another great ps3 exclusive eh? |
Interesting..the average score is 8.5 from gamers who have the game and 7.5 from the press and remember that it was IGN who gave Star Ocean 4 an 8.......
The majority of hard core gamers who actually own the game gave it between 8.5 and 10.
Here is what someone wrote about the IGN review:
"In a nutshell, the review is trash. Rent this game, and develop your own opinion. Ryan Clements is an idiot. And this concludes one of my rare visits to this IGNorant site for another couple months. Good day."
I like this comment on the IGN review:
Spoiler: | I felt all the negative aspects of the review were things i cared little about which were some cosmetic such as lip syncing being off and underwhelming spell effects, and some in the gameplay such as what clements calls "a gameplay imbalance" the aspect of how the enemys range far exeeds that of your character,i can see how that would bug some people but i have played final fantasy 11 so much that it only feels second nature for that to be happening, also he seems to really not like the active time meter which again i myself am used to an atmosphere not unlike the one that the active time meter is based around so that also dosent bug me a bit either.I wouldnt go as far as calling rc's review garbage,i think he was able to convey what he didnt like about this game very intelligently, only thing is you can tell that this is a very personalized review and it shows,he dosent write the review for what he thinks the general gamer will or wont appreciate he writes it according to what he appreciates or dosent and i think its a huge mistake for people that were really wanting to play to walk away withought at the least giving this game a chance,im not saying that all will like it im just sayin i know its worth trying.

Wake up; games are subjective and JRPGs especially so. I have to say IGN are not my go-to guys when it comes to getting a good impression of a game, especially when it has already gotten good reviews from other publications, and mostly positive reactions from other gamers. Anyone trying to pass this game off as dead on arrival trash is deluding themselves or simply trying to hard.
...White Knight Chronicles is a game. Some people will like it, some people won't. If you want to argue the latter then at least present it in such a way the rest of us can appreciate and follow instead of resorting to trollish comments!

See, I've seen the gameplay vid and I think it doesn't look like it will appeal to me.... but what I do find hilarious are those people who haven't even PLAYED the game saying it's trash. Proper funny.

i'd put it this way: if you like MMORPGs (or rather, their style of gameplay), especially FFXI, and fancy a little singleplayer RPG romp before going into multiplayer, get it. if you want a good JRPG along the lines of level5's previus games, stay the hell away from it.

That's all I needed to know (I detest 99% of MMOs and that especially includes the shite FFXI)

Agreed, the game is a mile away from Level 5's previous title's in certain gameplay mechanics but so familiar in others.
I gather they actually listened to what fans of their games wanted.......silly them.
As for describing the game; imagine FFXII in a single player environment but with all the trappings of a typical jrpg but in hi def and including stunning landscapes and environs.
Level 5 have dropped their well-known and loved British and European English sub-contracted voice acting for the international version and that is shocking in that it was considered world class and guess what?...while there are sub titles there is no original Japanese language option either which I would have liked.
Don't get me wrong some of the VA is very well done but other characters especially guards and the like leave a lot to be desired but that may be due to the fact the game and game world is huge leaving the developers with a difficult decision re: their budget.
What I do find fascinating is that while some have taken the game back after an hour or so others who kept at the game started reporting a better more intuitive understanding of the game's mechanics and are enjoying it.
I am hoping that unfamiliarity rather than a broken game is the reason behind some of the negative feedback the game is getting but only time will tell.
I am just starting out and will feed more impressions back as I go.
3 rt hours into the game: The cinematics are amazing, but some combat puzzles me, for example you can highlight arms, legs, heads etc but I have yet to actually destroy an actual limb.
Oh I can kill an enemy no problem but why have the ability to highlight various areas if you cannot actually destroy that area?
Maybe I just haven't played enough yet....
Spoiler example:
Spoiler: | When I fought my first Boss I targeted his front foreleg to disable his mobility but all it did was eventually destroy him after numerous hits to that leg as well as a final stroke to the head...... |

When you highlight a limb (ie: left/right foreleg) and slash at it I found that a very good way of disabling the creature long enough to kill it.

much better comparison would be magna carta 2 on 360 (which is kinda like MMO in single player environment with questing, real time combat etc). MC2 is also far better game than white knight by a longshot. it has great visuals, good voice acting and pretty ok story for a asian rpg, and best of all combat just feel spot on.

I have Magna Carta 2 on the 360 and found it generic, critical reception to the game was muted to the say the least!
And while there are some superficial similarities the game mechanics are more reminicient of Monster Hunter/FFXII.
As for the voice acting I did the game some dis-service, perhaps it was because I wasn't used to hearing North American accents in a medieval setting that threw me but once I overcome that shock I have noticed the quality inherent therein.
Since spending some time with the game and having adjusted the on screen 'HUD' display for HD tv's (basically reducing the font size, construction thereof and location) I am far happier.
In customizing the display and learning more about the combat mechanics WKC is coming into it's own.
It does take patience however, with a steep learning curve for the first 5-10 hours tutoring yourself in the games combat mechanics; which i found at first clumsy and badly laid out.
Some will argue after spending an hour or so before it back that the combat is fundamentally flawed, I suggest that it is rather their preconceptions on how a traditional rpgs combat mechanics should work that is what is getting in the way.
But I do not dismiss their arguments out of hand but defer them until I have spent more time on the title.
There are elements of the game that need a radical rethink and my belief is that the sequel might make for the classic this game should have been.

a friend o my reviewed this and said the same... its looks like Magna Carta 2 (translated why did a system like this gets a game that looks like its a port from ps2)
the only thing here was, Magna Carta 2 felt more like Gothic , it had bugs but it was fun to the end ... but Whitey here feels like the next reincarnation of X Y Z Korean MMO with a singleplayer tutorial so short with not your typical Jrpginess it feels like you shafted your money for a town building MMO game then a Jrpg

So does this game have a complete single player story/campaign kind of deal or not? O.o
Would I feel like I got my money's worth playing through it or would I have to go online to not feel shafted?

I was so ready to get this game for the PS3, until the reviews started pouring in. Games aren't like movies, where something some critics loathed, I find awesome. Generally my tastes run similar to what most reviewers like (not all the time of course).
This talk of WKC's review scores is funny since:

Gametrailers review pretty much unsold me on this game. Hopefully WKC 2 brings it.

Same here, while I'm still somewhat intrigued this went of my "omfg you gotta buy this" list. Might pick it up if I can get it somewhere for half price or so but 65€ at amazon is just too much for a game that seems to lack in so many ways - not saying it's a bad game but it doesn't seem to live up to level5's "standard" (regarding Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy).

Guys, the reviewers judged the game against other Level 5 game MECHANICS, for example the combat isn't like other Level 5 games and were disappointed, I was disappointed too till I started actually learning the combat routines and if they had done more than skim through the title then they would have seen the treasures within.
I recommend you rent the game as the combat IS different to standard level 5 rpgs but shines on it's own merits.
You have to ask yourself why is the owner score so high..........take a moment to read some reader reviews:

or a positive review even:

Finally picked this one up. (which is insanely stupid as I haven't even finished, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain or FFXIII)
Played up until the Geonet is unlocked.
Combat isn't as cluttered/hectic as I thought it would be.
Went on my first quest all went fine until two trolls kicked my ass... hard.
Might wanna level a bit first O.o
So I think you can pretty much shape any character into any role you want?
How many of the skilltrees can you max out on a single playthrough?
