Has anyone tried this home exercise system?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P90X
http://www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/p90x.do?code=P90XDOTCOM

I'm trying to come up with a workout plan for the summer, this seems to be pretty good. I've downloaded all the DVDs and all of the print materials as PDF. All you need for this are dumbbells, door-frame pull-up bar, resistance bands, yoga mat ... seems like a good (and cheaper) alternative to joining a gym. I guess I'm worried that it is pretty intense and that I might not be able to keep up (it's 7 days a week for an hour each day, but some days are just stretching and yoga type shit).

The wife made me download the whole set. She along with her sister tried it once, and were hurting for two days. It does look very intense, but if you survive the first week it should yield very positive results.

indeed, I'm now into the overweight bmi by 20 pounds.

it can't really be a gimmick when it involves exercising every day and working out. It's just another spin on interval training... and I do already try to jog, it's not enough Wink

It's the same for me too actually, I try to exercise but it's just not enough to compensate for all the calorie intake I get. I'm just very sceptical of those workout programs to be honest, most of them seem like just another marketing scheme. Let me know how it works out for you though if you decide to take the plunge. ...how about changing your eating habits then. eating junkfood and exercising is a bit of a sisyphos thing Wink

p90x is as good as it's gonna get for a home exercise program - but since you said it's for the summer (or to at least to see any difference in a few months), i'd rather recommend hitting cardio+weights at the gym and replacing all the junkfood with turkey any tuna.

a decent gym around here is $40-60 a month .... not like I'm willing to pay that ... just maybe the money would be better spent on good food. I joined the YMCA last year, the amounts of times I went per month was a friggin joke though :/

I've skimmed through the program (heard a lot of good things about it too), and yeah it really can work, but it's murder early on even for someone in decent shape. If you're currently carrying some extra flab and haven't really worked out on a regular basis in a while, it'll take truly heroic levels of dedication to push through. So many people just try it for a few days and then drop it.

I think the P90X is actually a more advanced level of the basic program? Might wanna look into the P90 or whatever first; the full courses can all be found online too.

Hard to comment on how good it is because I have never done it but the idea of it sounds good. It looks like it does pretty everything you need. Any exercise is good, IMO. if you like it, can keep it up. I loved going to the gym tho, don't go often now. I used to do cardio for 2 hrs, then when I was in better shape I cut it down to about 30-45 mins. Worked on a few weights to get that more cut effect. I did notice a huge improvement when I started to do a few things at home in front of the TV. Situps and squats. lift some free weights. Nothing big like that program tho. Good luck to you. Post some before and after pictures Smile

yes, YMCA Wink

http://www.ymcatoronto.org/en/adults/health-fitness-rec/our-fitness-rec-ctr/metro-central/index.html

it has just as much equipment as any other gym but also has a full indoor track and a couple pools, was located about 5-10 min walk away from my old apt., and they offer a discount to couples (on a membership that's a bit cheaper already than "regular" gyms) and they don't make you sign a contract Smile

Outdoor pool in Canada! Now there's a genius at work. Not to mention, pools attached to apartment buildings are the worst in terms of maintenance/security/lifeguards. Is it used as a skating rink as well? Smug

Haha, I know. Go cycling anywhere outside of Holland and you'll end up in a coffin. Which is a real shame, since bikes are ideal for small distances up to 5km. And even if you're not Lance Armstrong, 10km is also pretty doable. Better cycling policies would solve a lot of obesity and pollution in other Western countries. And the times that bikes looked gay are long gone.

If you're climbing mountains and riding in rough terrain a bike like that makes sense. If you're using a bike to get to work/school/in a town, it's just silly.

Still looks gay. Just change the length of the seat pole, the chainset and the rear gears on the downhill bike and you're good to go. Smile

Plus the bike you posted is a hardtail.

Sounds good, although I would recommend starting now with some basic exercises every day until the summer. You often end up quitting when you push yourself too hard in the beginning, which is a shame especially if you buy all of that equipment which I figure won't be cheap. When people ask me how to get in shape and so on I usually recommend a martial art. It's fun, useful and some of them are really really intense.

If you're looking for a good workout I can without no doubt recommend Muay Thai. You'll learn how to fight, increase your stamina like hell ( muay thai is known for being a very intense martial art) and have fun. If you're more of a grappler type of guy I'd recommend BJJ ( brazilian jiu-jitsu), I train it myself and I wouldn't say that it's as intensive but some lessons can be as intensive or even more. I remember one where I could barely walk home since we had been sparring almost nonstop for 1h 15 min. I just think that getting into shape and so on is so much easier when you train something, just exercising for the sake of your health gets so boring imo.

So yeah, I think you should check around and see if you can find a martial arts center or something with either BJJ or Muay thai. I think syco should be able to fill in a lot more since he has got way more training then me. But yeah, good luck man. If you have any other questions i'd be happy to try and answer them.
