|
 |
Hi all,
My console auto loads USB LOADER GX. Recently (hadn't done anything), when getting into USB Loader either:
a) the wiimote won't sync and thus i cannot control anything or load a game
b) the wiimote works for a bit but crashes with either memory error (black screen / white text), freezes, or crashes with a colourful screen.
This never happened before, but just started happening. I suspected memory fault but i'm not so sure now!
I then decided to replace my older version of USB LOADER GX with the newest, and also updated to the most recent version of Wiiloader. I also got a newer USB LOADER GX FORWARDER.dol and installed that in Wiiloader.
So now when it boots, it doesn't auto initialise the controllers. This isn't a problem, pressing A will bring the Wiimote into life. It doesn't seem to be crashing in USB LOADER GX any more, but just now I tried Mario Galaxy and after the health warnings, the game just went black (and once again the Wiimote wasn't synced / initialised with the console). I turned off the Wii, started it again, and tried Galaxy a second time and it worked perfectly... how can it be working sometimes and not others? Why are the wiimotes sometimes initiated but not others?
I'm not sure whats going on here - as far as I know, i'm running the latest version of USB LOADER GX and Wiiloader. Do I need to update / install newer ISO / cIOS revisions? (this console was modded in Nov 2009 so assume all cIOS are from that period.
Funny thing is, if I go to systemmenu and then try loading USB LOADER GX from my homescreen (i installed a shortcut), the same thing happens - which leads me to believe it's nothing to do with the forwarder.
Any advice more than welcome!

It's kinda complicated, I'll just send you a PM on how I did my own Wii console and what I've learned from that and maybe it'll help, can't link to such stuff directly either.
It's complicated as I said with for example because USB loader GX is updated frequently but the latest couple of builds are very buggy for a lot of people and systems and also that the custom IOS revisions are also being updated and there's a variety of loaders available each with their own drawbacks and strengths.
(What to say more, some games tie to specific IOS's so custom IOS's need to be installed or reinstalled depending upon that and the late 2009 and newer Wii's have stronger firmware and can't load backup discs aside from external DVD reader via USB and the various so called DOL patches to avoid certain protections used in for example Metroid Prime Trilogy, Red Steel and it's sequel, Far Cry, NSMB and so on up to Prince of Persia.)
I'll try to explain it better in a PM.

thanks for all your help bud!
For everyone interested, I updated my CIOSx to rev 19 (via internet update). I then tried Configurable USB Loader (thanks to the recommendation of JBeckman). All of my issues seem resolved - it looks like USB LOADER GX was the primary cause of all issues. I have since used Wiiloader forwarder so that Configurable USB Loader boots instantly upon start up. While it's slightly less pretty than USB Loader GX, it does a shit load more - including back covers, game synopsis, etc. It's also mega stable and updated nearly every week (you can update from within the tool).
One thing I'm still confused on is different IOS for different games. JBeckman, say for instance the new Mario Galaxy 2 game requires a new set of IOS or whatever - you said you can install lots of different versions? I see in Configurable USB Loader you can choose an CIOS to play the game with - this defaults at 249. Would I then install a different IOS to, say, CIOS250 and get the game to play via that?

Ah no to explain somewhat better I meant that various titles prefer different IOS's and cIOS setups usually allow a choice of which IOS to emulate such as Waninkoko Rev 19as either 57 or 37 and so on, certain choices also affect other capabilities though I do not know much about this.
(Monster Hunter for example only seems to work via IOS 37 whereas Prince of Persia unless hacked only works against IOS 53)
The guide I PM'ed you linked to GBATemp and a article on how to set up custom IOS v.5 and Waninkoko Rev 19 to take up IOS 249 and 250 plus 222, 223 and 224 for different purposes, 249 would be used in general but 250 and the CIOS 5 222 to 224 would help for other specific needs.
This also doesn't cover much of the custom .DOL patches available which certain titles require such as Far Cry using a IOS reload which would normally freeze the loader haflway trough a certain level or Metroid Prime Trilogy having a check in the main menu when choosing which title to play.
(New Mario also has some sort of protection but most loaders and cIOS can handle it by now, Prince of Persia can detect recent Waninkoko and CIOS revisions and will lock when for example opening a chest plus it ties best to IOS 53 which no custom IOS installs as and might be buggy in general otherwise though workarounds and patches are being worked on and improved.)
All in all newer titles might use different protections so being up to date will be beneficial to allow them to work as intended though as demonstrated with PoP sometimes older revisions are useful as well, it's a bit tricky.
(And again I'm not that good at explaining though what I linked to was mostly easy to follow and user friendly guides on setting up Homebrew channel, PriiLoader, IOS installation and using multiple cIOS along with the main 4.2 firmare and system update plus recommendations like CFG Loader and ULoader alongside GX as it's been a bit buggy lately though all work quite OK just that ULoader, NeoGamma and CFG loader allow for alternate dol files on bootup and not just the main disc based main.dol for the main menu which helps with certain protections.)
EDIT: Also Mario Galaxy 2 is mostly speculation but as it is a first party title (Nintendo themselves.) and that their other titles also experimented with different copy protection like methods there's a large chance of it using some form of protection either a cIOS detection or that it would need a alternate .dol file to boot via, most extreme case would be a need for a certain IOS file to be updated which would need a new cIOS update altogether.
(IOS so far range from 1 to 255 as seen via DOP-Mii which I linked you to but not all are used and several use so called "stubs" which was another anti-piracy measure from Nintendo to block certain "slots" from being installed to.)
