Same game "universe" and base engine (GameBryo whatever Bethesda has done with it and what Obsidian has added since.) but separate games as far as I know, at least it's not a direct sequel,, might reference FO3 events though and probably has a few easter eggs and similar to it.

First if you didn't like the atmosphere of F3 I doubt you're gonna like the story of FNV O.o

Can't fucking wait. Had so much fun playing fallout 3. And really don't care much whether it's fallout 3 all over again. Just bring it on already so i can dive into that post apocalyptic world again.
Pick up a random guy/girl and show him/her 2 screens, one from Fallout 3 and one from F3 NV it'll say it's the same shit, Seriously at least they could make it a bit different...Not impressed at all.
I believe even if they wanted Bethesda wouldn't have let them redo the game.
Making a new engine etc. They have to work with what they're given and if it is *hides behind his desk* better than FO3 - which was no real Fallout in my opinion - I'm gonna be happy.
Which reminds me I still gotta buy FO3 GOTY edition. Yes, even though I think it wasn't a great game, it was a good game. And the franchise alone justifies buying it
Bethesda pretty much gave them the license to make a very high profile mod for fo3. Hopefully Bethesda will dump the current engine and make a new one for their next open world rpg.
Well it's very similar to how Obsidian made KotOR2, based on KotOR1 engine, supplied by Bioware.
If Obsidian had been given enough time KotOR2 would've been up there with KotOR1. As it was it was rushed, full of bugs and a lot of cut content (still great game though).
If this is actually finished properly it'll be just as good as F3 (quality wise anyway).

Seriously, what the fuck makes Obsidian so much better than Bethesda? Bethesda does great work. And no, there will never be a Fallout game like Van Buren; the time for that sort of game is passed, at least as far as the Fallout franchise goes. Get over it. The world isn't going to wait on your niche hand-and-foot.
