AHAHAHAHA!! Oh man, that was absolutely AWESOME! I was rushing down one of the roads on my Freeway (I heart Cruisers!) and rather than taking loads of different roads and streets, I decided to cut over this grass embankment in order to save time.

Well, as I was bombing over this grass I saw a guy sat on a park bench, eating a burger and reading a paper, my bike clipped one of the grass verges and launched into the air. I landed right in front of the guy and I swear to god, he went "ARGHHHH!!!" threw his paper and burger in the air and fell over the back of the bench!!!

God, I was pissing myself laughing Very Happy

Haha, yeah, the Ai is interesting and the animations are the best ever. My favourite passtime was to harass specific ppl, especially fat ladies, chasing them, pushing them around lol !

I enjoy doing donuts at intersections and seeing how many people I can get crowding round cheering Very Happy

Or driving round slowly honking at chicks till they abuse me. Hehe.

The AI is what makes this game. Not particularly realistic, by any means, but full of personality.

So, what hardware runs the game on maximum settings? When I tried to play it soon after release, my system couldn't handle it well even on medium. I'm about to upgrade, so I was wondering...

i7 6700k @ 4.4 GHZ, 2060s, 16 GB RAM, SSD, Windows 10x64.

I get about 30 FPS with everything at max, would recommend a i7 at around 3 Ghz or so (Quad with two threads for core 'hyper threading' as they call it.) along with at least 2GB of GPU RAM (Yes you read right.) and 4 GB system RAM.

Using command-line parameters you can force the GPU ram into the system ram (maxmem) but this can cause issues depending on the RAM amount and speed of it, I use it mainly to improve visual quality though.

(ENB will also help visuals but expect a 30 - 60 % frame rate drop if you push the settings.)

i7 @ 3.8ghz + a GTX 295 hovers at 60FPS. If you have a shit machine, you get shit performance. If you have an excellent machine, you get to play it nicely maxed out.

Sabin can chime in and 'epeen' all he likes, that's how it works regardless. We're running PC's here not 5 year old technology holding everything back.

Do not buy an i7, unless you like to waste money. i5 can be clocked to 3.2 GHz easily with stock cooler. and 4 GHz+, with a better fan cooler, like Noctua NH-D14 or similar.

If your main thing is gaming, then go i5. If you work alot with heavy programs, like Video editing, effects blablalba then go i7, even though i5 works like a charm to.

Hyper threading can actually decrease performance in some games.

Yeah I might have over-done it a bit, i5 should work if you can clock it up a bit and as you say it'll save a bit of cash in the process. Smile
(Funny stuff that, to use a somewhat bad example take the highest-end i7 980 or what it was called for a full 1000$ or a i7 920 for like 300 or whatever and the only difference is the clock speed which can be fixed fairly easily due to how well they clock, just get a good fan cooling or whatever you use, heh.)

EDIT: Screens. (I don't use a i7 or anything by the way, older x38 setup with Intel 6000 serie CPU, not bad though, aged pretty well.)

(ENB being used with the last image.)

Yup, the i5 is as price-worthy as the 8800GT was.

On a side note to anyone thinking of upgrading (Way Off Topic)

I know what you mean though I don't really pay attention to it while playing but the various objects (All those antennas, bridges and pillars and such.) do get very aliased though unfortunately SSAA is only possible via ENB (Possibly SSAA might work on ATI 5000 series of cards by renaming the game EXE but that causes other problems since it has to be launched via launcher alternatively loader or you get protection related issues.)

And with ENB it scales the resolution of the entire "scene" so HUD data gets pretty stretched even with the various game menus and cell phone options so I don't use it, plus the rather severe performance hit.
(SSAA 2x = 1680x1050 x 2 and then scaled down again so something like above 3000 x 2000 pixels.)

EDIT: It does help with the aliasing though as seen with this preview.
http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,702785/GTA-4-with-realistic-graphics-mod-the-better-way-Update-More-shots-and-HD-video/Practice/
(Unfortunately it's pretty badly configured so it's not a good comparison.)

EDIT: The ENB screens also shows of the effect a bit albeit quite a few changes to lighting and other systems as well.

http://enbdev.com/ss_gta4_01_en.htm

EDIT: And a different SSAA example with Crysis using something like 8x at 2560x1200 or what the resolution was again.
http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,695146/Crazy-Crysis-screenshot-25600-x-16000-pixels/News/
(As said it's pretty effective but a somewhat crude way to do it and very demanding in terms of GPU power.)

If true, it's a major kick in the balls...

Edit : Btw, JBeckman what do you say about AMD Phenom 2 X4 925 ? How is it in comparison to i5/i7 in this game?

Ya GTA4 PC was awesome. Yeah it was buggy at launch but after the patches it worked fine. TY R* for still supporting your PC community, even if it was a timed release. Nothing worse than getting totally thrown under the bus like Remedy.

*laughs* I know you (and many of us actually) are pissed at Remedy for ignoring the PC, but come on? R* support the PC community? Not likely, mate. They pissed on the PC community right from the very start.

Timed exclusive.
Ridiculous system requirements and/or lousy optimisation.
Buggy as all hell.
Constant blocking of the modding community.

Yeah the game itself is great, but requiring five patches before it's actually playable on the majority of PCs? That's just poor.

Sorry, but I gotta go with Leo on this one; Laughing Laughing

Hint: GTAIV is seriously CPU hungry, not GPU. Also the reason why it's using so much of your card's RAM is the textures (although I agree; they don't look anywhere near good enough to need a 2GB card to run properly)

My man, you will not be running this crap even with a 12 core CPU. Just accept the awful framerate and enjoy it for what it is, or do what I did, and shift-delete. Wink

Also, about the huge video memory required, it is all due to the method the game manages textures (in a word, "retarded").

An i7 (or, at the minimum, an i5) running seriously OCed. Even that most likely won't get you 60fps at max settings.
