Hi folks,

The situation is as following. Some of you might know, or don't, that I am doing bio-informatics as a job. So it basically means I am analyzing loads of biological data in collaboration with biological people who have no clue about informatics or IT in general. In short, I have to travel a lot short distances to other departments, but more and more international to show them processed data, or explain them all sorts of things.

So atm i have a whopping 17" 3.3kg Dell laptop which is too fucking big to travel with and which is way so clumsy to put it in handluggage. But then again it is a 'mobile workstation' which is not so mobile at all to be honest.

So the situation is explained. I am looking for a cheap, light, small netbook. All it needs to do is go online, store some code i am making while i am on trains or planes or in a car and connect to other servers with telnet. So basically i need some pentium I inside or so...
I was thinking about the following specs
* 7-8 inch screen 1024pix
* <1kg
* max 1GB RAM
* no DVDR
* low-end CPU
* no need for biggie HDD
* high battery life
*250-350 euro price range

All right. I have been looking around on the internet, but i cannot find a decent online store shipping in Europe, preferably Belgium. And if there is a shop, there are only 10-11" models and mostly only a single model.

My question is twofold:
1) Recommend me a useful model
2) Recommend me an online store or a store in Belgium where i can go and buy at decent prices

thanxzzzz

For €250-350, you can get one of the Atom EEEs ... there are simply no better netbooks =)

Look for the "Asus EEE 1005ha" http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5122 or the "1008ha" http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/08/asus-eee-pc-1008ha-seashell-unboxed-deemed-the-slimmest-sexies/

Or if you're going to spend top dollar, the new EEE 1201n, the dual-core Atom with 2GB RAM and an 11" screen.

i use a lenovo s10e. its fast enough for my mobile needs, battery life is quite awesome, weighs like 1.5kg with the 6cell battery and it was cheap. plus its the only netbook with a keyboard that was comfortable for me to use. bought it last spring iirc. if you are gonna order a netbook online DEFINITELY go to a real store and try out the keyboards, because you dont want to get stuck with a machine thats perfect spec wise but so uncomfortable to type on you rather use your phone Smile

Bunch of people at my uni (students and professors) use those mini things (Asus EEEEEE, Acer One, etc.) they are light, small and do the job. My friend has EEE with ubuntu on it, he says his battery life is really good. The only thing that bothers me on EEEEEE is the keyboard, which is small. But other than that those mini netbooks do look practical...

My missus has the EEE 901 and she absolutely loves it. Obviously not going to be gaming on it, or doing any Photoshop/Painter work, but for what they're made for; they're great fun and have amazing battery life.

well yeah, i am not going to game on it. But this situation atm is quite ridiculous... I am travelling with this huge computer only to check emails, login on some servers to troubleshoot, show some powerpoints and do some surfing.

only thing which bottered me was battery life, but apparently this seems to be ok.

So basically every shop is selling Ases EEEE and Acer one because these appear to be popular. The local FNAC shop is selling:

Asus EeePC Seashell 1001HA 10" LED XP goes for 249 €
Acer Aspire One D250 10,1" TFT Bleu Windows 7 & Androïd batterie 3 cellules goes for 259 €

I will probably buy one of these, or maybe an 8 inch, but then again, that might look like a cellphone screen to me... I'll go and check them out this evening. And i'll take the keyboard recommendation and do some in-store typing Smile

check tones or forcom first. way better pricing than fnac and buy 2gb ram. its worth the extra euros. my asus eee was shipped with xp. microsoft forced manufacturers to ship all xp netbooks with 1gb ram in the past

Spankie, How do you like your new laptop? Bio-informatics is an interesting and heavy job, how is it working out for you on the new computer.

well, actually i only bought it to be able to login on my servers and check mails when i am travelling. So thats why i wanted the cheapest possible computers, because that are not really hardware eating applications.

Been installing stuff on it and going through some full charge/decharge cycles to have a fully working battery. Leaving tomorrow for USA for a week with the new baby laptop. I'll let you know if it is working ok Smile. Flying with Britisch airways and AA, dunno if they have the WiFi onboard?, maybe i can hump the NFOs transatlantic Very Happy
