I do have to relate this apple story even if it's a little off-topic (about ipods). I bought my wife an ipod video on ebay (used) over 4 years ago. She uses it in her car (i installed one of those pioneer touch-screen dvd players) so it never leaves her glovebox except when she wants to sync new music on it. Last week it suddenly stopped playing music (the screen still "showed" the songs playing, even on the pioneer headunit). So i took it out and found it wouldn't play any music from either the headphone jack or the docking connector. Looking online, i found that others had the same problem starting back in 2004. After scrolling through 20 pages of the apple help forums, I saw where apple was giving people new ipods. So i called up customer care, gave them the serial number and they said "It's 4 years out of warranty. what's going on with it?" I described them the problem, they handed me over to a supervisor who said that it was a manufacturing defect and would be replaced free of charge even though it's so old. They gave me a repair number and had me take it to the nearest UPS store. It was shipped overnight at THEIR expense across the country ( i live on the east coast) and the next day, they shipped a refurbished one back overnight again. I have to say, while i'm not a "fanboy" apple DOES know how to treat it's customers. I mean, I had 2 HP laptops go out with the nvidia graphics chip snafu 2 months out of warranty and hp basically said "fuck you" even after they received a settlement from nvidia to repair those chips. While i won't be buying a macbook anytime soon, they've gota lifetime customer for ipods when i need a new one.

They already have laptops sufficient for their work. Probably they needed to spend some money for gadgets and choose iPads.

Believe it or not, the iPad is expected to outsell the iMac in 2010: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-20006281-64.html
I'm not getting one until it's running Snow Leopard. The current version is using iPhone OS... FFS! At least the pad still looks cool.

You wait until Apple squeezes MacOS X into 256MB RAM? There is a reason why they decided to use iPhoneOS.

Well... I think it's very likely that the iPad's memory will be expanded in the near future. Especially since it's selling very well.

Most people can't afford a Mac... so I'm not very surprised most people would pass on a $1200 iMac and opt for a $250 Lenovo heap of junk
Not that there's anything wrong with that; the latter will get the job done as well. It probably just won't look as good in your living room. And more experienced users might agree that Mac OS does have its advantages over Windows. It's built specifically for the hardware, so no awkward driver shit etc.

That's a whopping 5 or 6 iPads less sold. I don't think that'll put Apple out of business Actually I don't really like the current iPad that much, it's mostly old functionality in a shiny new coat.
But I think it's safe to say I can look forward to plenty of funny anti Apple whining on the internet in the future... while the iStores will conquer the world

I'm just waiting for all the iPad-killers. In fact, it's impossible NOT to produce something more powerful, more useful and still cheaper in the pad department compared to the iPad which is an atrocity.

no but they could drop 1200 on a GOOD laptop/PC...so for the same price have something that blows the imac out of the water, looks good, plays games....etc etc.
your comparing 2 different things..your basically saying "a 250 dollar POS isnt as good as an apple" really? if thats the best comparison "a 250 one can do what an imac does..jsut doesnt looks as good"
then I could buy the ugly 250 buck one..and lay the extra 950 bucks on the table next to it..then it would look just as good
find me a $1200 PC/laptop that isn't as good as a $1200 Imac, and Ill see it as a valid argument.
and macs dont have driver problems? really? and its specific hardware made for it?
Intel chips, Nvidia or ATI graphic cards..30 different memory manufactures available..
yep, that apple specific only
every site I goto for work has at least 2 IT guys that area JUST for the Mac users in editorial to fix macs. fix driver issues, software problems..OS problems.
sticking your head in the sand going "my mac dosent crash"
doesnt null the fact that they do...just as often, as PCs. so its a null argument.
edit: and by that argument, of its "not as good looking".
your saying the 950 dollar premium to impress people when they come over seeing you own a mac is worth it?
isn't that the argument everyone else has been making to you? that macs are overpriced for the status of impressing other yuppies, with showing off you own a mac? you cant both defend and deny that topic at the same time. pick a side.

The alternative iPads we've seen so far have been rather clumsy and expensive fly swatters. Same thing with the iPhone really: one of a kind.

I wouldn't compare the iPad with the iPhone. Most phone manufacturers saw themselves as hardware companies. Old phones were not sold because of their software, but because of their hardware. The OS of a Nokia 3210 was primitive featuring an address book, text messaging and a clock, not much more. When the regular phones evolved into smartphones, the OS became more important because the phone now had hardware capabilities beyond a mobile phone but the big players like Nokia and SonyEricsson failed to create a consistent platform for software developers. I do give Apple credit that iPhoneOS did offer real compatibility for apps over three generations (while iPhoneOS4 will be the first to break compatibility with iPhones older then one year).
The iPad is different. It does not offer a more advanced OS then its competition (which use Windows or Linux) but a more primitive one. Tablets using Windows or Linux can be used as real computers while the iPad isn't suited for much more then simple multimedia and simple games. Wanna boot your new iPad? Connect it to your REAL COMPUTER first? Wanna rip/burn a CD? Do it on your REAL COMPUTER. Wanna encode a movie? No chance. Wanna print a document? Nope. Wanna connect to your external monitor to get some work done? Only in certain apps with 1024x576, so no gain in screen estate. Try running an IDE like Visual Studio/eclipse in 1024x576, assuming that there will ever be an IDE ported to iPad.
I see a lot of people thinking that the iPad is a REAL computer that hey can use to work with, but unless your work consists only of writing emails I can't see how it can be sufficient.
Bottom line: While the iPhone is a real phone (at least from what I can tell after using other peoples' iPhones for a bit) the iPad lacks key features when compared to other tablets. I don't see anything more then an iPod with bigger screen.
