I'm a fairly long time lurker on these forums and seeing all the uproar regarding the PC beta has made me want to point out a few things.
When the PC beta was announced, on the official battlefield blog, the following was posted:
"The Beta is happening for many reasons, like testing the infrastructure, hosting stability, and gameplay tuning (FOV, Weapon Balance, etc...) that no amount of internal testing could provide better than real world exposure. This means there will also be times of choppiness, lag, disconnects, CTDs or other issues a Beta version of any MP game would have."
Also:
"Advanced warning: there will be things updated in the final game, like a Server browser with more functions, optimizations, performance tweaks, and learning's from the Beta."
Also it was recently announced by one of the devs on twitter that prone is gone, and will not be included despite any amount of asking for it.
This means the following things:
If prone is important to you, and is a dealbreaker as far as the game is concerned- move on. It's certainly a valid point of view, and you are entitled to your opinion. However those of us who don't care, or even prefer the game without prone, are also entitled to ours, and are not 'n00bs' and 'idiots' as many of you suggest. In any case, there's nothing to be gained for anybody by debating it any more.
If you are cancelling your order because the BETA is laggy and the hit recognition is not to your satisfaction, and it takes too many bullets to kill someone, you are missing the point of this beta. The developers themselves indicated that lag would be a problem in the beta (as it is in the betas of almost all multiplayer games). The whole point of betas is to test the netcode in the real world networking infrastructure- if there is a single thing that will be greatly improved from beta to final product, I guarantee it will be the lag and hit detection. Whether the damage per bullet will be changed remains to be seen, but certainly the developers have said they are open to balance changes (they made some after the PS3 beta) and of course there is the hardcore mode as well.
Some people are complaining about graphics in the beta- keep in mind that developers have confirmed that the high texture setting is in fact a placebo- you are not looking at the best texture setting that will be available in the retail game. You do not know what the final game will look like.
Finally, performance problems. Optimizing performance and solving hardware conflicts is another one of the main purposes of every beta test. Don't expect miracles- if you are playing on your budget computer or laptop, I'm not going to pretend the game will suddenly be playable for you. However if you are playing a computer that you feel really should be powerful enough to run the game smoothly (keep in mind the game is massively strenuous on CPUs, for good reason, and that X360 and PS3 actually have excellent CPUs in terms of raw processing power), don't be so sure that the final retail product won't run significantly better. At least hold off judgment until we see a more mature beta build, for instance after MORE THAN FOUR WORK DAYS have passed since the release of the beta.
If you are quitting because "I played the beta of __________ and it was much more polished," well, that's nice, but nobody cares. Different studios have different comfort levels about beta testing different levels of code. This is not a demo. That it would have bugs and problems is not a surprise to anyone who knows what a beta is.
If you are quitting because "DICE will not change anything substantial in retail, they only have a month" then please, direct me the secret government lab where you acquired your clairvoyance. It must be a useful skill, though I'm not sure why you use it predicting the future of game development rather than say, lottery numbers, but that's your choice. As I detailed earlier, the expressed purpose of the beta (as stated by the developers) is to solve the problems 90% of the complaints on this board are about: Lag, performance, balance. If you are leaving because there is no prone, fine, I understand that, but it doesn't make you better than the people who disagree with you.
Obviously, this is a wall of text but I hope it may cause some of you to think twice before you make rash judgments about the bad company 2 beta. |

|
 |
from http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/17526/1/
Quote: | GameStop pre-orders only to get it for first 30 days
With all of the hoopla surrounding the release of both the Battlefield Bad Company 2 demo on the Xbox 360 and the beta of the PC version, some may find it interesting that while both the demo and beta introduce the “Squad Rush” game play mode, you may not be able to play it for the first 30 days after the title is launched.
Yes, that is correct: unless you pre-order the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3 version of Battlefield Bad Company 2 from GameStop prior to its launch date in North America on March 2nd, you will have to wait 30 days to play the “Squad Rush” multiplayer mode. However, those that pre-order will get a chance to enjoy the “Squad Rush” mode for 30 days before it is released for everyone to play. Those that have “Squad Rush” access due to their pre-order status will be able to invite friends that didn’t pre-order to play the “Squad Rush” mode during the exclusive 30-day access period. And, pre-orderers from GameStop will also enjoy access to the AKS-74 assault rifle regardless of the platform they place a pre-order for.
Apparently, however, things are less confusing for those planning to buy the PC version of the game. The PC version of the game, which is also slated for arrival on March 2nd, will have no such restriction; PC players will be able to play the “Squad Rush” mode right out of the box from day one, regardless of whether they pre-order.
As for those in Europe, it would appear that the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC version of the game will have no restriction, meaning that players outside of North America will be able to play the “Squad Rush” mode from the March 5th onward.
The decision to provide these exclusives is part of an effort to encourage pre-orders of titles prior to release, and the bonuses do help. The advantage of pre-order bonuses is not lost on retailers who are demanding that publishers offer special bonuses to go with the title that are exclusive to a retailer. What makes things even more interesting is that the bonuses or incentives for a particular title may not be the same or may be different, depending on which retailer you choose to purchase from. Publishers are also using the bonuses or incentives for titles to encourage retailers to order more copies of titles that might not otherwise sell well out of the gate.
Some will suggest that the decision to offer bonuses, incentives or extras to get customers to pre-order a title or to choose the special or limited edition version of a title might look like nothing more than a cash grab. The reality does seem to be that these extras are becoming more valuable in many cases, and are starting to make those that didn’t pre-order or select the special/limited edition of a title regretful that they did not choose to do so. We don’t see this trend ending anytime soon; and we expect retailers to continue to use their leverage with publishers to get them to offer better incentives to make sure that you choose to pre-order or buy from them.

Yeah, no shit. That's what everything is geared towards these days. Get people paying up before they find out the game is terribad, broken, incomplete or all the above.

Why on earth would people pre-order to get the game mode they're already sick of?

This whoring of the game parts to rake in some monies is getting irritating.
On the upside, I'm saving a lot of money and just pirating stuff.

It's "Squad Rush" (4 squads versus eachother), not "Rush".

Did 2142 have a beta? Yes it did. Did BC1? Yes afaik. There is the answer to your question. Over time it has become much easier to utilise the resources of hundreds of thousands of eager volunteers. All software products go through Alpha, Beta stages the difference here is many companies are using potential customers to help them sort out the kinks.

I guess some of you don't understand or don't care that the number of copies Gamestop and companies similiar to it, base their orders off of how many pre-orders they receive. It's a broken system but you can hardly blame the Dev.
