do a great job. id hate to see them give the role to some hair-flippy dopey ass young chick like fucking megan fox or something... hey look shes got tits SHES PERFECT FOR THE ROLE!!!!!111111111

and cage'd better not die. like i said, hes my fav, and i just couldnt get in to a mk film that punk-kills him off... Sad

yeah i know hes died before, and he got a main role in the first one, but hes too awesome to just kill off like that. hes one of the best things in the franchise... i want him to be a major, or atleast significant part in a new film if theyre going to reboot it Crying or Very sad

that formular isn't working, so i guess they just want to try new stuff w MK. They has nothing to lose anyway, since Mk is already dying.

dying? it had two movies, a good one and a shit one, and the tv series wasnt bad. the second film didnt fail because of the formula, it failed because it was shit.

all in all, i just cant wait till the realsm fad is finished, so i can have my fantastical fantasy-based films back.

i mean whats next... reboot superman and instead turn him into a robot, because all that 'flying nonsense' was just too unrealistic? reboot spiderman but this time without the wall crawling or spidey sense because thats a tad bit unbelievable? i like my realism when it was just ruining thrillers and dramas. it took away my action films from me, and now its taking away my fantasy films. im dreading the day it kills off futuristic sci-fi space action movies Sad

im sure this sounds petty to most as usual, and im sure many of you think 'realism' in all films is a great thing! but i dont, i hate it. as much as some of you hate reboots and remakes, i hate this 'realism' spin thats being put into EVERY fucking film, regardless of whether or not its suitable. realism can work, and indeed is a great tool in films.. within reason.. but shoving it into everything just pisses me off, it really does. i just wish theyd use some common sense instead of using it as a blanket to cover everything.

both films were shit. jesus christ. i can't believe people are defending the original mortal kombat. they were shit. both of them. stop making them sound like they were brilliant and amazing and fantastic. They were ok at best. It didn't have the mortal kombat feel aside from its characters and their powers. The second one was better because of the wave of characters they brought in.

MK works with a realistic take. They can still give people mystical and magical powers, but I'd prefer them adding some sort of a real element. Scorpion doesn't have to be a flaming skull. Liu Kang doesn't have to make that obnoxious cry when doing the bicycle kick. Sub Zero doesn't have to control the elements as in the game, but can still freeze things. There's so much they can do to make it great. Turning it into a real cheese fest with lights, fire, ice, rain, lightning and people in spandex is not really something that will work in 2010. in 94-97 yes.

If they can eliminate the amount of cheese and still make it a decent game-tie-in then i'll be satisfied.

Futuristic sci-fi space action movies were ruined with 2001. But the realistic formula didn't sell.
Superhero movies will always be on the fantastical side of things. Reason batman went the real way is because he's only human. Nothing less and nothing more. Iron man went the realistic way because yet again he's exactly like batman.

firefly/serenity took a realistic look at space combat. no lasers. no pew pew pew zooop zap zip brooowaaargh and fnnniuts to sell. And it worked. It also worked for star-trek. Mission Impossible 3. The host. There's a shit load of movies that did a real take on sci-fi without the eerie it came from ooze story.

There will be times when real will work and times when fantasy will sell.

cheese worked in 80s. Now it doesn't. If we had no idea what commando was then. And it came out now... it'll be treated as a troma film.

ahh another person lost to the 'realism' fad Sad

and i dont know how saying the first film was 'good' suddenly translates into 'brilliant'... did anyone here say it was brilliant?

i just think its sad that you no longer believe that fantasy and cheese are two seperate things.

cheese comes from shitty filmmaking, not level of realism. would lotr have been better suited if it had been about men with swords teaming up against a very safe and realistic warlord commanding another equally dull army of humans trying to kill them for their lands?

and i think its a bit silly to suggest that star-trek works for a pro realism argument... that was pretty fantastical... and didnt serenity kinda end up with a big pew pew laser space fight? actually that entire film turned out to be pretty crazy and fantastical... which was fine, it didnt take itself seriously, and it DIDNT try to be all dark and gritty and realistic. it knew when to add some realsm and when to let go and have some fun. THAT is called using realsm with respect to the material and with a bit of restraint....

i have nothing against using realism in places where it belongs, or to enhance and 'ground' the setting of the film. i think some degree of realism would serve mk well, but not as much as is being shown in the trailer is all im saying. i think 'realism' is being overused these days in films where it isnt needed. substituting GOOD filmmaking would be a much better solution.

No, but it works. Wink

LOTR doesn't work that well because of its fantasy elements, it works because it is a very well written story with very good characters. The fantasy only helps.

i wasnt implying that it works BECAUSE its fantasy, my point is that when the film is made well, fantasy is in no may detrimental to how well it works - thats all im trying to get across. fantasy does not automatically equal cheese.

and i wasnt asking if it would work - of course it would - im asking if lotr would be better without its fantasy setting... and as far as im concerned, and judging from your response, i think its fair to say that no, it wouldnt be better without it.

Well it's interesting even tho they got all the MK history wrong. I kinda don't like the fact that they 'humanized' the MK (like reptile, baraka, scorpion, etc.), but if they just 'remade' the old movies we would probably get another movie like DOA (and that was one of the worst fighting movies, if not the worst, I've ever seen).

And what's with sub zero:

Looks like they're tryin to go with the realistic approach Batman took, but its not really working for me. .How are they gonna make a huge giant with four arms? And I used to like Reptile in the game, but they made him some horror-film cannibalistic freak, for the sake of "realism." Just not feelin it...

Maybe next we'll see a Sonic the Hedgehog movie with live actors and a man who dresses up with blue spikes and runs 1.5mph.

i hear for toy story 4 disney is forcing pixar to have a 90 minute film where the dolls just lie there doing nothing, and occasionally someone walks in and plays with one. i hear it will also have shakey cam to make it more intense.
