no deeplinks...
and I`m just kidding dude.
The GTX470 is a nice card.
But everybody was expecting more from Nvidia. Power consumption is just a no go. I mean, these cards need more power doing nothing than other peoples whole system under load. wtf is wrong with them?
I was looking forward to these cards myself, but now I swapped my 8800gt for a cheap 4870 1 Gig. I`ll wait till NVidia has the refresh ready and decide then what to get.
Fermi is just fail right now - for what they promised at least.

4XAA is notihng really, but what i will say about the noise level is... My ati can make just as much noise on 100% fan speed and sounds like im at an airforce base also.. i see no diff in that area of it all...

On that resolution the 470 is a semi-viable option, I'll give you that. But at that resolution, you're wasting money anyway unless you've overclocked that 920 of yours to 4+ GHz. If you look at the higher resolutions the 5870 often wins
And Moose, honestly, look at the videos from HardOCP to compare the noise. Your ATI doesn't ever get to that kind of fan speeds
And it technically can't even make that kind of noise; the fan on the GTX 480 is a much more powerful one

Yeah but at 1650 a 4870 or GTX 260 is more than plenty
You need to get a monitor with higher resolution to make use of your hardware

your talking out your arse lol, the fan on the 4870 fucking makes a fair racket at 100%, good thing is though if i was to leave it at 100 runnig a game id not move off 48c... where as im betting the nsmidia card would be able to cook your bacon sani in the morning..

When I hear my fan go loud during games, I know it's time to take the card out and blow the dust out lol. It's a cute indicator.
Also fan noise has more to do with fan design and parts used than just raw power.

Oh sorry, thought you meant a 58xx as well
Can't compare that though, as that's a generation ago. But even then, your 4870 won't spin at 80% speed under normal gaming conditions just to keep the temperature under 70 degrees
Can't remember which review it was, but with Furmark (which is the ultimate painbench temperature wise) the 480 hits 95-100 degrees at 85-90% fanspeed. My 5870 hits about 85-90 degrees as well, which is still friggin hot; but that's with 35-40% fanspeed
Sin, can you have a look what the 480's max RPM is? Download GPU-Z and shove the fan control up to 100% for a few seconds to see. I'm quite curious, because in one of the disassembled shots they showed the fan; a 12v/1.8A one, which is quite high actually.

for that price it`s ok to buy one I guess - but I would have waited.
Performance is good - temps and noise and power consumption would be a no go for me.

I recently did a non scientific comparison between a 5970 and a GTX 295, which was my former card. And while I'm not able to hear my 5970 during idle, I could definitely hear the 295, of course it was a lot louder under load as well.

I think the problem is not that it's too hot and consumes more power by itself, but the fact that you don't gain as much in performance for that increase in power consumption, if you compare it to Ati cards. It makes Nvidia's response that they made a trade off in power consumption to go for a high performing card seem ridiculous, considering that Ati runs not that much slower, but requires much less power.
In any case, there's no telling when is Nvidia going to release a refresh or whatever. Since it could be a few months/half a year, those who really want Nvidia and have been waiting to upgrade from 8-series for quite a while might not have much of a choice. Although personally, I'd wait forl some announcements on future plans from both companies, any new release would at least shift the prices around. Those with 200 series should definitely wait, in my opinion at least.

To be honest, anyone with ATI's HD48xx or NVIDIA's GT260+ should wait, those cards are still plenty fast.
We already know ATI has got something cooking for Q2/Q3, and NVIDIA can't be far behind since Fermi was originally scheduled for Q2 last year. Given previous development cycles, they should be ready with the refresh in Q2/Q3 as well. The fuckups with Fermi1 shouldn't have affected Fermi2 so

That`s the case here - I upgraded from 8800 GT to 4870 1Gig 2 days ago.
Sold my old card for 45 bucks - got he 4870 for 70 (had a defective cooler - didn`t matter for me, cause I`m using my Accelero S1 on this card - that I already used on my 8800 GT)
So - 300-400 bucks for a new card, or 25 bucks for a not so new card that will work fine for the next few month...
The thing is - for the price of the 480 you can buy a 5970... I know what I would buy...
