I don't think so. I haven't preordered games there yet, only books, but my bank account was charged like 2 days after they sent me the book.

is there a great story behind this game that you press the square button to progress through?

Well at first i tought of telling you that you're a stupid fucking retarded bitch. But then after all i came to the conclusion that maybe this game isn't for you. But the story is great for sure! It's based on greek mythology.

The story for the original God of War doesn't show its face until about half way through. Once you get to the old guy who is digging a grave, there's a few more set-pieces to follow that and the story begins to kick into gear properly, with you learning more about Kratos and his past. It's also around this point you start getting new weapons to play with, and can afford many more of the upgrades.
I can honestly say I wasn't excited about the third game until I played the God of War collection - and I can also say that like you I wasn't initially sold on the first few levels of the original (the beginning was somewhat lacklustre for me too) - but assuming you like the combat system keep at it, it gets better and better. You could also take a cheeky look at GoW II and III to see the improvements to graphics and refinements to gameplay. But if you do play the E3 demo, bear in mind;
Quote: | Graphically there's been HUGE changes since the demo! What you see in the demo is close to a year old. Since then, on the code side, we have added a ton of of stuff, including motion blur, godrays, reflective/refractive surfaces, and improved anti-aliasing. We've improved the lighting, improved the depth-of-field code, and fixed some problems (present in the demo) with the texture streaming to ensure hires textures are correctly streamed in at all times. We added additional features to the shader system to allow the artists to create even more impressive looking materials. to the shader code. We greatly overhauled the shadows. We also spent a lot of time optimizing the code, and the artists and designers did a fantastic job optimizing assets from their end. There's probably lots of other things I'm forgetting off the top of my head, but,in short, the demo is a pretty poor representation of the final game at this point; the final game is way better in every aspect! We badly wanted to release an updated demo that properly reflected the much improved state the game is in now, but we just ran out of time. It came down to a chouice between an updated demo and additional polish to the final game, and we went for the polish! |

haha well thanks for not calling me a retarded bitch. the combat is kind of monotonous but it's not awful. i haven't played a ps2 game in many many years so it's probably a lot like ispep said with the first level seeming pretty lackluster.
if it's got a good story i'll keep pushing through. i hated to say anything bad because i don't think i've heard anyone say 1 bad thing about these games.

You don't break their hearts, what you do is what all men do for a easy and storm free life: lie...lie like its going out of style.
It's for their own good believe me, what you do is say how much you loved the games and that you spend every moment you're not 'with' them playing GOW.
Then you get out a jiffy bag and send them to tb, he'll make sure they get a good home with someone who'll love and play them.

That's your problem there if you ask me. I never felt any affinity towards the series myself until I finally played it properly - and you could well be in the same boat. It's much more than a hack & slash or button masher as well, with some good puzzles, fantastic level design that makes the world appear genuine and a nice level of atmosphere and story to keep things moving. Like I say the original starts off rather slowly (in terms of what it has to offer) but definitely at least give it a go. Not to be evangelical or anything but I didn't view the series as much of anything until I bought it on a whim (since it was going for the cheapest I'd seen it) and played through the first quarter or so. Now though, I get it, and I love it.

Oh.
Only thing I will say there is that the demo is not the same as playing through a tightly woven single-player experience, it's just a very tiny segment of the spectacle that is God of War taken completely out of context. So I still think considering you own it, and based on my own experiences, that you give the game a chance - but you'll know better than me what games you like.

Got a promo copy of this from work today and a promo of Prison Break on 360
Haven't played GOW 1 or 2 though. So I'm going through those first.

I got sent a copy of the GOW collection and am playing my way through them at the moment in readiness for GOW3.
I'm pleased at how well the 'enhanced' versions work, I wouldn't mind paying to see other games upgraded in this manner as long as it didn't interfere with dedicated forthcoming PS3 titles.
Might make a topic on this.

i've still been plugging along on mine. the last thing i did was move some huge crossbow which blew a hole through a couple walls. that was after the medusa thing. it feels like time traveling with the ps2 "enhanced" graphics but it does seem like there could be more to it than just pressing the square button.
i was scared it was going to be like devil may cry 4. i played that on the 360 and after 4 hours of hoping there would be something else to it than hitting a combo from pressing one button repeatedly i finally gave up.
definitely hoping it gets better though and that gow2 will have more substance to it too.

ispep it's a good thing you told me what you did and i listened cause i probably would have quit playing. so far so good. the graphics are a bit neanderthal but, yanno, durrrrrrrr of course they would be. story has kept me engrossed so far and also keeps me going. it's definitely not a devil may cry. my biggest gripe is the camera. i would rather pan it around myself than have that stick make him roll in different directions.
if part 3 has an engrossing story then i'm sold. the graphics are already stellar.

I just saw an 8.5/10 review that mentioned all kinds of problems.. slowdown, camera problems, control problems in platforming sections, bad ending, lots of backtracking and even a crash. lol
kinda funny because that eurogamer review doesn't seem to have those issues....
they specifically say there's barely any backtracking and the camera is good and don't mention anything about slowdown.
the majority of reviews seem to be 90%+ so I'll assume that 8.5 review is by some noob.
just a few more days!!!
video review is up at gametrailers.com btw... didn't watch it though.. don't want to spoil myself anything.

Gametrailers says the game is only about 9 hours long. That is gay. $60 for a game so short with nothing else to offer after you beat it. Looks like a rent game for me.

jesus christ get real. Games have always been this short, its NOTHING new, as long as those 9 hours are shitting awesome who gives a fuck if its only 9 hours? 9 hours is quite long for a non-rpg.
Portal was only 3 hours long, yet that was fucking awesome and praised by almost every single player.. heavy rain was only 8 hours long but still one of the best adventure game / games ive played in years.
