Actually the chain of events makes me believe it was shove down by Activision. Remember, Robert Bowling said in an interview that PC MP would be exactly the same as previous titles, including dedicated servers; few days later, it was announced no dedicated would be available, and Bowling said he had no idea. I don't think he lied, so I believe it was just a late decision from Activiosion to cashwhore on DLC on the PC as well.

So all they need to do is say that Activision axed dedicated server support Cool Face

I wouldn't be surprised if for the next game these two are in charge of development, they give an interview which is all about slamming Activision, and how they are all pro PC gamers, just like so many other companies used the momentum to promote their stuff. Laughing

i think, if you use reason, there is no doubt, that any "long term" decision (ded. servers etc) was made by activision. Look where infinity ward came from ... QUAKE, yes, quake, PC FPS, First woth MOH (yes yes) and then COD (quake 3 engine). the guys behind COD "ARE" PC FPS guys, not console guys. BUT like many others they sold their soul to big corps. lets hope the spit puts them back on their track.

I suppose this was expected. Although it is still unclear how this will all play out considering the ongoing lawsuits and all.
At this rate, EA will be a sole publisher of almost all the decent MP shooters out there. Hopefully they won't screw this up and revert back to the old evil ways of doing things or I am gonna run out of publisher not to hate.

  • Former IW heads join EA.
  • Next title in Medal of Honor series delayed until Q3 `11.
  • Next title in Medal of Honor series renamed to "Medal of Honor Modern Conflict 3" ("'3' has a meaning in the story and is in no way meant to rip off competitors").
  • EA announces there will be no dedicated servers for MC3, citing new and exciting EANET, made from the ground up for little latency and stopping cheaters ("I've been playing mainly with around 100ms ping and it was great").
  • Modern Conflict 3 sells 120312030123 gazillion bazillion trillion copies.

Well they didn't really stop, they just became less evil in my eyes recently Smile
They didn't completely ruin the major developer houses they acquired like DICE and BioWare for example.
Published a few new IPs (with some more to come) instead of doing what they always do.
All in all they just don't look as bad when you compare them to Activision or more recently Ubisoft, at least when you look at the PC games market.

In any case I am curious what the new IW will come up with and how they will handle the PC releases. Considering that now they are supposedly more or less independent, it should be at least more obvious who to blame for the IWnet Smile

They've always done that. Buy new studios, close old ones. Publish Dragon Age & Bad Company 2, but at same time screw Red Alert and cancel all sports games on pc. They've been doing this since forever.

I can perfectly understand that you guys aren't much into sports games, but not porting the "nextgen" version of Fifa to the PC has been one of the biggest mistakes of recent EA's history, strictly imo.

they should only bring out a new fifa or whatever ( new engine on both consoles and PC ) every 3 years, and have a DLC once a year with the new season roster. thats one logical use i can see for DLC, where both the users and devs only benefit from it.

Next-gen fifas suck ass anyway, fifa 2006 was the best IMO

real men know Fifa 99 will always be the best

fifa series up to fifa 2002 was awesome , it kinda went downhill after that , haven't played a fifa game in years , every now and then i download a demo only to be dissapointed how bad it is

Its not only about FIFA. NHL 09/10 are great and canceling pc version made many players mad, MADDEN had great modding comunity at the time they made it restricted to consoles. Same with Tiger Woods, people are still making some really good courses in editor, but apparently that was against EAs plan and they screwed whole comunity. I see reasons in all those moves, because they saw modding too strong factor in their yearly plan for sports games, it would also made their 'buy cheats and important game elements' as DLC, invalid.

But, sure if you only care about shooters, just go on and keep buying their games and pretend that they are all nice guys with good intentions.

Call me cynical but no publishers are nice guys with good intentions.

It's become big business and they're all in it for the money.

Only motive to buying a game for me is do I want to play online. Politics are an unnecessary distraction.

The big story today is of course former Infinity Ward co-founders Jason West and Vince Zampella creating a new studio called Respawn Entertainment under EA's wing. EA's Frank Gibeau stated they won't be working on the Battlefield or Medal of Honor franchises and plan on coming up with a new intellectual property.

Quote:
The game will be published by EA. That much is known from this morning's announcement that Respawn has an exclusive publishing deal with Activision rival EA, a company for which West and Zampella used to make Medal of Honor games before leaving to create Call of Duty. The EA Partners deal allows Respawn to own the games — intellectual property, or IP — that it creates.

Good news there, its a "EA Partners" deal. That means, the IP is owned by Respawn Studios and not EA and also it gives them close to unlimited freedom. I guess its the same what Bioware has.
