Wow, you said it after 20 minutes of playing the game, probably even less.

and their 20 second attention span at it's finest.

It was enough to get an impression of it. The shooting gameplay I knew used the same horrible system from mass effect where your crosshair gets bigger as you fire then slowly very slowly retracts. However when up against the stationary training targets this wasn't so bad. Against real human opponents though it sucks. I made a stealth character and looked forward to sneaking through missions sneaking past guards if possible and taking them out with a simple headshot if not. This quickly proved to not be possible due to the firing system. The gun has a "critical hit" mode where the reticle shrinks to something resembling precise but it takes far too long to get to get there. The controls are bad, they may be better on a gamepad, I did not test it. The fact that if a guard sees even a toe of yours there is an instant alert throughout the base is shallow. The fact that it doesn't seem to matter how many alerts you get. The game perfectly rewards going with an assault rifle and killing everyone. Not very secret agent like. The cameras actually have a blue cone coming out of them to show you where they are pointing. It is a rip off of Mass Effect which wasn't a very good game to begin with. The story was keeping me interested and the dialogue system was pretty cool. The safehouse was a nice touch, but once that mission started the game just fell apart.

In short, you character is low level (it's rpg, not SHOOOTER), and thus sucks in combat, so game must be bad. Very Happy

I think the biggest mistake the game makes is trying to appear like a TPS, when in fact your accuracy and other things are based on levelling skills and not the player skill. It makes a terrible first impression if you go in thinking it's an actual shooter/RPG hybrid like Mass Effect is.

btw, Mike's voice acting isn't as truly terrible as some of the videos seemed to show. That's a relief.

Fuck those hack minigames though. Fuck them up their shitty annoying alarm sounding asses. lol wut

edit: Apparently you can't alt+tab to post a stupid forum comment without it crashing.

Took me a while to fully eliminate the mouse issues. The game is 10x more fun when controls aren't in the way.

set bEnableMouseSmoothing=False
in \Alpha Protocol\APGame\Config\DefaultInput.ini

then 2 instances of that same var in
<username>\My Documents\Alpha Protocol\APGame\Config\APInput.ini

Also set in <username>\My Documents\Alpha Protocol\APGame\Config\APEngine.ini
the following:

[Engine.GameEngine]
bSmoothFrameRate=FALSE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=1024
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=4096

[SystemSettings]
UseVsync=False

(The VSync option in the game does nothing, you have to change it manually)

And finally after all customizations set all user config files in

<username>\My Documents\Alpha Protocol\APGame\Config\

to read only.

// Edit

What this does is remove that sudden mouse speedup when your framerate drops beneath certain threshold - therefore it eliminates mouse imprecision.

Why do games always assume because you are low level you are terrible? That is really awful from a storytelling and gameplay point of view. My characters background said I had been working as an agent for the state department for years. I should be able to shoot a pistol as well as a policeman from buckfuck nowhere. You should start the game being good at what you do. AS you level up you should become the best in the world. Not as ineffectual as as a girl scout with a pocket knife. Why would Alpha Protocol hire someone that can't even fire more than 3 pistol rounds accurately in 5 seconds? This is obviously not the only game that suffers from this broken logic. Start off good, become amazing. As to the gameplay point of view it is no fun to be a character with no skill and no abilities. I don't want to have my hand held for the entire time. They give you the paper thin reason of not supplying you with any equipment because they are trying to keep their existence secret. This is a bad excuse by the developers to make you earn everything when it makes no sense from a story point of view and has no reason from a gameplay point of view. If this is such an important mission vital to national security they think they could launder you some cash to pay off local contacts. They set you up with that safehouse with the computer that takes up an entire wall, and has the magical gun locker that unfolds like a god damn transformer, but they couldn't give you any decent equipment. What is wrong with starting off with decent skills and the equipment needed to properly do your job? Its like if I tried to play a flight sim but they didn't give me landing gear. They take what is interesting about the game the story and dialogue system and then totally throw it out the window in favor of lousy combat. Just because something has upgradeable skills does not mean it as an RPG. You wouldn't really consider Batman: Arkham Asylum an RPG. At least in that game you started off as a badass . You got tools that added more utility, but your basic skills remained the same. At every point you always felt like the god damn batman. This game doesn't make me feel like a badass secret agent at all.

