An Australian Zoo Weekly editor claims to have been fired from his position for blowing the whistle on Rockstar's attempts to influence his Red Dead Redemption review:

A magazine editor who claims he was sacked for posting part of an internal email on Facebook says he was blowing the whistle on video game companies pressuring publications for favourable coverage. Former Zoo Weekly deputy entertainment editor Toby McCasker last month posted on Facebook part of an email that seemed to show a game maker demanding a positive spin on its latest title.

The email was allegedly sent by a publicist for Rockstar Games to staff at the magazine, concerning coverage of the company's new title Red Dead Redemption.

"This is the biggest game we've done since GTA IV, and is already receiving Game of the Year 2010 nominations from specialists all around the world," it read. "Can you please ensure Toby's article reflects this — he needs to respect the huge achievement he's writing about here."

McCasker told news.com.au the email was an example of growing pressure from game companies for favourable media coverage.

"I did not sign up to become a journalist to write advertorials masquerading as editorial," he said. "This 'cash for comment' culture that is fast becoming the status quo within print media bothers me a lot."

Make a fantastic game, it gets good reviews.

Make a pile of shite and pay to get good reviews.

This is disgusting, but unfortunately a growing trend. The only real way to see if games are worth a purchase is to try them on your own *in any means necessary*. Let the sheep trust reviews blindly and quote them when arguing a game is good without actually having an opinion of their own.

hmm even with my little knowledge of games these days, it was pretty obvious that was the trend for some years already
remember "Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures" or "Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning"?

Yes. The difference here is that someone blew the whistle and got fired for it. I guess the editors and journalists should send their stuff to wikileaks and similar instead.

If it is as good as what they say who cares really?
Wouldn't anyone or any company do this to strengthen there sales?
If a demo is released we will all find out how good it is but it does look good Smile.

Everyone should have a standard mag or site. After reading a magazine for years you get to know their opinions and the value of that opinion. It's not that hard to find a good review. PR battles will always be fought, it's a multimillion dollar bussiness.

LOL, Zoo weekly, who gives a fuck, their reviews mean nothing anyway. Positive pressure towards favourable coverage is nothing new, and certainly nothing to be 'disgusted' by. Sometimes I wonder just how ignorant people are of standard business practices. Glad the stupid twat got fired, there is such a thing as professional discretion, and he should know not to publicise internal emails.

Meta-review consolidation sites are still highly reliable for giving you an idea of a products quality.

It only comes from insignificants like "Zoo weakly" because they are amateur enough to not be legally protected against whistle blowers. Even Gerstmann who got fired over a similar issue still insists it was just a misunderstanding.

You know what's a pity? I'm sure that the guys at rockstar really give their best to create a nice game! But those cocksuckers in the marketing section just try to justify their own position and thus do such fucking crap! Sad

QF motherfucking T.

Anyway, since when does anyone here care about reviews from sites.. its much more realistic to read reviews from forum users you read/talk to regularly like the console section.. I mean come on, for a quick example it was TwoBells who put us all on to Demons Souls well before any of the 'big' gaming sites reviewed it..

that's kinda my first thought.
I can't (won't) believe that a Rockstar Game would need this kind of forced good press O.o
anybody read some of his older reviews? Maybe he's a dork who doesn't know shit Very Happy

+1 to what Cohen said.
I tend to rather believe people who don't get paid for writing reviews.

couldn't disagree with you more. Journalistic integrity is vital to counter balance corporate interference, and political bias. It may just be a shit video game review, but there's an important principle here.

Look at people like Rupert Murdoch, constantly bombarding politicians and national organisation with veiled threats, phone taps and cold cash. This sort of thing has to be resisted.

Honestly it's in corporate publishers interests to keep us as culturally controlled and politically ambivalent and sterile as much as possible.

This is the equivalent of pissing up a back wall, a minor civil issue but unpleasant non the less.

I would like to make it clear that at no time has Rockstar EVER sought a preferential review in return for advertising.

....

Toby McCasker was sacked for a number of reasons, one of which was his decision to post a private email on his Facebook page.

Duh, if there WAS no e-mail from Rockstar, then how could he be sacked for publishing a private e-mail that DIDN'T EXIST!!!??? Razz
