anyone have any suggestions for a good 7.1 system that'll work nicely with my creative x-fi card? i was using the s750 previously, but it went bung (lasted quite a while actually) and having a bit of a read-up apparently the build quality is a little iffy on them, so im not sure if i want to go with creative again.

so yeah

7.1 speaker/sub setup, preferably with a wireless remote, that'll work well with my creative x-fi soundcard. any suggestions? im stuck on 4.1 at the moment, which is just fucking criminal.

logitech doesnt have any 7.1 I think, so....i think your set is still the daddy of 7.1 PC speakers.

Why are you so set on 7.1?

Anyway, define "work well with my x-fi". How would it not work well?
And if you're really so adamant on quality, you won't go for a set of PC speakers anyway. X-Fi's are amazing, and I love mine, but nothing beats a proper set with amplifier and everything. Don't know which X-Fi you have, but ideally you'd use the optical-out to transmit the untouched signal to that. My HTPC setup does the same thing, but even that is not the absolute top.

I'm sure Leo knows this better than I do, I always mix up the different signals Razz

*THREAD STEAL*

What speakers should I buy?

Been looking at the 2.1 Altec's and the Logitech 5.1's.. don't care what I get so long as they're the best.. Don't care if I need a new SC (got an X-FI, was looking at the asus stuff).. Please bare in mind that my current audio setup is a pair of Sennheiser HD595's.. I like quality audio.

I'd definitely suggest getting an X-Fi Titanium (or up); according to most audiophiles, it's still better than ASUS' Xonar, and you'd have to dive into 200 buck cards to do better.

That, or if you have S/PDIF out on your motherboard: get a proper surround system with one or more optical inputs (S/PDIF on motherboards is optical rather than coaxial 99% of the time) and set your PC up to transmit all audio to that receiver over LPCM Smile

A true audiophile will always go for the latter, but truth be told: X-Fi's are pretty goddamn amazing. The chips on it are better than those used in most mid-range audio systems, and I think you´ll be plenty happy getting that and just a good set of speakers without a fullblown receiver behind them. You´d have to dig pretty deep into your wallet to find a receiver that is capable of doing this really well; deeper than an X-Fi with speakers me thinks.

Idd, more after the speakers for chilling with a movie/TV on or playing games. For music (and some movies) its always going to be the headphones Wink!

@ sYn: Then definitely get an X-Fi (I know it sounds like bullshit, but it actually does improve your game's sounds quite a bit), and just get a good set of speakers.

If you've got a front-panel input just use the rear inputs for the speakers, and front for the headphones; the Creative software can switch between profiles when you plug headphones in, with muting the speakers and shit so Smile

I would recommend some speakers, but it all depends on what you want. Personally, I find some of the newer ranges from some companies (BOSE for example) to be a lot worse than their old products, which were awesome.

I went to the shop today to see if they had any speakers.. came back with a 5.1 home cinema system.. Neutral

Realised that the X-FI doesn't have optical out and ended up putting it in my living room Razz! Oh well..

I got the first card released long long long ago prior to all this Titanium rubbish Wink.. The only one with optical out at that point was the Fatality. Still, I decided that if I was going to spend £300 I might as well just get a better set of headphones as around 80% of the time I'll be using those anyway..

Then as I realised I already had a decent set.. I went massively off track and am now planning on buying a IPad with the money lol Razz

haha, if it makes you feel better I came to a compromise eventually.. (you may be able to tell, I'm fairly bad at getting an idea and sticking too it).

Grabbed myself a set of "Altec Lansing MX6021 Expressionist Ultra 2.1"..

I've heard great things about the quality of the speakers and as I'll only be using them for the odd TV show/Movie/Game on the weekends it seemed like a good middle ground between full blown 5.1's for twice the price and only using my headphones.

I do still plan on buying an iPad when they come out Wink.. ONLY so I can use it as a colour e-reader (for comics).

There is one at the moment that seems to work ok (on the iphone), got updated a few days ago for ipad use.. although from what I could see there was no way of uploading files yet (as the author didn't actually have an ipad to make it work!).. Hopefully it will get sorted. If not I wont be buying one.

Tbh, it will probably get cracked soon enough, once it does, again, I'll buy one Razz..

Wooo! They came today (despite not telling me they where sending them, meaning I was at work, and had to go pick them up..).. They're EPIC. Glad I paid more for the better 2.1's rather than getting worse 5.1's.
