Just so understand what I meant, I was not refering to memory usage.
DAEMON Tools v3.47 August 2004 installation pkg 493kB installed size 590kB
No addons or extra crap
DAEMON Tools Lite v4.35.5 October 2009 installation pkg 8.74MB installed size 14.29MB
Tries Calls home as soon as you launch setup
Wants to install browser toolbar
Wants to set Daemon Tools as the default search provider
Wants to change browser home page to Daemon Tools
Tries to call home again during installation
Finally tries to launch browser to call home once install is finished
And from what people write about it, it has adware. IDK cause I didnt actually let it run itsself. Who knows what it calls home about.
Alcohol %52 Free Edition v2.0.0.1331 February 2010 installation pkg 9.3MB installed size 6.9MB
No toolbars, no home page crap, no adware, no muss, no fuss
Lets face it when DT went commercial they went to crap. Hey, I get it, they had to turn a profit. But I have to think about myself as well.
I ran DT a really long time. I'm glad you like DT, you should keep using it.
Cheers
It doesn't install the crapware stuff unless you don't uncheck the boxes. And you're comparing two DT versions that are 5 years apart? Cmon dude. Of course install sizes are going to change over that amount of time. My dtlite install without the lang directory is 7.45mb. A good chunk of that is MS redists. But, really, 7.45mb is not bloated by far.
Just to double check and make sure I wasn't mistaken. I just reinstalled DT Lite 4.35.5.0068. At NO time did it try to phone home during the install. On one screen I unchecked the clearly marked boxes to for installing the toolbar and search engine. On the next screen I unchecked the home page box (the only one on the screen). That's it. At no point did the installer try to access the network. The only time I think the program itself tries for network access is the monthly update check (which can be disabled) in the preferences.
Don't get me wrong. I used to use alcohol 120% (and later 52%) exclusively. But I was disappoint with the instability it used to cause on my system. daemon tools, at the time, supported more formats, worked better, and caused less problems on my system. I'm not trying to start an internet fight here. Everyone has their personal preferences. But I really have to disagree the dtools is bloated.
Also worth noting, I'm talking ONLY about dtools lite. I don't use the full version because, frankly, I've got no need for it
To be honest i have been using virtualclonedrive for several years with few problems. Its 2MB installed, and very light footprint. I'm sure u know it doesnt support clone discs like mdf, and dont think it supports blindwrite either, but since I stopped getting clones several years ago it hasnt been a big deal. I only grabbed this clone since there was no cracked and I just wanted to check it out. Normally I dont have DT or Alcohol installed.
When DT went with their 'pro' v4 there was a few things I just really didnt like. You had to bring up some kind of toolbar to access features in the program or something. I think the lite version didnt offer the right click mount or something. I cant really remember as it has been several year, and my memory is a bit fuzzy on the specifics. What I do remember is that up until that time DT had always been lite, and easy. It just 'worked' It seemed to me that at v4 all that just got complicated and bloated.
I dont want to start an 'internet' fight either as my backslash key isnt working and I cant block a punch
My philosophy about software is, use it until it doesnt work for you, then find something that does kk
