I quite like Star Trek online but want something both a little more cutting edge and gothic.
Perhaps a Oblivion type mmo, but one that isn't based on grinding.
Are there any on the horizon?

Will the Starwars mmo follow KOTOR style of gameplay?

I just watched that and find it odd that Bioware have followed a WoW style when their own unique design (ME & KOTOR) was far superior...however perhaps it cannot be transposed to a mmo?

Take a look at Warhammer Online. It also has a time unlimited trail, so you can see for yourself if you like it or not.

The KOTOR system was internally turn-based and needed heavy pausing to work properly.
You can't pause an MMO and queue orders ...

They followed WOW in the look because WOW is far superior to any other MMO in the subscription account. It has 11+ million subscriptions and growing while any other MMO has bit over 1-2 million or not even reaching the million mark. They need to make this game a bit colorful to appeal to the young and well the graphics arent that superior because there is too much content and the servers would overload, and the game would be like 30GB big if it had crazy graphics too. MMOs need subscribtions to stay alive thats why the more succesful ones look colorful and cartoony in graphics. No matter what i think Star Wars The Old Republic will be succesful because, well its made by BioWare who rock and its a Star Wars game. Any geek will subscribe + WOW is losing its magic touch and I think that SW will rob some of Warcrafts subsribtions too.

If you want an AA title that's different from the generic WoW template, your only real option is Eve tbh. Big companies won't take a chance of something like an Oblivion MMO (why bother innovating when millions still play WoW, and WoW clones.)
If you're willing to play a lower budget game, you could try Darkfall, Fallen Earth (free trial out atm) or the Mortal Online Open Beta (though that's looking like a REAL push)

EVE is for super hardcore, good luck trying to enter now when people have elveld for years :O |
Well, that's pretty much why I don't play it but, unlike me, not everyone cares about not being able to compete, and could find plenty of enjoyment in the game.

Wat. The Elder Scrolls MMO has been in the works for quite a while now - Zenimax Online Studios (I think it was formed in fall 2007; completely separate studio from Bethesda) is led by Matt Firor who was also the producer for Dark Ages of Camelot.
http://www.vg247.com/2010/01/20/source-bethesdas-elder-scrolls-mmo-missed-its-2009-reveal/
If that's right, the official announcement shouldn't be too far off.

Ah, didn't know about that. Still, remains to be seen if it'll be any good - or anything like the previous Elder Scrolls games.
If this comment is anything to go by..
Quote: | While the publisher has previously denied the existence of an in-house online RPG, papers filed in the court case between Interplay and Bethesda have put an apparently secret “World of Warcraft type MMO” on the record. |
.. probably not.

Yeah, they'll have to rework quite a few aspects of the earlier games, not the least of which is the character system. And I'm pretty sure it won't be anything groundbreaking for the genre, either - but even if it turns out to be just another wow clone, it has a solid chance to become one of the better ones.

Honestly some of the emulators are the best gaming to be found atm. Pick a game you like then find its best emulated version.
I dont want to advertise for specific ones but they are out there for about every mainstream game.
What to avoid? Servers with bloated and unfair donation systems.. basicly if they are selling real items for money its a bad freeshard. (mostly find this in the WoW servers)

you should check out AOC, the games play style, graphics, gore and whole 'gritty'ness is a win for me. I played wow for a couple years, tryed lotro for a bit, then gave up on mmos' in general until AOC and it has really developed since its release in may 08, AND a huge content patch is coming tomorrow i ithink

Sorry thats bullshit, unlike WoW and the rest of fantasy MMORPG's a noob can really excel in EVE.
From the second you enter the game, you can hop into a Frig where you can be a tackler and or scouts, both roles are essential and in a few weeks you can be in a Battleship.
If you are the next great tycoon, you can within 6 months earn enough isk to buy a pretty decent PVP char skillpoint wise.
EVE does hoewever require ALOT of patience and if you dont have that, look else where.
