Hmmm I see all personal attacks and critics as raging posts. Why ? 'Cause anybody who played WoW and eventually stopped knows I'm right instead of saying I'm clueless.
This topic is biased, it s like a wow players reunion so of course I get flame saying bad stuff about "their" game, cuz you know this game is too fucking perfect for me

So I guess some people aren't the same that's all. I played for 6 months after the game got out (and played 4 Months of the Closed Beta), cleared MC and stopped playing the game. Tried BC with my "free pass" when it was out, didn't even play 1 day, I stopped after 5min.
A friend of mine lent me his WOTLK beta account, tried to make a DK, and stop playing after 10min.
Dunno but for some reason I thought it was boring, even though these 6 months I played were great and I thought WoW was really good and enjoyable. So yeah, I think after these years something is missing from the game, else I wouldn't be bored of it after 10min of a new expansion for a game I used to think was fun before !

Playing for "5 minutes" or "10 minutes" and judging something is simply not enough and makes your "opinion" worthless here.

apart better graphics, better ui in a way , everything is exactly the same, in the first couple of hours.. and you blame expansions?
its as retarded as me claiming that vanilla quests were better than wotlk, they were terrible compared to wotlk ones ..
its just silly that you come to gaming forums and rant about how wow sucked, after 5 mins. Many games blows in first 2-3 hours, i could name 50 games, which i didnt exactly enjoy or found special in first 2-3 hours, but absolutely loved after that.
And there is reason why you didnt enjoy tbc and wotlk , you werent planing to play, you werent planing to pay for game time or buy expansions, and you had no reason at all to play thus making game meh, i know cuz half of my mmorpg trials ends in same way
But i dont spread heresy about those games, just cuz i had no intention to play them, and only did trials cuz i was bored

I didn't say WoW sucked after 5min, I said its expansions. After 5Min of WoW vanilla I was conquered by the game, but after 5min of the expansions, I was thinking of playing a "new game" but oh well it was just the same stuff, rehashed...
But you are right on the point I wasn't planning to pay, although I think the purpose of the trial (specially when they email you begging you to try it to come back) is to make you like the game and pay. Oh well, I know friends like you that played, stop, played stop, and eventually when I asked them what's so cool now since WoW vanilla, I hardly ever get a legit answer.
They tell me : "yes, it's the same shit, just rehashed, still quests that asks you to farm, still raid with big bad mobs that drop epic stuff" but they tell me too "yeah we gotta admit, it's easier than in 2005 now, anyone can get epic items while before you needed to work your ass off to get your blue tier 0". But still they continue to play the game after a while, but they don't know why.
So since you guys love the expansions so much, may I ask you what's so incredible about them ? (I'm not speaking about the new class, the new tradekills or the flying mounts, or even Arenas, these are "patches" to me, just like the battlegrounds were back then, not expansions. I know about all these stuff, but it's secondary to the main game mechanics IMO)
Please let me know, maybe I'm wrong about letting WoW go.

Ok, after reading all your posts its not difficult to conclude why you didn't play WoW after MC.....you got bored. Yes, there is no big philosophical truth or deeper meaning behind it, you just got bored of it. It does happen, its nothing unusual, some people got bored of it after a week, some after month, some after year or four years and some still play same character as main as they did in vanilla. So you don't have to "blame" game for it. Game did evolve in boundaries that game design allows, some things may have become more accessible but it is still big time sink if you want to play it that way. There are still hard raid encounters and lots of stuff to waste time on ( or put time in ) as Smikis explained in posts earlier.
Just a word about "epics". Think in 2010 people should really let go of using that vanilla term. Although blizzard ( as far as i know ) didn't address it officially, it is clear that indexing/valuing items by color has been more or less ditched with TBC and even more with Wotlk. There are still green, blue and purle items but its evident that starting with tbc values of items are mostly determined by "item lvl".

I see. Then I think I got my hopes up thinking an expansion pack would make me unbored of the game... Meh, as you said it's nothing unusual, I'd rather get bored of WoW than any other game since WoW can be as you said a time sinker (although I'm not saying IT IS a time sinker, because if you manage your time correctly, you can play it whenever you want to).
But as I told ealier, I gotta admit this was one of the best game I ever played in 2005 and I enjoyed it very much, thus there is no way I can criticize the game as it was. And yeah, thinking about it, I think it isn't fair to criticize the game now either since I didn't play it as much as vanilla WoW. But what if the expansions (Cataclysm ?) could have been so good that it would have made me un-bored ? That's my point, I think they can do that and make the game feel fresh again.
And they eventually didn't achieve this, else I don't think I would still be bored with WoW.
But anyway to go back on topic, I think with Cataclysm they wanna play on nostalgia and get old players like me back into the game, so we'll see how it goes ! Because for sure I mostly played WoW because of the world itself, the art style which I liked (and still like), and I know I didn't feel as enthusiastic when I went through the Dark Portal seeing these desert plains rather than entering Stormwind, or even killing "Young Wolves" in Elwynn Forest

