Ok I have been a gnome fan for years, I used to use KDE years ago but it got far too bloated for me, so I moved over to gnome and never regretted it.

I always used gnome with compiz (Beryl before that) to clean it up a little and for some reason wobbly windows just felt so right.

However after taking a sneak peak at gnome-shell and it stopped me using emerald theme manager to pretty things up, I was a little pissed off.

Now please understand gnome-shell, looks pretty, but it starts farting about with things like awn (http://wiki.awn-project.org/) although I am sure that is a bug because its not final and still alpha / beta, but it just seems to clutter up gnome, and change as we all know is baddddd! :Q

Now, it does do some things well, I like the desktop management, but I dont like the fact I couldnt move the bar, it didnt show me on the bar what I was running, and it was starting to feel like bloaty KDE 2, so I thought fuck it I will look at LgrinhurtE , XFCE and KDE4.

the first two are still very lightweight, and work well but just feel a little basic, I know through customization I could have tweaked them to what I wanted and I may do so at some point because as good as KDE4 is, it still feels bloated, but for now I am happy with KDE4.

I found with KDE4, I didnt need compiz, so it was one thing removed from the process's, it has a lot of visual effects built in, and although the wobbly windows dont feel as convincing as compiz, they feel more natural than the stiff windows in Windows or gnome / kde without using them.

You can of course run compiz and use that for visual effects rather than kwin, but why use it whenthe default can do it for you ?

It also has lots of other junk like the cube

You may have noticed that the desktops are blank, and they are by default, you have a whole set of widgets that you can clutter yourself up with, but I like blank desktops.

So in short.

KDE4 although much more feature packed than previous versions and a default gnome install feels much lighter. It zips along on my laptop and although it has a crap graphics card it runs as well as compiz did.

I am actually impressed with KDE for the first time in an age, I do plan to look at the other lightweight ones at some point, and also keep one eye on the progress of gnome-shell (gnome3) but at the point I am happy with KDE. gnome-shell may well end up being superb, but at the moment it looks like for me atleast KDE has become my default.

Basic Demo of KDE4 with widgets etc..

i tried gnome for a while when i stared on linux years ago and while it looked prettier, i always preferred kde in that i had more control over things and that it was just more logical for me
i tried the kde4.0 when it popped up back in the day and it just wasn't ready.. i'm still using 3.x and i guess i could upgrade but i'm afraid it will break something if i do (like updates in linux tend to do)
the packages are such a mess to fiddle around with that i've just left it be for now

i think i'll dd the system disk to safety and fiddle around a bit

KDE 4.3 was a big improvement in my opinion. I always preferred KDE to Gnome for some reason, just found it more "professional", but I really don't see the point in all the flaming wars going on between one side's fanboys and the other's. They are there to allow you to run your computer and applications, and nothing more.
I was also never a fan of all the silly advanced effects of Beryl and similar such, like the spinning cube, wobbling windows, etc., with which Linux users like to brag about when they want to counter Vista/7's look. I just don't see the point in having all these things that slow you down (I mean, not the PC, but your work - animation takes time to complete), but that's just me. Smile

I dont use the cube or any of the other junk, the wobbly windoes just feels natural and right, its not something I have to have, it just feels better.

dunno why.

agree about the cube though and all that gumph, dont see the point in it other than it looks pretty.

wish someone would develop a pixel-independent desktop system so that you would have infinite desktop size and you could freely zoom it back and forth
if you want to read something, you can zoom closer.. if you just want to have a glance at your email while watching a movie, zoom out a bit to have them both as smaller
fixed pixel size is a bit of an annoyance for me

This is theoretically possible with vector graphics displays, but these are hardly ready for primetime. Smile

um
it is possible today with ANY display - as evidenced by gnome-shell above
just needs somebody to write the code

Well, it is possible, but the problem with raster type displays and graphics is that it is very dependent on resolution, and is also very performance intensive to resize. Rendering as textures minimizes the performance somewhat, but still, the resolution dependency is a big problem.
