There's this large lab environment or "bunker" next to the Duty/Freedom station (Should be easily visible on the map.), a early quest is to take three Veles detectors there so you encounter it pretty early by doing such side quests.
(Also has the only guy who can trick out the more special upgrades for the CS suit although he's pretty useful for weapon upgrades, some nice side missions there as well.)

Are you guys all using the SMRTER mod? Reading the comments on stalkerfiles doesn't bode well. Or is it nitpicking?

Damn the Atmosfear mod really makes a big difference. Graphics are much better and it doesn't even hit the fps that much. It went down by 2-3 frames.

Just finished the vanilla game. Definately the 2nd best game of the year 2010 so far. It needs some "heavy" modding though.

Atmosfear + SMRTER is possible to use both?
edit: guess so '' NOTE: It has been confirmed that mod works with S.M.R.T.E.R.
Pripyat Mod v0.41. First install S.M.R.T.E.R., delete or rename
'gamedata/textures/sky' folder and then install AtmosFear. ''

There are tons things kept me going after i got to that stage, all the scientist missions and finding oasis and artifact hunting off coarse and just going out to find big bad beasts to fight.

??? did i miss something. if i remember right theres like 3-5 scientist mission and thats it. oasis completed in 5 mins. artifact hunting whats the point? mutant hunting no point. tons of things`? :s after you complete the game theres little you can do.
i tryed the smrtr mod but i dont like it very much, nocturnal mutants roaming in daylight, You can carry like million items in smrtr and you get more artifacts more money more everything.. i dont like it. imo vanilla is better atm.

Lolwut. You start with less and worse equipment in SMRTR. Carry limit is only upped by 30, which is a good change imo. Less running back and forth just to drop off/sell shit. Anomalies are also much more dangerous, making it harder to get artifacts.

What kind of performance are you guys getting?
Just not sure where to leave my settings, the game defaulted for me to medium, static lighting. and 1024x768 resolution.
I changed it to high, dynamic lighting and 1400x900(native). Haven't touched the advanced settings yet...
I have core i5 750, GTX 260 and 4GB ram on Win 7 64bit.
Cheers

Defaulted to DX10 Enhanced Dyn Lighting, 1280x1024, Maximum everything else. The "view distance" slider was at 75%, so I cranked that up to full. I get 30fps minimum inside the main hub, everywhere else it's 50-75.
Core2 E7200 @ 3.6Ghz, 4GB DDR2, 4870-1G, Win7-x64.
This is definitely the best optimised of the series.

I don't know much about system specs = to game settings.
Any advice for what I should use?
How can you check whether or not it's running in DX10 or 9?

Thanks for the tips. And yeah it's stock speeds, don't know much about overclocking, but I'll look into it for sure!
Mine was running in DX9 apparently, I'll mess around some more with the settings.
How do you check your FPS? with FRAPS?

Well, I installed SMRTER, ad Atmosfear. And followed the readme's instructions. Loaded it's config file and it set the lighting back to DX9, and maxed out everything else with 60Hz refresh rate ticked. Never seems to drop below 40. The card heats up lots though, I'll turn the fan up before I play. Looks fantastic, kind of blurry... that's probably the max filtering that's on. Not used to using lots of filtering lol I guess I'm scared to push my card too much lol.
Is it safe to tweak settings still, after installing atmosfear? Since it tells you to use it's cfg file?

as you probably know starting equipment means absolutely shit.... asshole. you only need the fucking shotty you get in beginning + 2 ammo to get 2 too high powered rfles rifles (pick any 2 stalkers who you come across). and what is the point to carry all the fucking guns around??? you get money from the artifacts which you have pockets full if you have this mod... geez

There's a similar counter in the previous games albeit from the PDA screen mainly, also beeps a bit when new Stalkers appear, pretty large radius as well from what I understand so you don't really see all of those on the radar so it can be a bit difficult to figure it out.
(There's only like a bit over five or so NPC's grouped in that room in your screen.)
EDIT: The two bars next to it (You probably know this though.) is how visible you are (Flashlight instead of NV's and dark or light areas.) and how loud you are (Knife being the most silent followed by silenced weapons and silencers or stuff like walking instead of running, rather obvious though Stalkers are still somewhat over-observant so stealth is a bit limited.)
