|
 |
Red Eagle Games announces that Obsidian Entertainment will "assist" them in the development of new titles based on Robert Jordan's series of fantasy novels, collectively known as The Wheel Of Time: Red Eagle Games and Obsidian Entertainment today announced they have entered into a services agreement which provides a comprehensive framework for Obsidian Entertainment to work closely with Red Eagle Games' in-house development team to create new video games for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 based on Robert Jordan's best-selling fantasy series, The Wheel of Time.
"The development team at Obsidian Entertainment has demonstrated time and again that they can successfully blend storytelling with technology to craft a superior RPG game experience," said Rick Selvage, Chief Executive Officer of Red Eagle Games. "Obsidian Entertainment is the ideal development partner to help Red Eagle Games take Jordan's beloved characters from the printed page to exciting new forms of interactive media."
"Obsidian Entertainment is thrilled with this opportunity to work with Red Eagle Games in developing games based upon The Wheel of Time series," said Feargus Urquhart, Chief Executive Officer of Obsidian Entertainment. "The Wheel of Time is a rich universe that lends itself to incredible gaming possibilities."

Wheel of Time is one hell of a franchise. Lots to screw up but could be one hell of a game if done right. Here's to hoping.

I remember having a good time playing that Wheel of time game '99. Let's see how this one will turn out.

Yes, it used the unreal engine and was quite nice actually. Very underrated game.

The books are awesomely epic, but the immense scope and depth of the story and characters will really be a challenge to transpose into a game... let's hope they don't fuck it up...

Read the article. Obsidian isn't making it. Red Eagle is. They are just getting some technical assistance from Obsidian.

You're probably referring to the FPS which came out in 2000. The game itself wasn't that good, but the setting was great and I definately see potential here.

Yeah WoT has a great setting. Story is pretty decent too. The writing on the middle books blows pretty hard though.

Obsidian's CEO disagree's with you, Red Eagle has the license and hopes they'll be the publisher of the game, Obsidian will be the developer: http://www.gamebanshee.com/interviews/98583-e3-2010-feargus-urquhart.html
So the arrangement there, which is kind of explained in the press release, is that Red Eagle Games wants to do it. They have the license to do it, and we’ll be the developer if it all comes about. What they’re doing is they want to actually be the publisher of it, not just the guys holding the license.
So, what they’re doing right now is, in essence, putting together a whole business around The Wheel of Time games. Not just one game, but multiple games. And they are talking to people about creative ways to fund all of these, and then distribute them through a publisher.

Okay I was wrong. The original article was a little hazy on it though. Well that could be great. Provided Obsidian can do better than they did with Alpha Protocol. We will see when New Vegas rolls around. I am very excited for this game as I am such a big fan. Was in the middle of reading Lord of Chaos when I refreshed the forum and saw this thread bumped. Will be a day one purchase regardless of final quality.

Would've been nice to see the One Power in action in a high-budget "next-gen" game, but an isometric old school RPG in WoT setting sounds even better.

I wouldn't want to play as a good character..
Gief me Mordeth(my favorite one, god, I hate how they killed him ;( such a shame, so much potential)! Ishamael! At least a dark friend who slowly comes into power and becomes one of The Chosen and wrecks havoc on the world of men ;P or even better.. let us follow in the steps of Padan Fain but gief us a chance to actually succeed )

I never read the books since it seems one of those neverending fantasy stories (it's still going after the author's death ffs), but I like the idea of Obsidian working on an RPG based on a (supposedly) good story.

The author didn't have time to finish it coz he got sick and died. Based on his notes another guy finished the series. So it is not going anywhere. It is finished.=)
Although I have to say Jordan wasted too much time on nonsense , the series could have been much shorter. He realized his mistakes and changed the pace later on but it was too late for him.

Indeed it was =). And unfortunately it was criminally underrated, too..
I'm not much of a reader nowadays because of the lack of time, but I can't deny that a potential brand new RPG made in Obsidian based on that universe is something that goes straight into my must-play list. Like all the Obsidian games after all, these guys have never disappointed me so far.

I seriously doubt they will try Kickstarting WoT, especially after it proved to be poison once already. The way Feargus phrased it made it sound to me like the licensed IP is a recent deal they have cooked up, not something they already had laying around.
