I played the demo and I must say it was fun! That guy beat me up during the first play through because I hit the square instead of the X which allowed him to repeatedly karate chop my neck until I went down. But the 2nd time I was able to beat him up and I felt exhilarated! It was an awesome Hollywood moment. It was really like watching a movie and controlling it. This reminds me of Dragon's Lair! Which isn't a bad thing. But you have to press the buttons and move the stick quickly/accurately and then they throw in the press-and-hold buttons which threw me off at first.
I had a tough time climbing up that hill in the crime scene! LOL! I was trying to position my fingers right and I was getting all knotted up. I liked the way they did the clues.
I am not use to these types of games. I could see CSI adopting Heavy Rain's gameplay and doing a reboot of that series. I have been missing something by not playing these types of games. The graphics are fantastic with high production values and the presentation is very nice. I think the game play is varied enough where this will be a winner. I am of course most interested in the characters, story and how I can help them proceed through it.
This is a nice game and I am looking forward to getting it.

Don't forget the QTE's, particularly in the fight type sequences, are implemented in a very fluid and seamless fashion. I found I really enjoyed them, but as usual it seems to be a polarizing game so your mileage may vary.
Quote: | A french video games diary gave it 6/10 |
...and if you read their response to Sonys blacklisting it's very unprofessional calling into question their integrity and objectivity. That said, I actually think a 6 or a 7 seems fine given the somewhat broken control scheme and the marmite-ish, love it or hate it, gameplay... indeed many great games have been marred by bad or less than glowing reviews... but don't forget that the 6/10 you refer to is quickly dwarfed by all the positive reviews so its self-serving to focus on it exclusively.
But you obviously don't like the game or what it's trying to achieve and that's fair enough.

Well, there a lot of different types of controller operations in this game. When you get the square with the dial meter going clockwise that means you have to press the square before the timer runs out. You don't have to hold it. There are times where you have to hold the button but you will know this type by the pulsating square if I remember right. Also, there won't be a time meter going clockwise. I found the stick movement to be the hardest because I suck, SUCK at games like Street Fighter IV because I cannot do the stick movements right. Oh well, I started to improve as I played the demo. By a quarter into the final game I will be a pro! You also have rock the controller forward and back when you see the controller icon. I was able to get it down just by playing the demo a couple of times.

I liked Fahrenheit, can't remember if i finished it or not, but gave me good memories.
Heavy rain is a lot more QTE oriented than Fahrenheit, well , that's my feeling based on my memories.
What i think is really really bad, is that this game hasn't a great story, a lot of reviews pointed that, it's basically a bad thriller, has a reaaaaaly boring gameplay, excuse me but "press X square triangle to go past a wall" isn't what i call a great concept of gameplay, but a lot of websites are wanking over it, calling that a gem, a game that will change forever what video games were, bla bla bla...
When david cage is saying this kind of things:
"J'ai passé l'âge des monstres et des zombies". David Cage, 40 ans
google translate-> "I passed the age of monsters and zombies" = video games were bullshits for kids before, now i made it a true art, with heavy rain. bow down.
I'm a bit trolling for sure, i really don't like the hype this game has.
It must be good in some ways, sure , even worth the buy. But this hype and the self sufisance of Cage make me wanna puke, sorry.
Another world (out of this world) was a gem, as was shenmue , deus exe1 ,etc...
I don't think an interactive fmv with qte only can compare to these titles.
In fact the whole qte shit is stopping me from enjoying this one.
Maybe with another kind of interface, natal, wiimote , whatever...

the game is getting hype cuz its a ps3 exclusive
i only go by GT reviews and they showed the gameplay and i lolled
it does deserve a high score, but not as high as other sites give it. it has a lot of flaws in the gameplay dept. but the pretty gfx and the qte make it up for it(as all there really is to this game)... lawl just like a whole lot of wii games... they don't look pretty and don't sound as shiny as some 5.1 thx games out there, but game plays are top notch but they're hated upon by fans of the awesome power of ps3.
this may be a bit of a trolly statement... but me thinks this game gets so hyped up cuz of the pretty gfx which i don't think are as pretty fanboys will make any game awesome. and its true. if this game were a goty which im pretty sure already is on a lot of peoples lists... it wouldn't have a shoddy game mechanic outside of the whole experience. qte and pretty gfx don't make the game. other things add to it as well. and if it just super amazingly awesome during 80% of the game and the other 20% are jush clunky ech eww blech moments... then it's not as awesome.
it aint a game for everyone, but it sure as hell is not because of the qte and other things...

It isnt a game for everyone, I dont think that anyone will say it is.
Personally I love old school adventure games with point and click mechanics (along with the 7th guest clones) etc.. and for me its argubly (with some decent adventures coming out in recent years) about the closest I am going to get to a this generation adventure.
Adventure games tend to focus more on story and less on gameplay and if the story is pap then the game will fail, if its a great story then adventure gamers like myself with put up with the shortcomings of a control system (because damn its clunky) and enjoy the game.
Its not for everyone, and I suspect it will bomb a bit beause of the average gamers wants / needs, but for me it made me buy a PS3, its the only game i want the system for and if the full game ends up pap, then so be it, I can still play Final Fantasy without compressed movies
Also, while I would never slate anyone else's tastes in games, I do kinda agree with Cage. I really have got bored with the endless amount of FPS's and Alone in the dark knock offs etc... but to each their own. I have never been a big FPS fan anyways and Survival horrors are starting to bore me as they try and go more action orientated.

I also love point and click old school games.
Heavy rain with only one button to click , would be nice for me.
Go in front of someone, click X , dialog, go in front of a door, click X, open the door , etc...
Simple , basic.
But the QTE concept, i'm really not into it. A few is ok, like with shenmue, but a game based on that, i can't .

The only thing that bothered me with the demo was movement
Holding down R2 to move is retarded.
Other than that I found it enjoyable, and I can see myself playing through it a couple of times to see what differs (ie in the demo losing the fight or winning it)

well - the german mag c`t - one of the most respected in the industry (not known for game reviews...) gave it a "++" in all assessment criterias they have (it goes from -- to ++ so basically its a 5 point system...) they couldn`t care less if sony is amused bout there review.
I didn`t hear bout this game before (no consoles here since dc and xbox 1), but know I wish I could play this one...

heh, but I cant see the point in the demo, maybe in the game it becomes something that makes sense, but in the demo I just found it annoying.
Point taken though, but I am sure you can see my point (or maybe not)

look. To simplify this in one post:
You will either like the gameplay / game
or you wont.
if you dont, gtfo out of the thread and go find a different game to play. No one here who likes the game agrees with your opinion or gives a shit about you trolling it for its gameplay style.

Well even David Cage himself said the game was designed for a single playthrough as multiple plays "kill the magic of it"

I said "with little replay motivation"
there are forsure different endings , there are also different ways to play thing out throughout the entire game , however the plot / crime / etc remains the same , and so for me after completing I did not feel motivated to go back and play again, I expect I would some months down the line hence my point about rent and buy when much cheaper
