I'm using this program to record an internet stream into a video file. I set it up with the xvid codec, but in the options it asks me for the bitrate number.

What number should i put it?

Higher number = higher quality.

so it depends on what kind of quality you want, and what kind of quality the source is (no point putting in a high bitrate if you are watching a lego land encoded porno)

i would recommend this instead;
http://applian.com/download-videos/
it captures the video stream on the fly and saves it onto your hd in it's original format
that is, if you don't mind handling exotic formats like .flv or .mp4 or such

with xvid i would recommend encoding by quantiser rather than bitrate, as it focuses on delivering desired quality rather than sticking to a set bitrate
something like 8 would probably be good for streaming video (a bit too good even but it doesn't matter unless you're starved of disk space)
