Looks like there's a lot of restructuring involved. Some updates here.
Quote:
It plans to expand the Call of Duty brand "with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business unit" placing a focus on "high-margin digital online content and further the brand as the leading action entertainment franchise in new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models."

Subscription based CoD in the future seems to be confirmed then.

Subscription based with micro-transactions and a cheap plastic controller that boosts the price of Modern Warfare 3 by $60.

Seems to me that IW vs Activision went sort of like this:

IW: We need 2 years to put out a good product.
Acti: Sure, we'll half-ass it with another company in the between year KACHING.
IW: And we're thinking about doing this game that's set in the future --
Acti: By the future you mean 2012 and your next installment of MW, yes?
IW: No, it's this great new idea we have, with --
Acti: Okay that's fine. You're both fired. AND we're giving Call of Duty to the guys who got dumped after Dead Space. Yes, we're so evil we feel the need to give away your game to another developer as well as sack you. Ahaha. Ahahahahahaha!

Activision. Because EA aren't evil enough.

Activision’s just announced upstart Sledgehammer will develop a new Call of Duty title for release in 2011.

The firm’s also announced the layoffs of Vince Zampella and Jason West as co-heads of Infinity Ward, with the studio’s CTO, Steve Pierce and head of production, Steve Ackrich in charge until further notice.

“2010 will be another important year for the Call of Duty franchise,” said Acti CEO, Mike Griffith. In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players.”

The company’s also announced a new business unit for the franchise that will be headed up by its current boss of the firm’s Asia offices Philip Earl.

This puts to rest speculation on what’s been going on today, from the intital rumour to the most recent report of a meeting between IW and Acti boss Bobby Kotick.

It also confirms rumours dating back to January, when sources told VG247 that Sledgehammer – found by former Visceral bosses Glen Schofield and Michael Condery – would be creating Modern Warfare 3, and not Infinity Ward.

Aaaaaaand; Call of Duty MMO;

Quote:

Activision has confirmed Jason West and Vince Zampella’s departures from Infinity Ward.

Looks like the Call of Duty business unit will be led by Philip Earl, who currently runs Activision Publishing’s Asia Pacific region and previously served in senior executive positions with Procter & Gamble and Nestle.

Activision Publishing veterans Steve Pearce, chief technology officer and Steve Ackrich, head of production, will lead Infinity Ward on an interim basis.

Lastly, Activision Publishing announced that the company is in discussions with a select number of partners to bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing regions for online multiplayer games in the world.

This confirms all the stuff that was happening all day today, between the Twittering, Linkedin and Facebook updates.

Following a meeting with Kotick around noon PST, this is about what we have all expected anyway. The press release just confirms it.

Yeah, I have an unusually strong wish to see this blow up in their faces, they are getting way too greedy, stomping over everything. Although it is a business, you are supposed to be aggressive to profit. Kotick did say that he plans to make game development a serious business, this appear to be the first steps. They want to became the largest, the meanest etc etc... Umbrella in the making.

Also reading Kotick's name always bring a smile to my face knowing what it stands for in russian, makes him seem so harmless...that bastard.

Edit: haa haa,you are too late!

That's what I expect them to do too. IW was founded by former EA employees who made Moh:AA and left. Now if these guys, who revolutionized online-shooters with CoD:MW, look for a new job chances are that EA will take a closer look (like with Double Fine - Brütal Legend).

This is what happens when you buy what ever has been shoved down your throat. They raised the price of the PC version and stripped away features and people still bought it in droves. Now they realize they can get away with practically anything. If you think it was console-lized this year, wait until next. It'll be rushed and hyped to death so the kiddies will feel they have to have it in order to be cool. " All of my friends have it so i don't want to be left out." To all of those people i ask.' If all of your friends bend over and take it up the butt like a punk in prison, would you too?' Well, you did when you supported a company that is obviously taking advantage of you.
I get the feeling anonymoose was right when he said maybe they wanted to take longer with the game and were fired so they could get another game out as soon as possible and strike while the iron is hot. I know one thing for sure, if aliens ever visit and ask can humans live without oxygen, all we have to do is take them to Activision's and Ubisoft's offices and say: " Sure, look at those guys they have their heads up their ass but somehow they're still alive."

has nothing to do with capitalism

we have choice. we choose not to pay for these games. everyone else has the choice to NOT pay or play the game

problem isnt capitalism, problem is human nature. the majority of us will settle for shit as an alternative to not getting anything at all. our standards slip. thats why i always laugh at boycotts or when people say 'vote with your wallets'... that shit doesnt work, and the ONLY one who will suffer will be YOU, not the company, because there are plenty of others out there who will keep buying the product, and sending the 'wrong message' about what people 'want', because they would (all together now) RATHER HAVE SHIT THAN HAVE NOTHING AT ALL.

the problem is people.

im just thankful we have a way out. piracy Very Happy we dont give them money for shit, we can still 'enjoy' the shit (for whatever enjoyment there is to be had), and best of all? we invested NOTHING in the game, so have no problem yelling from the rooftops about how shit it is... unlike those who pay for it, many of which desperately try to defend it so as to justify the money they paid for it. ahh piracy, however did i survive the first 14 years of my life without you.

Apparently the two guys are sueing Activision for royalties and the brand name. They claim they got fired a week before royalties payment. Disgusting business ethics by Activision if it's true.

What do you have against the Jews man? If it weren't for the Jewish League of Judea, we'd all be bowing down to alien overlords after Jesus softened up the world with love for one another so there'd be zero resistance for when the aliens popped in to harvest human paste.

Fact. Mary was a virgin.
Fact. Artificial insemination on a virgin still gets her pregnant.

Thus clearly, CLEARLY, Mary was abducted by aliens and impregnated, with her human alien hybrid child tasked to ready the world for the coming fleets with the aid of his alien powers to woo the ignorant hill peoples of the eastern Roman provinces into submission.

Good thing the Jewish League of Judea saw through it all (because obviously the Romans were too lazy to do anything about it oh yeah sure, don't really see anything wrong with this man, but eh whatever I don't need this so OK) and foiled their vile plot!

Man this is genius, I should start a cult and get rich.

i dont understand why you dont understand.

gaming... its all business. obviously activision reached a point where they saw that IW was more of a hindrance than an asset, and stepped in... whats to understand?

now what I find interesting in all this, is the lawsuit. those 2 dudes claim they have an agreement to control over the franchise and the company... activision, like most major companies, wont make any major moves without talking to their army of lawyers... so somewhere along the line, activisions lawyers saw that this would be a safe deal and that they could win in court if it came to it...
