As the title says.
My father got an "old" pc from where he works, it's better than the one he uses so he asked me to put all the old componets (gfx card, hdds, dvd, RAM) into the other case.
So basically the only things that changed are the mainboard and the CPU but now Windows ain't working no more.
Everytime I try to boot the system it stops with a blue screen which looks pretty much like this one (I suppse the adress is a different one but meh):
 Spoiler:

Ran checkdisk came up with nothing, tired fixing the MBR which didn't help.
Switched the IDE ports around which didn't work.
So right now I'm totally dazzled since the only thing I could think of would be to reinstall Windows and see if it works.
Any other ideas that I might try?
Much appreciated.

I switched from a Celeron 300MHz (running at 450MHz) to an AMD Athlon with another MB in the past.
Old install was WinXP x86, after a couple of reboots it worked perfectly again for couple of years.
Must say I have become to old to do a reinstall too often.

What OS does it run?
So what does that BSOD tell you?
Hardware problem?
Tried safe mode yet?
Perhaps try an upgrade install?

Windows loads drivers for your old stuff at which point it crashes. As iconized said, try safemode. But seriously, a fresh install is the best option, you won't have some old drivers and stuff messing up.

Hey it worked in the past. Couple of times at least.
Plus, if it were my own system I'd have reinstalled the OS already but since it's my dad's I'd like to avoid it if possible.

@iconized:
Vista x86
look at the spoiler
nope
not working

@Mortibus
Just for curiosity's sake what would that other way be? (no need to detail it just drop a line or two, I can google the rest).

Guess I'll just have to bite the apple and reinstall the OS.
God I remember the days when I had to do that on a nearly monthly basis Very Happy
I don't really miss those them.

You must format and reinstall windows when you use a different CPU and MOBO. If not, you get the blue screen your looking at. Seriously, its not that difficult to put the hard drive in an external case and backup the stuff and then format.

That's actually a lot simpler than I expected Very Happy
But yeah, thinking about it now, I should have known.
I have no idea why it didn't occur to me Facepalm
Let's see if I can convice Vista to install itself over the old installation *shrug*
We'll see.

Vista doesn't have a repair option like XP? Switched an mb once and didn't even have to reinstall.

There are simple repairs which can be done from booting in the disk. For a repair like the full repair in XP, where everything is reinstalled but settings are kept, just start a new install and upgrade your current Vista/7 installation. Smile

Install wouldn't let me upgrade from Vista to Vista so I worked around with a Linux live dvd to get any personal data my dad left on the hdd and then just installed Vista all new and fresh.
Well, I'm done now so this thread can go and sink into oblivion Laughing
