well i got money left and i am looking for a mp3 player with 20 gig

well i like the designe and the menues of the ipod but i dislike using itunes for filetransfer making me not able to use it as a portable hd which is important for me.

i had a look at the iriver h320 which is not so nicely looking and with bad controls. test say it sounds better than the ipod, better headphones included, excellent color display, usb to go meaning i can plug any compatible usb thing (read camera, usb sticks) in it and browse and copy files, videoplayback after firmware update. plus it is used in xp and osx as a harddrive. and it is cheaper....

so any other good players i should put into cosideration. i want to spend around 300 bucks...

Sony Network Walkman NW-HD1

or

Zen Touch from Creative...

large battery life on both of 'em and very nice design...

i believe you can enable disc use on the ipod and use it as a hard drive.
it's in the ipod preferences in itunes.
I think you still have to transfer music through itunes but it shows up in my computer also.

When in the iPod Settings window, you'll notice the option to "Enable Disk Use." When checked, this allows the iPod to show up in the Finder (Mac) or Windows Explorer (Windows) as a standard removable hard drive. (In Manual Sync mode, Disk Use is always enabled).

When the iPod is displayed as a hard drive, you are free to use it for whatever you'd like to do: Backups, file transfer, etc.

You won't, however, be able to access the music directory easily (enable "Show Hidden Files"). If you do manage to find the music files, it is best not to tamper with them directly, as you may corrupt the database, requiring you to restore the iPod entirely.

It is important to note that when disk use is enabled, you must manually unmount the iPod before you unplug it. To do so, select the iPod in the source column, and click the eject button in the bottom right of the main iTunes window.

Zen Touch.. *nods*

I wouldnt go for the Sony stuff just because they always come out with there own little "takes" on technology.. Memory stick.. Dont they also use some sort of music encoding also? I was sure they did?

I just bought a Zen Xtra (they where cheap and do the job perfectly), its just a builkier less feature filled Zen touch and I find it amazing! They do come with an "itunes" like application, but you dont have to use it, and it can be used as a portable HDD.

::EDIT::

My battery hits 2 bars (out of 3).. sometimes 1 bar after an ENTIRE day's listening at work. I charge it as I sleep and I never worry about it running out on me while walking too and from work or around the building Smile!

i checked the link and you still need itunes on any mac or pc to use it as a hd which limits the usability. since i mainly need this feature to transfer data to the pcs in the uni which do not have itunes installed nor am i allowed to install it.

iPod photo 60, you can use other transfer programs to transfer songs and yes you can use your iPod as an external HDD and run programs of it.

iriver H320 is a great player

iAudio m3 is cool if you dont mind that you have to browse files after folder structure only

iriver H10 is quite cool as well

go to head-fi.org to the portable audio section in the forums.

Sorry for flogging the dead horse (wow I feel english today) but there are also plugins for various music players that do the Itunes job for you.. Winamp for example.

Just want to give all the info there is Smile!
