Ugh. Started a disc-defragmentation when I went to bed. That was 11 hours ago, and it's still not finished.

Thats normal and depends on the defrag method and your free space on that hdd. But its worth the wait because it improves performance and hdd lifetime. Next time you do it, it will me much quicker.

I have scheduled in W7 that every disk is defragmented on Wednesday at 13:00 works like a charm ^^

I use Raxco Perfect Disk. Just set it to stealth and then forget all about ever defragmenting again.

Does it really improve hdd lifetime? I know it improves performance but never heard of it improving hdd lifetime.

if you defrag regularly the seeks / reads and writes will be less broken up and randomized but i doubt it will have much effect on the wear and tear of a hdd. Might help a little, but it would be hard to quantifiy that, i guess. |

I much prefer the disks being defraged when they are idle rather than a screensaver mode. Not too sure how much would actually get done if I used a screensaver mode either as my PC is never really in it.

well, stick with perfect disk than. If it was free, i d use that as well, because it seems to be the best commercial defragger =) |

500$ for 128GB, but it's worth it, no defragmentation, no noise, awesome windows performance

Actually, it becomes just as fragmented as a mechanical HD. The difference is that there's no point in defragging the SSD since there are no physical parts that has to move around. Fragged/defragged, it doesn't matter with SSD's.

best defrag program to date is PerfectDisk 10, not only it defrags silently in the background but also it defrags registry and hdd mdr boot sectors

your joking about the if it was free bit right 
its free has been for most pirates for a loooong time .....
it works well, 0&0 supposed to be best but I have feeling after using it a while it fubard one of my raptors... Im still in two minds about wether which of those defragers are better.. |

I use either Diskeeper or o&O Defrag, depending on the mood I have after reinstalling Windows. Now I use Diskeeper.

I wouldnt trust a background defragger if you paid me... your all n00bs if you use such things.. The only true way to properly defrag is with no use of the pc (wether they tell u its idle or not in such "silent defrag tools")
That even means no mouse movement btw... And one pass is never enough, ever.. For a proper job..

Lol you really think it makes a difference if those few kilo/megabyte sized files that were in use don't get defragmented. You're splitting hairs.

I'm just claiming it's not worth calling people noobs for few small fragmented files that were left.
And real time and idle defraggers are generally better at organizing your files, as they get to do it constantly. Imagine defragging every few months, when there are hundreds of fragmented files, it's really hard to get them in proper order without doing multiple defrags, and maybe not even then. But having one running constantly is a better option generally, in my opinion, but in others as well (google for a few articles on the topic).

Yes defrag more == less to do when or if u do a main pass now and again, but for instance if your playing/doing the same things over and over again without much change, a proper layout ini and a proper thorough few passes in a particular order is more beneficial id say..
But I guess im forgetting the fact pc's are getting more cores these days to cope with such things, so maybe all in all its doable as we progress in tech, and its implications would not be so much an issue.. I do wonder though if real time/idle time defrags scatter ur files when your in use of an app/game cause then the defragger tends to stop if you interupt it etc and lo and behold maybe you got some files that end and some files this end still as your doing your thang!
Ive just not seen any push for such use of a defragger on the buisness side of things anyway, a few old co-workers still mock the use of such nifty gadgety type modes But hey maybe they are old dogs that wont learn new tricks |

Stealth defraggers don't constantly defrag all the time.
As for the scattering of files after running an app or game, I would have thought that when defragging, the file is copied to another area on the disk and only then is the original fragmented parts deleted. That's the only way that would make sense to me?

it would make sense but that seems bloody stupid seeing as ur supposed to be deframenting files not making more allocations for moved files cause u wanted to start a intensely file related game up lol..
dunno either way the std defrag or uber ibm ways or anyother i guess is ok, marginal changes then but for the perfeectionist you could probably defrag all day everyday

Dumped perfectdisk for O&O. Perfectdisk seemed to always want to defrag..always. O&O runs alot less and does a great job. Perfectdisk also installed more services at startup than O&O.
