Played the demo and it's nothing like Chaos Theory (or the other old SC games), instead it goes further down the road that Double Agent (PC/X360 versions) took: shooting becomes more important - Sam has no knive anymore, the demo level is completely linear and fast paced, Sam has only one walk speed when ducked so you don't have to worry about the guards hearing you footsteps - they just don't.
The "mark and execute" mechanic is rquired to play it stealth-style. There are several spots where you can't appreoach the guards from behind to knock them out but need to use "mark and execute" to stay unnoticed by other guards.
The old SC is dead, can't say if I like the new direction yet since the demo is too short.

The lack of a knife is irrelevant, since Sam is just as capable in close quarters without it.

It doesn't matter for the gameplay, but it is a small detail that shows the game desinger's shift of focus: "Since Sam isn't supposed to sneak up to enemies anymore, why should we even put a knive in it?"
Maybe this is a character development decision. A third-person-shooter level at the game's beginning Spoiler: | where Sam is aimlessly gunning for revenge and later when he reunites with the NSA we get classic SC gameplay. | (light spoiler, only story info by Ubisoft)
This could be a cool twist.
If not and they keep it a TPS throughout the game, I'm unsure how it will end up. Even if it works as well as Resident Evil 4, which survived the transition to TPS nicely, SC will still have died somehow, just like RE5 doesn't feel like RE anymore although it's still fun in it's own way.

You took a bad time to change the platform. The old SC games were designed for gamepads, you needed to adjust your walking speed with an analog stick so the guards don't hear you (on a keyboard you had two keys to raise/lower Sam's speed which felt plain retarded IMO) and mouse aiming didn't matter since you barely used your guns anyway.
But in this game you don't have different walking speeds anymore so playing with a keyboard does not ruin the expirience and shooting becomes necessary now so mouse aming is a big plus. On a gamepad you are forced to use the "mark and execute" feature to stay unnoticed, with a mouse you might be able to kill two guards fast without it.

I agree.
Sure, I can see why people are disappointed that it's not like the other splinter cell games, but it looks like a good game still. It's not like it sucks just because it's different.
Just like resident evil 5 is totally different but a good game in it's own right.
If they switched the characters and called it something other than splinter cell I'm sure everyone would be all over it.

yeah, seems like people are way to afraid of any difference to a game series.

ROFL there is a world of difference between small changes to make the franchise fresher, and hopefully better, and completely changing the franchise so that it's not even the same genre as the previous games cover system, is this Gow3 or what.

It's still too soon to condemn the game.
I also loved the SC franchise and played every game and Double Agent twice (once on Xbox1 and once on X360 since they were different) and I think that with Chaos Theory they made the best SC game so far.
But this leads to a big problem: how can they make an old-school SC game without the press crying "it's nice but not better then Chaos Theory" or "it feels like an expension pack, if you own CT don't waste your money on this"? I think they can't and I'm glad that they try to evolve the franchise. The fact alone that Ubi delayed the game this long to redesign it prooves that they care.
Judging from the demo, I feel like they "discontinued" my way of playing SC. There are basically three ways to approach SC: try to sneak past enemies, try to stealth-kill enemies or shoot enemies. I always played it assassin-style, aneaking up to enemies and knocking them out via elbow/stabbing them. This just doesn't work anymore.
I played the demo once, tried it, failed and started shooting enemies to survive. The result at the end was disappointment, it felt like a typical PC shooter instead of the console action-adventure I was used to (especially since they droppen the analog control over sneaking speed - one of SC's signature features). Then I replayed it and this time I tried to evade enemies. This time it felt better, although I still missed the ninja-gameplay of the old games. This second playthrough mad me more optimistic that there might still be a stealth game under the hood.
I hope for the best - SC was one of my favourite franchises.

Play it on hard mode, you can't run and gun then.

I believe in previous SC you could only lean from the corner while drawing your pistol and nothing else and they never called it 'get to cover' or 'cover system' but yeah it might be nothing to worry about unless you could do it from up&down cover while spraying with a machine gun, then it's like Gow, GTA4..

I'd rather say that I'm afraid of the direction games are taking, becoming more and more of the same thing. I know this isn't anything new but diversity and individualism in AAA-gaming is dying quite quickly.
SC was awesome because it was a different experience compared to say Halo or whatever but this demo felt just like Gears of War with a silenced pistol.
In either case, I'll get it because I have no doubts that it will be an entertaining game and the coop-mode in particular has me interested. But I highly doubt I'll like it as much as I did the first or third SC.

You mean old gameplay ideas, stealth games come every leap year while 'shoot everyone' games come every year.

oh come on it's not like this is just a shooter like gears of war or anything.. it's nothing like gears of war.
yeah you have guns in both games and you can take cover, but that's pretty much where the similarities end.
I don't understand why people say every game that has any kind of cover system is the same as gears of war.
people also said mass effect is the same as gears of war...
I didn't get it then and I don't get it now. It's just wrong.

sorry I know you didn't say that.
Others in this thread did though, and it's also not just another shoot everyone game... there's the interrogation stuff, right?
you can also utilize stealth a lot, and marking targets for these automatic takedowns is also a pretty interesting mechanic that I haven't seen before.
I'm just trying to say that it's not just some generic shooter like so many people are saying.
It has some cool mechanics that definitely set it apart and from what I've seen there's still a lot of stealth involved in it all. Sure, you might kill more people on the way but that shouldn't stop you from staying unnoticed...

That's true but pure stealth games are hard to come by, if I was going nostalgic I would say things are getting faster, sexier , more commercial and slower games aren't as attractive to big companies and share holders when they can get more money from 'faster' games with less thinking to do in them and then charge 5$ for a single multi map to boot.

Depends, is he trying to avenge his daughter?
Personally it reminds me of Commando
except his daughter is alive (kidnapped).

10 days ago, but that is about the most asinine and stupid comment I have ever heard. "Gears of War", because it is FPS oriented and has a cover system. Thank god for comments like that so that the gaming-loons can be separated from the rest of the pack.
