Every studio I've spoken to that does this, to a fault, says that many of the games they've released are far too big and far too hard for most players' behavior. As a general rule, less than five percent of a game's audience plays a title through to completion. I've had several studios tell me that their general observation is that "more than 90 percent" of a games audience will play it for "just four or five hours."

I may be a slow ass finn here, but does that mean 4 or 5 hours per session or games in total?
How do they follow that and doesn't it depend on what kind of a game is at hand?

If it's an action game that lasts 4-6 hours, then it tells you that they don't want to replay it.
If it's some other genre that would last 10-50 hours, then it might tell you that they didn't like it or they play it small doses(like I do sometimes).
I hate it when devs and publishers or whoever do some research and take the info AS IS and don't think about the reasons behind them.

F*cking hate statistics. Evil or Very Mad

ps. Also if the game doesn't work well with alt-tab,then of course you are going to see a lot of 30 min-1 hour playing times. Very Happy

Come on, there is no way, those people that paid for that short-ass game, didn't finish it. I call bullshit, or rather the bug they suspect !

While I didn't buy EP1`(I dislike Half-life) I can assure you there are people who buy short games and don't finish em. As I said before, look at my stack of original console games. Most are unfinished. Same for all the PC games I "Aquired" And that while I spend some 4 to 6 hours a day playing games...

Hey, if we follow the Valve statistics, the majority of players still use 1024x768. Laughing

There's 2 things i like about games. When a game is hard and makes you stop and think for a moment. I always say "wow.. this game is actually hard.. gimme gimme" in my mind ^Smile Basicly this is my only hobby - being challenged in non-gimmick video games.
And when its not shorter than i wanted it to be.
Time to find myself a new hobby ..

based on op's post i think they should ditch the whole dlc thing and just make expantions; even if it takes a while after releases, good titles will always have good sales on expantions

If it's true that several developers think that games should be shorter because of the majority of gamers gaming habits are changing in favor of shorter games, then I call BULLSHIT!!!

You got to remember to think about the developers agenda and that is to make a lot of $. Now if we all just accepted that "YES! WE NEED SHORTER GAMES BECAUSE EVERYBODY WHO IS COOL LIKE IT THIS WAY" then we would just shoot ourselves in the foot, because games aren't getting cheaper just because they are short (Modern Warfare 2 anyone?).

I really wish that more developers would focus on good gameplay & story instead of making every game look like a movie with Michael Bay Filter On (a very short movie that is) because great GFX come and go, but it's the great gameplay that makes me come back for more but of course that won't give the Devs more of MY money.

I'm just fed up with reading gaming news on the "Official" sites, as it seems to be all about how much money will this game rake in "And Look this DRM is sent from Hell!"

What happened to Good Gaming journalism where the focus was on gameplay and journalists wasn't afraid to "Chainsaw" a game verbally if they felt that it really deserved it?
It guess there just to many interested parties these days, and they wall want a BIG slice of the cake

Imho, the golden days of gaming ended when almost every game had to be a AAA title with a budget to rival a Hollywood movie. This is Imho a major problem as there simply is too much at stake when making a game so most companies just play it safe and make something short that we have seen WAY to many times (It looks Sexy but it's way too short Smile No pun intended Smile
