Just now played Napoleon, and the difference is staggering, so multiple units is not an excuse. The Total War series, and I think the King Arthur game too, use a LOD system that draws distant units as sprites instead of costly 3D models. And units get so small in this game when you zoom out (they are very small to begin with), you wouldn't even notice the transition from models to sprites anyway. There is no excuse for how it looks in 2010. There wasn't either in 2007 when then first was released. |
So dont zoom out then (all other games don't have such big zoom at all). Whats the problem?
lol. fail.

lol @ troll fail.
Game is actually more fun to play at zoomed out settings, and actually looks better because there are actually icons that can be clicked, not some tiny tiny tiny models that you have to chase with your mouse to select.

Yep, Supreme Commander defines bland. It took me a week back then to download via torrent (lol) and I was just disappointed. I will give a wide runaround the sequel.

Well...the multiplayer saved the first Supreme Commander. There's nothing like playing with 3 friends and letting the tools of destruction devastate the map.
Also it was a pretty well balanced game...there was no defense that couldn't be broken and no atack that couldn't be countered. You can't define Supreme Commander by the bland graphics, the story (the last missions we're pretty nice).
The definitive fact about SupCom was the scale. Playing on a 80 Km map and watching you're artillery projectiles fly across, you getting in position for the final assault or surprising your enemy with a experimental sneak atack were the great moments.

This is what Supcom was for me, SupCom 2 tore all that out... |
How so? For what i know, the maps didnt get smaller, the experimentals are still in the game, so is about everything else from SupCom 1. |

Wow, is this really that bad? I thought I'd download the demo and try. Sounds like a waste of time. I know DoW 2: CR is going to be fun and of course SC2. I really loved Total Annihilation back in the day, but didn't really care for the first SupCom and it sounds like this one is a dumbed down version of the original.

So they simplified and streamlined the game? What's wrong with that?
Sadly enough, the crappy console ports made the word streamlining into something everyone hates and fears.
COMPLEX is not neccessarily GOOD. Just as SIMPLE does not equal BAD.
you would not call PACMAN, or Wizard of Wor a complex game, yet almost everyone can have fun with them. Whats important is to find the delicate balance between too complex and too simple. To hit that range we call: JUST RIGHT.
So please, if you think that SupCom 2 lost something IMPORTANT compared to SupCom1, then be so kind and come up with specific examples for those of us who have not played the demo, as something being simplier - especially in the case of a game that was a little too complex to begin with - is not a bad thing in itself.

My inside fanboyism of the former tells me to hate the game for being streamlined:
Experimental units are terrible
Interceptors patrol range makes them engage only foes at the reach of hand
Upgrade system turned to a dumb research farms
No wasting of resources since there is no realistic resource cap
Buildings are made of wet paper bags
No technology levels!
ACU's aren't amphibious
The single player's story cliche gave me a headache
2nd single player mission is a FUCKING DOTA RIP OFF
Most of the projectiles are homed, bombers never miss
Airborne units use no fuel, and they can just hover
No custo... I can't even write it without crying
I remember how first supcom inspired me to start learning 3ds, blender and the scripting required to make/modify units. And they stripped it away... That's like taking away mission editor from Arma.
But despite all this, I'm sure I will play it with friends on multiplayer till my eyes bleed. It still beats the shit out of most RTS's out there.

Just tried it. Quit halfway through the first mission, after doing the abysmal tutorial.
They completely removed the fun economy, experimentals are fucking pushovers now, no teching up. This is just shitty console shit.

Why the heck are they even called Experimental units anymore, since you can mass produce them?!
Heck....they even have they're own factory now, so you can practically get them out of the assembly line, 4 at a time as fast as you get the research points.

Took a quick peek at the demo. Definitely mainstreamed, can't blame them for trying to earn some money from the console scene, since that is where the major sales are. But still a bit sad to see what was a hardcore RTS for the PC to become something else entirely.
When people talk about PC gaming, it is often referred to as a home of the RTS genre, and now even that is taking a run for the console crowd. You can still enjoy the game for what it is obviously, it's just a shame to see more and more lost to simplistic console gaming. I don't like the future brought on by that kind of backwards progress. Even though some games benefit from some simplification, I don't think this is one of them.
But that's just a very first impression, I should play more to get good feel for the game, some changes could still be for the better.
What does bug me though on a first glance are those oversimplified unit models that seem to be all the rage now in RTS games. Also sense of scale is a bit off. Instead of ACU looking giant and units normal sized, it looks like ACU is normal, and your usual units are tiny. Didn't feel like that in the original.

Don't cancel your preorder just yet, according to pc gamer uk
Still they confirm that the big epic maps from supcom 1 are gone and you need more experimentals to reach the same kind of firepower.
Apparently the changes to the economic system is just something you just have to 'get over'

ok,tried the demo,I quite like the gameplay, I think it's because Total Annihilation was one of my favorite RTS,but the story seems quite weak,total annihilation Story was way better then this,I think this game is made mostly for MP,but I don't know I will bother with this one,I don't think it could be on the level of Total Annihilation in terms of sound also{one of the best game OST's ever made}
I might buy it for MP but I think I will wait till expansion pack will be out,Starcraft 2 if far more important game for me then this.even it's beta

The game is not bad actually. It's just different, which might be enough for those who enjoyed the original SupCom for its more hardcore features and gameplay options.
Most of the changes seem to be geared towards making the game a little more fast paced.

Yes it is dumbed down, and that's how it's different. Because being different is completely different from being not different.