Ok, this is for those of you that are complaining about the gunplay (as I initially did before realising!);

THIS IS NOT A TWITCH SHOOTER! This is no more of a dedicated twitch shooter than Vampire Bloodlines or Deus Ex/System Shock 2. It is first and foremost an RPG! Shitty stats/skills = shitty accuracy/damage. If you loved Deus Ex or Bloodlines, you'll love this. If you're looking more for a Gears of Bore or Mass Effect 2 clone, this isn't for you.

Simple.

It really isn't an RPG. It is an action game with bad action.

Well, that's your opinion after what? 20 minutes of play? Epsilon and myself have been playing for hours and we very much disagree. Deus Ex had "bad action" when you were an unleveled, unskilled, noob.... you have to level up. It IS an RPG. End of story.

Which again I will restate my point about how stupid is it that you start off as an unskilled noob in an game where you are supposed to be an international super spy. As well that just because a game has RPG elements does not mean it is an RPG. MLB The Show for PS3 allows you start off as an unskilled noob and level up. It is a baseball game not an RPG. The term is bandied about far to freely by people that have never even played a real RPG.

Ahh, so just because you dislike the game and give silly reasons for doing so, that means we've never played a "real" RPG before? Awesome, way to impose your own superiority on everyone else Cool Face As for "how stupid is it.. blah blah blah" I, once again, refer you to Deus Ex. You start off as an unskilled noob when you're supposed to be a UNATCO agent, there to help keep the country safe from terrorists. I'll bet you slag off Deus Ex too next, right?

Oh and there are backgrounds for each starting "class" - so technically; no, you don't start off as an unskilled noob. The first three classes give you a SHITLOAD of points in three specialised areas, or you can choose a Freelancer and put your own points in. Each class has a back story to explain why you have those starting skills, so I'm betting you chose RECRUIT (zero skills, zero points, with a backstory stating you are FRESH out of the academy) and are now whining about the fact that you're a noob.

Seriously man, for someone who has played "real RPGz!!!11" you really should pay more attention to the options and choices you're selecting :\

The other way around, Deus Ex's GFX is timeless, unlike this crap which already feels outdated.

Yes, yes... we've covered the graphics. Nobody will deny that AP has very poor graphics for a new title -- but it's the GAMEPLAY that matters in this case.

That seems to fix it, no more ugh noises on menu, regular menu music, etc...

More detailed instructions:

Run regedit.exe. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and find the SEGA Corporation folder and Obsidian folder and delete them. If your on a x64 system these folders will be found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node. Also, delete the SEGA Corporation folder found in C:\ProgramData. Enjoy!

Worked! Thx a lot!

Yes, but since it's the UT3 engine you would probably have to rename the exe to UT3.exe and force it in your video card control panel. Like with Mass Effect 2. THe jaggies aren't too bad on mine without AA though. I doubt it would really help the game look any better.

I just got 20k for beating some of the people in the Gray-box with stealth, totally optional quest. Awesome stuff so far.

For those complaining the crack doesn't work:

It works with both versions, but if you're having problems, go and delete the C:/ProgramData/SEGA Corporation folder. Then start the game. (Be sure to block the game with your firewall, otherwise you're gonna get the problem again).

Ok, that's just funny! I think I might just hang on to this legit install for a while then, knowing my luck I'd revoke the activation and use the crack... only to find some gruesome and game-killing trigger later on >_> Besides, I'm gonna finish the 360 one first. I was initially going to swap immediately, but I'm VERY far in the 360 version.

Yeah, THAT is seriously fucking annoying. It's a tough puzzle to control on the 360, when you have to use each analogue stick, but on the PC it's downright nasty.

That is one place where you can really tell it was developed for consoles first. It's a sloppy port for those controls on the hacking. Using the keyboard works great but switching to the mouse for the second code is extremely awkward. Still, once I got used to it I didn't really have a problem anymore other than the fact that it's just annoying.

The interface is also rather clunky for the PC but still workable once you learn it.

I finished the Moscow hub earlier today and am now towards the end (I believe) of Taipei. Lots of fun, really enjoying myself. The characters are awesome.

I'm just thankful they at least let you quit a hack and restart without any penalty. Anyway, I'm really loving stealthing through a mission. I'm only on the first one but I haven't shot my pistol yet or even killed anyone.
