February 15, 2010 - Street Fighter IV… on the iPhone? Capcom is going for it this March, bringing the acclaimed fighter to Apple's handhelds. But this is no quickie, banged-out port. Capcom has taken months to come up with suitable controls for a platform with no physical buttons, employing a virtual pad and move buttons to recreate the arcade stick right on the touchscreen. After all, without great controls, what's the point?

Capcom is not accepting any loss of the console game's beloved art direction in the iPhone edition. It has taken assets straight from the current-gen code, so the new art style that won universal accolades is faithfully recreated on the iPhone's smaller, but crisp screen. In our shots of Ken and Ryu battling it out, you can see the fidelity to the console version at play. These are the same models, just slightly scaled down – but with minimal loss of detail or color.

Quote:

And it isn't just art direction that Capcom is bringing to the iPhone's Street Fighter IV. Capcom promises that fan-favorite fighters beyond Ryu and Ken (the first two Capcom is willing to confirm) will round out a large roster. While names are not yet spoken, Capcom has confirmed that the iPhone cast features both classic brawlers and new characters created for Street Fighter IV. So, there is an excellent chance your personal favorite will end up in the mix. Each fighter has their complete move set, including the Ultras. The animations for the over-the-top Ultras have not been cut either. Expect to see those screen-popping bursts of punches and kicks explode on the iPhone.

Now, hardcore gamers coming into Street Fighter IV with lofty expectations are understandably concerned about whether or not Capcom's virtual pad will offer the same, precise controls needed to truly master the game. That's fair because to competitive players, Street Fighter is a contest of exactness and finesse. To alleviate worries, Capcom offers a number of control configurations so players can find their favorite position, button transparency, and set-up. Street Fighter IV also includes a Dojo Mode for training, giving you ample opportunity to get used to the controls before heading into a tournament or into a multiplayer match.

Quote:

Multiplayer? Street Fighter IV allows two players to trade blows over Bluetooth, just like the arcade or console edition. So, spending a little time in Dojo Mode isn't such a bad idea, especially if you want to answer your iPhone and tell whoever is calling that you just hammered your friend flat into the ground.

Check out IGN's full gallery of screens, seen here for the very first time anywhere. And be sure to keep checking back as we learn more about Street Fighter IV's expansive roster, additional modes, and potential price in the weeks leading up to its App Store release.

Holy Mary Mother of God.... that looks incredible!! Ok yeah, it's "streamlined" (one punch, one kick, one throw, one special buttons) but god it looks good for a device like the poxy iPhone!!

I can't comment on that one, since I've never played a game on the iPhone/iPod Touch - so I dunno how the screen feels.

(inb4 the Applefags claim the touchscreen is better than any joypad or mouse'n'keyboard Cool Face)

touchscreen virtual keypad is not bad for beat-em-up type games ... it would probably suck for fighting games though.

Yep, because on beat-em-ups there are only so many buttons to press, and even so, you concentrate on just one button. The problem with such onscreen controls is you don't feel the button, so you have no real indication if your finger is on the correct button unless you look with your eyes, and with most games it isn't all that to have to concentrate on the buttons.

Physical buttons will always be better!

But most games feel good playing with virtual pad.

Sad to see only local MP, they already have the servers set up for console versions, was it really that hard to set a server or two aside for phone MP? ;p

No real point in creating an entirely new thread as this is, basically, just an enhanced SF4... but!

"Street Fighter IV Volt - Battle Protocol" coming in July.

Quote:

Perfection is a strong word, but Capcom isn’t shying from using it when describing Street Fighter 4: Volt, a fleshed out iPod Touch and iPhone sequel to the original Street Fighter 4 [$1.99]. Volt will feature a cast of 18 characters, and will see the addition of Wi-Fi competitive play, which was something its predecessor lacked. It’ll also, according to Capcom, offer “perfected” action with a control feature set reminiscent of the original game.

Of those 18 characters, four will be new to iPhone and iPod Touch series: Balrog, Vega, and Cody will make their debut alongside a “mystery character.” If I were a betting man, I’d bet that this mystery dude is one of the four new cast members of Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition — Yun, Yang, Evil Ryu, or Oni.

The teaser trailer revealed during E3 shows a lot of the in-game action, but it doesn’t do a great job at expressing that the touch controls can be customized, just like they can be in Street Fighter 4. Neat!

Looking good, right? No word on price, but Capcom has confirmed that launch will be soon — the game should be available on the App Store this July.

Oh and I also had the pleasure of playing SF4 on my iPod... and I gotta say; it works. Capcom kept updating the game and now it has 14 characters as opposed to the original 8. The controls are more-than-passable, feeling incredibly responsive with almost no lag whatsoever - not to mention the buttons can be moved and the gameplay tweaked from six buttons down to four, to make it easier to play on smaller screens. The visuals are pretty impressive (serious lack of AA though) and the animations are really good... sadly the game has static backgrounds and only local WiFi multiplayer. At least Volt adds internet-based WiFi battling.

The question is, will it support "retina" aka high resolution? On iPhone 4, SFIV looks quite horrible.

Yeah, I can imagine.. it looks pretty bad on the non-HR devices, so I can only imagine how much worse it must look on retina ones. I don't know if Volt will support retina or not, guess we'll find out once it comes out.
