I got the RROD with 3 lights so after doing the X Clamp fix it boots up fine but freezes after about 10 minutes gameplay and gives me 3 red lights and a 0022 code when I power it back up, which is apparently GPU overheating. I figured it could be the cheap thermal paste I used so I dismantle it and apply Arctic Silver. Thinking this might fix the problem, the exact same thing occurs. Both the CPU and GPU heatsinks are very hot. From a cold boot the console powers up fine and it's only after 10 minutes that it overheats. Before it freezes the fans get significantly faster and noisier. This is highly frustrating as I want to play Red Dead Redemption lol. Is there anything I can do to resolve the situation without having to get another Xbox 360? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

You might've done something wrong with the X-Clamp fix. It should definitely last longer than 10 minutes. Maybe the screws aren't tight enough? Or the plastic airflow thing isnt positioned correctly? I guess it could just be FUBARed from the first RROD so X-Clamp might not help.

When I was testing it, it wasn't in the housing and so there was no shroud either. I didn't see the point of reassembling it just in case it didn't work. Turns out I was right lol.

it will really help and/or prevent any more problems if you wire your fans to a 12v lead. it will make more noise but you shouldn't have anymore problems from it either.

By shroud do you mean the plastic thing that redirects the airflow? I'd strongly suggest you don't start the xbox without it, otherwise the GPU heatsink will barely be cooled.

Yeah I think its official name is a shroud. I wasnt aware it redirects the airflow and I never thought of it helping to cool the heatsinks. Hmmm.

Buy a ps3 noob, I've had 3 360's, all messed up.
Ps3 s are better imo anyway.

Ok so I posted my problem on Llamma repair forums and someone suggested the overheating could be caused by a damaged solder joint under the GPU and suggested I do a home reflow with a conventional oven. Daunting to say the least but following a guide, I gave it a go! Im just waiting for it to cool down but here are some pics.

The bare board ...

Then I covered the caps with sellotape.

Then masking tape.

Then bubblewrap.

Then clothing which was an old t-shirt I cut up.

And finally foil.

Into the oven at 90c for 1 minute. Increase the temperature to 150c for another minute, then upto 180c for another minute, then 200c for another minute and finally 230c for 4 minutes.

It seems ok but is still pretty hot! Once its cool I guess Ill put it all back together and see what happens! lol.

Not sure how long it will last but it all seems good to me!

Played Red Dead Redemption for an hour, and with the shroud attached! The heatsink got pretty warm but the Xbox worked without freezing for a full 60 minutes.

I guess the real test will be tomorrow when I have plenty of time for a good gaming session! Smile

Fingers crossed lol.

Looks like you went through alot to get it working again. From what I've experienced and heard it's always gonna be a matter of time before it either temporarily or totally breaks. Here's to hoping you'll get at least a good while of playing time out of it before it breaks again Smile
