No clue. Mine starts up just fine.

But what's the BIE release anyway? Sounds shoddy. Not to mention the patches may only be compatible with Skidrow's.

He meant the Windows release, tho I doubt that has anything to do with his issues.

Really great game, though like most 4x the AI could need some work.

I had the same error, for me it was that I hadn't installed the POS shit Windows Mediaplayer. Downloading and installing WMP11 made me able to play the game.

Another thing I had problems with was my economy tanking while just playing along and trying to colonize everything I could get my greedy little paws on. Apparently the budget screen doesn't paint the whole picture. I don't know if it just takes a while to kick in or something, but you get a pretty punishing penalty to your tax income if you don't have like 10 different kinds of luxury resources. This can easily put you in the red, especially in the beginning when you rely pretty heavily on your developed homeworld(s) to pay upkeep and construction. To add to this, the AI don't prioritize luxuries enough if you just let it do its thing. So, exploration (lots of explorers) and manually building mining stations over luxuries through the expansion menu thingy is pretty key if you also want to send colonizers manually to out-expand your opponents.

1.04 out!
Quote:
3. Manually controlled ships will now automatically refuel when low on fuel, and then return to their previous mission
4. Manually controlled ships will now automatically repair when damaged, and then return to their previous mission.
5. Manually controlled ships will now automatically engage enemy targets without needing to be manually directed to each target. They will then return to their previous mission, e.g. patrol, escort, etc

^^ love this

Indeed, and just in time I have completed migration from Vista to Win 7 by doing clean install. Reinstalled DW just a couple of days ago and had no time to play.

Is it any smoother when zooming in and out? Overall it ran really well but that zooming was brutal.

Zooming is my biggest complaint right now. That's a good thing, honestly, but it does kill some of the fun.

Cool, thanks, although I'm putting off installing this game, the battle looks kinda dull.

Also, I'm gonna need some serious time to learn this, hehe.

Battles aren't really that impressive, true, but I think they're decent enough. You still have that 'fun to make a powerful ship and watch it rape everything in a fight' factor, which is one of the great things about 4x games. The biggest problem for me about the battles was really how the ships would sometimes behave somewhat strangely. That got better with the latest patch though. Looks like fighters are in with the expansion, which might be interesting.

From what I've tested it's pretty good but those two races (AI and that insect one.) are pretty difficult to deal with, game tends to lag a bit as well in the larger galaxies once you get into expanding and building up your fleet, nice with all these encounters and mini stories as well and the tech tree and ship management is intuitive though it's also highly automated by default but that does make things easy to get into though difficult to master, nice selection of races as well though some are pretty similar outside of minor bonuses, certain government styles like Way of the Ancients are also quite powerful though have to be found via ruin exploration and system colonization and such.

Interesting visuals as well, reminds me of flash or older era space combat games but it is very well done.