Do you know that playing nostalgia card to bash the game is just silly?
All of us can agree that xxx game we played 5-10 years ago, was so much better than game we got 2 months ago , all of us can agree that new game might be more interesting than old one, and the first game we played will be the best.
Maybe you just aint that old yet, to realize obvious things 99% of gamers, i actually have hard time believing that you used nostalgia and first game impressions to make a point.
Again with easer to get and whole epics things, its faster to get, not easer, if faster = easer to you, you might wanna recheck the meaning of those 2 words.
Sure 5 man strat/shcolo before the nerfs, was insanely hard, and you would have barely 5-10 ppl per server who completed strat quest , i was one of them , it was just as hard as early tbc heroics before the nerfs, before all the epic gear, only one group per guild could do it, and only couple guilds would that such skilled players.. i led group like that, and i did them , yes wotlk heroics werent anywhere near as hard as tbc heroics , but they were still hard enough in first month of the game , its then when ur supposed to do them for actual gear,
Yes gearing is much faster, or is it? i still remember outfiting our new members in vanilla, after 2 days, do bwl aq naxx raids, get lucky with drops, from blue gear ppl went to best gear in game, within days, sure you can say that only few were so lucky to join such guilds, or even get lucky with drops , its still pretty much the same , only few can get the best gear in game, sure 50% pop can get same gear 2 months after you got, but thats the point, you already have them and so on and on.
Whats so special about wow and its expansions, well first you need a guild to play with, otherwise its meh , second you need to look at it as competitive game for example, i love to race to max lvl cap, get best gear , even get new achievements, this is mostly why i come back before expansion, and quit couple of the months after,
but if new expansion holds me for 3 months im happy with it.
I can agree that coming into the game 5 months after expansions, and finding yourself alone might be boring, but not everyone got same play style, many of players play cuz they got a lot of friends in it.. but hey i was never facebookshit fan .
I still think mmo is most fun when its new and fresh, would it be expansion as new start, or just new mmo, you lvlup with lots of ppl easy grouping, you race for things, you spamm your guild chat with new things , you do instance as first in the server= thats fun, humans are competitive species, so if you take all of those away , half of us will find wow or any mmo for that fact boring, and considering everyone knows wow, and considering we always hate the big thing unless we love it, we end up having gazilion clueless players bashing game for no reason

I think you are right on most points. And now that I think about it, I think one of the part explaining why I get bored now is because most of my IRL friends stop playing the game, while back then we all bought the game the same day and all played altogether till lvl 60 (instances, etc). This was great fun.
And now, most of them have stopped.... As you told friends play a large part of it. I had guild friends back then too, they were fun, it was nice and all, but for sure I don't have the time to play WoW that much to be in a guild (if I ever play the game again), so I think I had in mind the solo part of the game which is indeed boring in my case.

I'm not even going to bother reading this thread.
I know what it consists of:
WOW IS AWESOME
WOW SUCKS
WOW IS AWESOME
WOW SUCKS
WOW IS AWESOME
WOW SUCKS
WOW IS AWESOME
WOW SUCKS
<INSERT ATTEMPT AT RATIONALIZATION WHY WOW IS AWESOME>
<INSERT ATTEMPT AT RATIONALIZATION WHY WOW SUCKS>
Rinse.
Repeat.
Also, if it does not contain said argument, not only will I be shocked, but I suppose it will only take a couple more weeks until it does.

lol@ the second link... the subtitle to that picture.
"Character reflections in water: bringing MMOs into a world FPS games have enjoyed for several years."
Shouldn't that be more like "bringing WoW into a world all other games have enjoyed for several years."?

I played WoW for 6-7 months, ended up with a Hunter and Paladin @ lvl80 and the game just died. I did the ICC instances a dozen times and I realized the game was dead to me. It was all repetition from there, the same boring constant need to get better gear, collect rides, run all those boring seasonal challenges etc..
Btw, I hated PvP in WoW so I never played PvP except for Wintergrasp. When it all becomes a chore to get emblems, stones, ingredients, gear etc. it's time to quit. I don't understand people who keep playing WoW year after year, it's the same old shit, and they keep making it easier and easier. By the time I quit anybody could grind a few days or a week to get highest tier gear.
But I'll let people who enjoy it continue to do so. I don't see how, but it's their problem.

I dont see how you can bash the game when you openly state you didnt play half the game..
