A friend of mine just got one of the new 3GS on Vodafone in the UK with 3.1.2 firmware installed. He managed to use Blackra1n to jailbreak it and all was well for a couple of days. I mentioned the 6 icon dock I use to him and after he downloaded it from Cydia and installed it, the phone had to reboot. He was then met by the 'connect to iTunes screen'. After reading up on this I found out he is not the only one with this problem and that after jailbreaking, the handset would need to be jailbroken again should it have to restart its turned off or the battery runs out!

I have 3.1 on mine and have no issues whatsoever. Is it possible he can downgrade to 3.1?

Is anyone aware of this situation or is there a resolution available I dont know about? Or is someone working on it and its a case of playing the waiting game?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The firmware is not the issue, but the iboot on the phone. Newer 3Gs have an updated iboot. So even if you downgrade the firmware, you still have the new iboot which presently is not hackable.

Heres a guide to find your iboot version

Okay, now i'm having a similar issue with my friends 3.1.2 3GS. I jailbroke it with Blackra1n a few months ago, and two days ago, thhe battery ran out and the phone died. Now, when he boots the phone, all that is displayed is the Apple logo, wich is normal after you've jailbroken it with Blackra1n, if im understanding correctly? That blackra1n is tethered and needs to be ran every time the phone is restarted? But when i run blackra1n, with the USB cable plugged in, at the Apple logo screen, nothing happens. In Win7 x64, Blackra1n crashes with "has stopped working", and on XP x86, it just says "waiting for device" forever, nothing else happens.

I also tried putting it in in the mode where the phone displayed the iTuned logo + USB, same problems.

Any help guys?

Okay, some progress, now I can run Blackra1n, it detects the phone and i get the Blackra1n/Geohot screen on the phone, and the popup on the PC says "For tethered, run again", and when i run Blackra1n again, it just says "waiting for device"??

My friend has a 3.1.2 3GS and its pointless to jailbreak it. Every time the battery runs down or the phone gets switched off or even a reboot from installing a Cydia app and the phone is no longer jailbroken and anything that was installed previously is lost as it has to be restored via iTunes.

i wouldn't really call it pointless - had my 3.1.2 GS now for a month now and all i've got to do is make sure that the battery won't run out and everytime i install a cydia app that requires a reboot i have to "restore" it via blackrain. that's it. still far better than no jailbreak at all Wink

Yeah I guess but my friend was so annoyed when he lost everything he refuses to jailbreak it again. I did think that everything would be lost after the cydia app reboot.

Lost everything? My Sons had to be a tethered jailbreak, we loaded almost 100 apps, and never has he lost anything when his battery dies, just hook it up, blackrain it, and its back as if nothing changed.

3.1.2 3GS also can still be a non tethered jailbreak, as long as its was manufactured before Oct 2009 you have the old iboot. My wifes 3.1.2 3GS jailbroke fine, without requiring a tether when rebooted.
