Fucking hell, I finally bought the damn game and I can't play it.
Apparently you need to subscribe or enter a key from a game card before you're allowed to play.
Do they really want money that much? What's wrong with letting me play for the month that comes with the retail game.
I have no money for a game card, and don't have a credit card.
I've read their billing information 5 times before buying the game, but obviously not closely enough. And when I browsed through their forums I found out I wasn't the only one who thought that buying the retail game was enough to play.
Fuck!!!!!!!
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!!!!!!!!!!!

Cause I'm a trekkie. Not the wear costumes and makeup and speak klingon kind of trekkie, but I liked the beta. I never played any other mmo so I can't judge it whether or not it's good by mmorpg standards, but I liked it and had alot of fund pretending I was Benjamin Sisco when I finaly got a defiant class ship .
So there's no way to circumvent the subscription then?
Well, I guess I better start saving for a game card.
A totaly newb mmo question: There's no expiration date on the retail key I got with the game? I mean, it will still be valid in a month, or how ever long it takes to buy the game card?
(And yes, it's probably a retarded question, and yes you can mock all you want, just as long as you answer my question)

I'm a trekkie too and I have played other MMOs.
Let me tell you. STO in it's current state sucks ass.
But if you enjoy it and are willing to pay for it, I won't hinder you.
The key doesn't expire. It's like with every serial for a game. They don't expire (at least not to my knowledge)

Thanks, now all I need is 28€ for a 2 month time card.
To bad I'm a hideous fucking c.h.u.d. so I can't sell my body.

I'm glad I read this topic. Thanks vaifan, you just saved me $25. I was going to buy STO and just play for the first month, see if I enjoy it enough to pay for a sub, but I'm not going to now - not if it requires you to buy a sub as well as the game.

You can cancel the sub right after you applied. But you still have to enter your CC etc to be able to play the included 30 days.

Lol dudes, you do not need to pay extra to play the free 30 days that come with every retail copy.
What you do need is to register a subscription payment method. I.E, they need your credit card details or paypal acc to know where to charge once the free 30 days are over.
It still sucks, i know, but you don't need to spend more than the game's retail price in order to try it for 30 days.

Looks a bit different if you do not have a lifetime sub. First they pull 1€/$1 off your paypal account without telling where it goes, its simply gone and second, they force you to do a recurring paypal subscription but not done by paypal but by cryptic them self. This means they can pull money of your account even without your further agreement. If you refuse to accept this you can not play your included 30 days. People should still be careful here.
