It doesn't delete saves, it just creates another profile, making saves from old version incompatible, or so.

In the Cloud, that is the Steam cloud (steam servers to be exact), don't know how it handles save games in offline mode, but it is possible to play singleplayer campaigns offline

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\AliensVsPredator usually. For Vista/7 at least.

It seems the save game info is stored in the player profile. It's like a 15 digit name with a .prf (if I'm not mistaken) file extension. This also contains your multiplayer stats and shit. It's about 4k, so it's tiny. Back this up if you are smart. I had my rank reset the other day and had to roll back to a previous version, losing my save games in the process.

Options work because of the update. AvP is a Steamworks game, you need steam to make the updated version work, because there's no non-steam crack for it at the moment.
You should however at least create a separate account, if you have a steam account with legit games on it. There are tutorials on how to make both legit and cracked accounts work on steam underground forums.

Steam doesn't work without an account, so yes, you will need to create an account.

using the update crack as above, my old save games no longer work, even when i copy my previous save games over, it does not show up ingame.

Changes to the profile I guess.
Example:
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\AliensVsPredator\A lot of numbers\Some more numbers.prf
Just rename the old content to the newly created file and folder name.
EDIT: Strange it should have worked, must be some other change or something with those files then if it doesn't load?
