err...put in a commando? apart from dealing the most damage, they are needed for stagger maintainance
for example, here are my most used paradigms:
com/rav/rav - for quick stagger build
com/sen/rav - for stagger build while under heavy attack from one big oder several weaker foes
com/rav/med or syn or sab - open can of asswhoop
com/sen/med or syn or sab - stagger maintainance + defense + turning the tables

Oh sorry I should have made it clear, I am in a chapter that doesn't allow me a Commando, only a ravager, sab and medic.

well, you could use a sab to boost (and iirc also stabilize) the stagger gauge, but this only works till all the possible status ailments have been slapped on. or just forget about the stagger and do "raw" rav damage

I decided to give it another go. I'm 5 hours in now and finding it somewhat enjoyable now that the combat has become slightly more interesting. Let's see how long it can hold my attention for. I don't expect that I'd be able to get through the whole game.

This is probably a stupid question, but if I have all 3 discs installed, will I still need to switch discs? Or will having disc 1 in the tray be enough?

You still have to switch disc.

Sheesh, well that's stupid. You'd think that having disc 1 would be enough as you still wouldn't be able to share the game with someone else that way. Oh well, it's not a big deal.

I was about to say "wtf, disk swapping?" then I realized the PS3 has blu-ray disks which are 25 or so GB. Easily forgotten, this is possibly the first game to use all that space fully?

I don't know how some of you are playing this game for 10+ hours without dying. I'm at 8 hours in at the start of disc 2 and I've died a load of times already.
OK, I'm a noob as far as JRPG's are concerned, I just don't play them at all usually. The only one that I actually did play to completion was FF7 and that was back in the day when it was first released and I've never played one since but still, 10+ hours without dying is impressive.

Its near impossible to die... the way they constructed it, almost every single battle can be won (although long lasting) by medic / com or medic / rav combination paradigm. Your medic just keeps healing you while you gradually knock down the enemy health until its gone. You basically just mash X and 'AUTO ATTACK ( says it all) the enemy until you win.
Or, the battles where the enemy damages quicker and more powerful attacks on cycle have paradigm weaknesses that are so blatantly easy to navigate I found little challenge. I did die once before I sold the game, against one of the eidolons and it was from lack of concentration.. But the second attempt I floored and caught it in under 2 minutes or so..
The game itself, for me at least, felt dumb'd down for whatever reason.. almost insulting when compared to previous final fantasy games. This was my main issue. The second major issue is that character development is a complete illusion, as the game caps your progress on the Crystal board. So straight off the bat, the two things that made FF series gameplay stand out from the other shit RPG's are ruined.
The story it seems was still good, and of course art and graphics great. I guess this is kind of like the Avatar of gaming. Pretty to look at, but upon closer inspection its really held together with stickle bricks and built on jacobs cream crackers

people who die little play too cautiosly :-)
it appears some people play this game with like.. always one medic in the group, and always a sentinel for slightly tougher fights and stuff like that, so they'll die very rarely. that would be way too boring for me.
I prefer to get 5 star rankings so I'm always going for a more offensive (and much more risky) approach. leads to more deaths, but also better loot, and more challenge :-)

Did you play through the game?
NO
Did you die once?
YES
So it totally perplexes me how you can say: "theres a perfect way to go through the game without dying"

If you read my post I did say "most" of the battles. The eidolon fights are the challenging ones, but they have paradigm weaknesses which are piss easy.. and as stated, I took my concentration off the screen for a few seconds to talk, and I died. Yeah I fucked up. Way to go being a generalization nazi.
Didnt go through the game eh? I played a good 26 hours so by that point was pretty certain its stupid. Theres no excuse for a game that takes 30+ hours to get good.. especially when the previous installments of the franchise where good start to end..

Well, the boss at the end of chapter 5 just killed me twice. Both times when he had the tiniest bit of HP left so all in all I've probably died 10 times up until this point 10 hours in, but moving on..I'm enjoying the experience more than I thought I would.
Who knows, I might even be able to sit through the whole game.

I'm now about at about 76 hours (vacation ftw).
completed the main story at 60 hours and have mostly been hunting missions for the last couple of hours.
63 of the 64 missions now have a 5 star rating... so does the final boss, the only one missing is mission 64, and oh god that guy is hard. lol
I killed him on my fifth try or so. Took me 18 minutes or so, but it was only enough for 4 stars. I barely made it through alive so I'll be back once I got some better equipment.
He has about 16 million HP I think, gets stronger the lower his hp are, and once every 30 seconds or something he will put up a shield that makes him invulnerable while he buffs himself and heals himself for 10% of the damage done to him or something. He's just really hard to take down.
Some of the other missions were pretty challenging too, such as the Neochu, Zirnitra and a few others, which you fight multiple times with different other creatures as support for them.
Many of the lower level ones, while easy to beat, weren't so easy to get a 5 star rating on as the target times are based on your equipment and crystarium progress.
So a low level party might have a target time of 10 minutes on some boss, and if you come back later it might be 2 minutes, and that can get really hard to beat sometimes.
Anyway.. I'm enjoying hunting the missions and building equipment and stuff, and I still have yet to beat a Long Gui... I met one before and it oneshot me with Ultima 5 seconds into the fight so that didn't go too well.
The game is really all about the combat (and the story, while it's there) so it can definitely get repetitive and it's way too restricting in the first half of the game, but I'm having fun anyway.
The combat is just so much fun for me that I keep coming back for more even if there's really nothing to do other than fight to complete missions, fight for equipment, fight for 5 star ratings, fight for money...
Could definitely use some variety, but it's enough as it is to keep me entertained at least.

Quick question regarding the FF13 ALL-STARS release, I patched DVD1/2 and ran it through AGBX and got this:

Should I be concerned?

It's allright.
Abgx360 can't detect wave 6 on it's own, that's why there is a yellow part.
But as you can see the verification said everything was fine so you can play....even without verification and only using the ppf patch fix would be enough because the release is good (except that it had SSv1 on it's own but you have SSv2 beacuse you allowed abgx to patch in the verified data).
